What does BBI say about her? Yes? No? Funny? Overrated? Saw her for free a while ago and eh, she has never "taken it to the next level. Same old shit."...I'm in the "go away" category as of right now.

(I think the pics or GTFO goes out the window here)
First two seasons of her show were fantastic
Deej : 5/21/2016 4:34 pm : link
3rd season was a step back. Havent seen any this year. I suspect that she's spreading herself too think with the show, specials, and the movies.

Her a lot on Last Comic Standing years ago. But she hasnt really grown since then as a comic. I feel like she ambraced a role rather than expanded her abilities.

Im no comedic expert, goal is to make money I guess. But I think she is talented enough to bring her jokes to another level. Well, more like I thought that when she was on LCS.
She was funny for a while, but after Watching Whitney Cummings

the other night, I came to this conclusion.

When AS talks about sex, it makes me think of her and I want to vommit.

When WC talks about it, it makes me think of her and I want to be there.

Didn't she straight up steal a lot of the jokes for her show? I saw something like that on youtube. I know a lot of comics do stuff like that but that's pretty lame.

I think she's just okay. She can be funny but she's kind of overrated.
Oh shit...

I really like some of her earlier special. I don't watch her show religiously, but the skits I do catch I tend to like (and she has some real gems in there also).

It's also dissapointing how any discussion about her devolves into "shes fat vs no shes not" or "i'd fuck her vs i'd never fuck her". I get that her act often involves sex but still...

BlackLight : 5/21/2016 5:13 pm : link
The stuff about alleged joke thievery has more-or-less blown over, as most of the comics who supposedly had stuff lifted from them have come out in support of her. The Patrice O'Neil bit seems like an obvious smoking gun, but her explanation seemed reasonable enough to me.

Her show is somewhat different - I think somebody in her writer's room has an originality problem. Much harder to explain away.

+1. She's not horrendous - but I can't understand one thing about her or her act that caused her to get the attention she received. Even when I don't like a comedian(ne), I can usually at least see the appeal to others, in this case I'm drawing a blank.

She reminds of Bob Saget after Full House, when his entire schtick was look how dirty I am! I'm nothing like Danny Tanner!

She's crass and all, which I don't mind in general. But, I feel her jokes rest too much on how crass she is, instead of being crass while telling jokes.
I think she's funny...

It's not like I've seen everything she's done, but I liked her stand-up from a few years ago and her sketch comedy, too. And I thought "Trainwreck" was amusing enough, but like a lot of comedies it falls apart in the third act.

This x10. I don't comics being crass at all. Pryor was a master at it. But the "I'm funny because I'm crass" schtik just doesn't do it for me. I feel the same way about Artie.

people who judge female stand-ups solely on the basis of how they look (as if they were modeling clothes on-stage) sound ridiculous.

Amy Schumer isn't trading on her looks, and despite that, she probably fucks better looking guys than most of the Lotharios who insist they wouldn't fuck her with somebody else's dick.

Get the fuck outta here with that bullshit. Where did I say I was offended in my post?

I'm not offended, and this stupid "safe space offended SJW PC" collection of garbage buzzwords is so played out and cliche at this point.

The reason it's disappointing is that a large segment of her work is literