NFT: Teen w nonspeaking autism writes beautifully shocks parents.

manh george : 5/19/2016 5:22 pm
This is, I think, a great story. At the age of 15, he was able to let his parents know his thinking brain was whole, although other parts were not. He types one letter at a time. There were suspicions that this was like the old scam of facilitated communication, but apparently it is not.

Quote:
“My brain, which is much like yours, knows what it wants and how to make that clear,” he wrote in a letter he sent this month to a police officer. “My body, which is much like a drunken, almost six-foot toddler, resists.”

Great story, thanks for posting

My grand nephew, age 4, is autistic but I don't know to what extent. He is verbal but he shows obvious signs.
Great story but I am baffled

I suppose as many are, wtf is this autism thing? How did it come about? Is it something new or something that is historical? It seems to me that many more are afflicted, but maybe its just that technology has it more on the front burner. I am a father of three healthy men and I know many people who have had to deal with this, in fact I coached kids with the affiction. Seems to me like its a modern plague that is eating away at our kids. Sorry but I feel so frustrated by this and yet not personally affected.....
Population has grown

With it comes more cases of autism. You also have much more awareness and testing these days so with that comes more kids receiving the diagnosis. Also, the margins of the autism spectrum can blur with ADHD.

In many cases people will move to a state like jersey becsuse this state is better equipped to handle autism in its schools. So when you see autism numbers in jersey higher than in other states it can probably be attributed to this.

Autism has been around forever. It was either mis diagnosed or in some cases ignored. Simply put we have gotten better at identifying and dealing with but we have a long way to go. These kids are growing up. That's the 800 lb gorrllla in the room.

My wife is an OT that's how I know all this stuff..
Can blur with ADHD and other disorders

Not just ADHD. Autism is all about the social aspects. ADHD is not the best example to use.
Wife just said testing sites now

Take into account who started here and who moved here so pretty much throw that out too.

One theory is that parents are having kids at a later age which is causing the increase.
As djm says
JesseS : 5/19/2016 9:14 pm : link
More awareness + more actual cases. Combined it looks like a monstrous increase but it's a combination of factors, outside of even two or three, most likely.

Also, until I see this replicated with hard research, this isn't terribly different than most other similar exposed communication aides.

An Autism epidemic is going on and no one really knows what is causing it. That is the real bottom line. Improved diagnosis and awareness has of course put a spotlight on it, but make no mistake this malady or whatever it is is taking our kids in breathtaking numbers. When I hear people say its always been here we just notice it more, so move on nothing to see, I want to just scream.

The numbers are staggering and terrifying. I didn't mean for it to sound like I was saying anything to the contrary. I tend to think there are a few reasons for any supposed spike in numbers. Notably the aging parents, but who really knows. I was in no way poo pooing the statistics.

Yowsa muhajir that's quite a leap to make.

IMO our society grossly underestimates, under- diagnoses and under-treats all sorts of mental illnesses.

I never make light of any story of MI without evidence...

You are absolutely right in that it is scary, there is an MIT scientist who has projected the numbers which are increasing exponentially to where in 2032 it will be 1 out of 2 boys!!!! Are we going to wait til we approach these numbers or are we going to figure out the cause, why isn't there more of an effort in this area?????

Writing anything would have been impressive, especially for a non-verbal autistic person with his history. But those quotes from his writings are reallyyy well written. Sounds like a writer with yrs and yrs of experience, especially the style. It may be real. Just sounds like a bit of stretch. Maybe dad does a lil 'proof reading'. Or again, maybe totally from him. Would be awesome.

One cause of the

is couples waiting longer and longer to have kids -- the number of autistic kids skews heavily toward older parents. It's almost like your genes or whatever start to break down as you age, you mate, and it's reflected in your autistic child.

I realize that may sound crude, insensitive (even offensive to some), but understand -- I have an autistic son born when I was 44 and his mother was 40, so I'm "allowed." (Lest you fear -- he's a GREAT kid and we love him dearly.)

I'm really glad we have someone like Officer Reyes. I have a 13 year old son with autism, while he is verbal he is behavioral and has OCD in a big way.

As to the increase in cases, I tend to think it's mostly from higher awareness leading to more diagnoses. I'm not sure if anyone has done this research, but I wonder if the incidence of 'mental retardation' has declined as the incidence of autism has increased.

Many people think this method is horse ish. This story does sounds different but the method or technique under discussion is controversial to say the least.
Great story

And I'm sure the Washington Post would've never ran the story, if it was "bullshit"

I'm sure they did a little fact finding, in advance..
