The Fireflies got caught in a Pitcher's Duel last night. The Charleston RiverDogs started Nestor Cortes and the Lefty took a no-hitter into the 6th inning, striking out 12. Everybody K'd once and their 2-3-4 guys struck out twice each. The 'Flies Kevin Canelon matched the performance, but gave up a run and lost 1-0.

@AlbertoB_01 has allowed 14 earned runs over his last 50 appearances dating back to last season 74.1 innings-1.70 era #Mets
We

will see how Cortes does at higher levels but seems like the Yankees got a steal in the 36th round. He's been a beast since signing.

Listened to the game on the radio, the announcer said Cortes was stashed in Extended Spring down in Tampa......injury history with this kid ??? ( I checked his age, which is where I usually get in trouble with these Low-A players..HA !!)
Why is Jeff Walters on the 40 man roster?
Vanzetti : 5/20/2016 12:09 pm : link
Talk about having incriminating pictures. I know he throws hard but when has he ever been effective?

So you don't promote Riveria to keep a guy like Walters "safe"? First of all, I doubt he gets taken and if he does, I doubt he sticks on another team's 40, so even if you lose him, you will get him back shortly.

In the meantime, you keep a guy in AAA who could help you in Riveria. I'm not under any illusion that TJ is a great player, but baseball is a game of streaks and this guy is hitting the cover off the ball. Same thing can be said for Ty Kelly, who is also incredibly versatile, being able to play INF and OF. Makes no sense.

Every time I see this guy I just think of Seinfeld "Hello Newman"

Maybe to make room for Rosario? I think Romero was playing a lot of SS.

He's replacing Reynolds. Ty Kelly isn't really a SS and Cecchini is hurt.

Valid question. My guess is with Goeddel pitching so poorly they were afraid to lose the potential depth but Walters has been terrible.
Yeah, but who will backfill
pjcas18 : 5/20/2016 12:30 pm : link
him in Bing?

that's what I meant by making room for Rosario.

Who plays SS in Bing? McNeil or Evans?

Seems like a perfect opportunity to promote Rosario too.

McNeil is going to be out for quite a while (sports hernia). Gibson probably takes over as the starting SS for now. Has hit reasonably well and has SS experience (including this season).
I just saw Domingo Tapia
pjcas18 : 5/20/2016 12:39 pm : link
is on the Binghamton roster.

Whatever happened to him? TJS? Looks like he hasn't pitched in a while.

Remember that one year when he was maybe 19 or 20 and had that one unhittable pitch?

LOL.

Below is the article from FG about it

Quote:
New York Mets pitching prospect Domingo Tapia is in the midst of a breakout season for Savannah of the South Atlantic League. With nearly eight strikeouts per nine innings and a ground ball rate of 65%, his 2.65 FIP is good for second best in the league behind San Francisco Giants 2011 supplemental first round pick Kyle Crick. So whats driving his success? A mid-to-upper 90s fastball with heavy sink which rates as one of the single best pitches Ive scouted in person. But what about the rest of his arsenal? It lags significantly behind, but Tapia may be taking a rather unique approach to to starting as an attempt to maximize what the young right-hander does well.

Was once highly thought of but never found even a second pitch and his command absolutely tanked. 2013 promoted to A+, command sucked, repeated and couldn't miss any bats. 2015 TJ. Might still be something there as a reliever but as far as I can tell he won't be pitching for another few months.
Cecchini

Actually heard he was going to get activated a couple days ago. Not yet I guess.

may be wrong but I believe Cecchini has been active for a few days but hasn't played.

Gavin has been out since May 7 because of a sore back, but 51s manager Wally Backman said he expects him back later in the series against the Sky Sox.

When he returns, it will mark the first time hes played against his brother. Their parents will be in attendance, as well as friends and other family members, making the stakes a little higher for them.

Theyre going to want to have bragging rights, said their father, Glenn. If one can rob another of a hit, like if Gavin can do a Derek Jeter on Garin, hell never let him live it down.

1:36 Are you a Dom smith fan? What kind of player will he be in the bigs?

1:36 I am, think he's an above average everyday 1B.

Top prospect, and #3 overall in baseball, JP Craford is now at AAA. Good chance he will be starting come September.

I wonder who will make it to the majors first Crawford or 19 year old Ozzie Albies.
