NFT: Knicks - Free agent point guards for Hornacek's uptempo...

JimNY56 : 5/21/2016 3:50 am
offense.

Mike Conley [28] Achilles injury
Rajon Rondo [30] Defense?
Jeremy Lin [27] Played well against the Knicks
Brandon Jennings [26] Achilles injury
Tyler Johnson [24] Restricted
Matthew Dellavedova [25] Restricted
Mario Chalmers [30] Achilles injury
Anyone else?

What order would you put them in?
Who is the best fit?
Who listed can hit a jump shot fairly consistently, along with the knack to drive to the basket and dish off?
Who here has the uncanny abilities to not only see the open man but to get him the ball at the right spot and time?
Who listed has the skill set to not only run an uptempo offense, but also a slow set offense when called for?

Do you see Jeremy Lin as a good option, considering ability and cost?

Lin is the definition of an up tempo, driving to the basket, pick and roll PG.

I think it is too quick to believe that Horny will attempt to re-create his Phoenix offense here. He has been on record multiple times that he will run whatever is best for his players.
Was listening to Chris Herring on Zach Lowe's podcast
giantsfan44ab : 5/21/2016 11:46 am : link
Said the Knicks may take a flyer on Conley but would not give him anything near the max it sounded like. Also said Calderon will not be the starting PG so Grant might be the starter heading into next season.

I like Tyler Johnson a lot but he's restricted and he's not so much a PG, more like an undersized 2.
Jennings might be cheaper than people think
giantsfan44ab : 5/21/2016 11:49 am : link
But the only inspired basketball I've seen out of him was that 2 month stretch in Detroit before his Achilles injury and SVG seems to get the absolute most out of mediocre players.
It's gonna be a long rebuild here. That's why I'd see what

We have a chance to be Philly if we unload Melo, but I'd prefer a rebuild to ongoing mediocrity.

Stop with the trading Melo BS. You can't trade him because he doesn't want to be traded. What's up with moving the goalpost? This is Phil Jackson summer to bring in FAs as he stated back when he was hired. This is year 3 of his rebuild. He spent assets to acquire Grant in the draft last year to be PG of the future.

Mason, it depends upon whether he'd agree to a trade or not.
yatqb : 5/21/2016 12:51 pm : link
You're probably right, though, in that Phil knows whether he'd be willing to go elsewhere or not.

As for a 3 year rebuild, c'mon. You don't fix crap like this in 3 years, especially with no draft choices.
Giantology: Is there an echo in here?

YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! Yes!

In regard to Ishmael Smith, every time I hit preview it came up in less than a second. When I'd hit SUBMIT, BBI would just hang. After 2 or 3 minutes I would stop it and try again. As you see I tried several times. If you look at the times, they are all over the place. There is even three 4:06am's. Maybe its my computer?

I hope Phil lets Hornacek coach what system he thinks is best for his team. No luxury seat coaching. And please let the man pick his own assistants. No more spies in the locker room.

I wonder if Phil just felt personally betrayed by Fisher breaking from the triangle because he seem real upset that Fisher wanted to run the team like he thought was best for the players.
We don't need to rush into a big PG splash
adambear : 5/21/2016 1:11 pm : link
we're not going to be a contender overnight. This team is officially on KPs timeline, which means we have time. We should take shots on young dudes and hope they pan out to serviceable. I don't like this years FA core.

So close to getting Steph Curry
So close to getting Kyle Lowry
Wes Matthews on Hornacek:

"So how did Matthews mold himself into one of the NBA's most lethal and consistent long-range shooters?

"I owe everything to Jeff Hornacek," he said."

Maybe Horny can help develop the shots of Early, Grant and Wroten

what are the thoughts here? I've been getting into some serious debates with another buddy/co-worker about his fit, but I think he is exactly the kind of floor general we have been missing, and poor shooting/attitude issues aside I would be pretty excited to get him here. I know he is a dick, but from a pure basketball sense I could see it..

If hornacek plans to run the Sloan high pick and. Roll with triangle mixed in I would love rondo, if he is going to run strictly triangle no thank you

So you okay with Rondo? His antics don't bother you in the least?
What is so crazy about him?
nygiants16 : 5/21/2016 3:49 pm : link
What did he do that was so crazy this year?

What was so crazy that he did in Boston?

Carlisle and him were just not a match...

If when the Knicks sit down with him and he and hornacek do not get along or don't see the game the use way or don't have the same view on how plays should be called you do not sign him that simple...you tell him from the start this is melos and kps team and that we want you to set them up and make the game easy for them...its really that simple

Don't we have enough PGs who can't shoot? I'm guessing Rubio is the pice de rsistance.

Actually I don't even care all that much about the bad shooting because I think it can be fixed somewhat. I just want no part of Rondo whatsoever.
Rondo has
NJGiantFan84 : 5/21/2016 4:19 pm : link
Had issues everywhere he has been.

Tubby Smith benched him for six games at Kentucky for An accumulation of arguments, not listening and talking back to himself and assistant coaches.

Rondo reportedly threw a water bottle through a TV in boston after having errors pointed out by an assistant coach. In another incident after the big three were gone, he cursed out Rivers which lead to the two having to be separated before punches were thrown. A source close to Rivers listed Rivers dislike for Rondo as a reason he was willing to leave.

We know what happened in Dallas.

In Sacramento he called a homosexual ref a faggot.

An argument can certainly be made to bring him to NY and I would not be against it necessarily, but the attitude issues go much deeper than just a little tiff in Dallas. He did improve this year and Im wondering if he has matured after the embarrassment of the incident with the referee. But the concerns about his attitude and mentality are valid, IMO.
New coach
Deej : 5/21/2016 4:33 pm : link
also worked with Korver, helping Korver really elevate his game. Maybe he's really a shooting svengali. I'd test the theory by collecting a bunch of cheap 3 and D guys to develop.

If Porzingis develops into a true stud, you can go pretty far with him, a lead guard, and a bunch of perimeter defenders who space the floor on offense. I also think Grant has the making of at least an above average defender.
Unless you can bring in another max player, Rondo is just

a poor fit for this current team. As a Knicks fan, though, any temporary excitement is good excitement. How many restarts now have we gone through in our perpetual rebuild?

His numbers seem to be really good, but no one on this thread seems to think he is an option for the Knicks.

Man, I could not disagree and more. Temporary moves dont accomplish anything. Signing a Rondo because he's marginally better than Grant or Calderon, but with the conceit that you're never going to do much paying Rondo $15-25 million per year, is sheer madness.

Frankly, I'd rather overpay a RFA wing on a projection of improvement than pay Rondo. And I want no part of an aging Rondo. His game is design to go to absolute hell as he ages (he'll turn 31 during the season).
I don't really want Rondo either.
Jim in Hoboken : 5/21/2016 6:02 pm : link
But honestly there aren't really any free agents out there that I deem attractive either, among the realistic ones I mean.

I'm all for getting a bunch of picks and gambling on the likes of Malik Newman, Cat Barber....but that's a crapshoot as well.
Deej, I agree. Time to stick with a longerm plan for once.

Throwing a lot of money at a bad but available player defines the last 15 years of Knicks basketball. It is not the answer. The "get someone" mentality is just wrong. It's fundamentally not a way to build a basketball team, or any team in a cap sport.

As an aside, that's kind of what the Giants are doing. But to be fair they have to in order to make the most out of Eli's last 4 years. There is no Eli manning on the Knicks roster to justify that.
Roll with Grant this year
bigbluehoya : 5/22/2016 8:30 am : link
Let's see what Horny can teach the kid.

Knicks are not going to be contenders in 16-17, Finally have their first rounder next year, Huge glut of FA PGs next off-season.

Right now is not the time to force the issue on adding a PG.

I'd avoid rondo like the plague
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/22/2016 11:03 am : link
Forget that.
Not worried about Phil pursuing rondo.
Jon in NYC : 5/22/2016 12:35 pm : link
He's always preached locker room harmony and surely knows rondo's reputation.
Rondo is just stat chasing at this point
giantsfan44ab : 5/22/2016 1:46 pm : link
Some of it may be to inflate his numbers for a big contract. Some of it may be because he stopped giving a fuck 4 years ago and knows some nitwit is going to throw money at him no matter what. But he hasn't tried on D since the doc rivers days and he consistently hogs the ball in order to make the passes that lead to assists in the box score and not the passes needed to win games.
Forget rondonfor a second
nygiants16 : 5/22/2016 2:19 pm : link
Hiring hornacek could make the Knicks more attractive to a guy like conley , if the Knicks hired rambis or shaw and were strictly triangle I don't think Knicks have any chance at a high level point guard...

Take it past this year and could make them more attractive to the elite pgs next year

Nice player, but not worth the max deal he will likely get. Also, not likely to be interested in being a Knick unless Melo is dealt.
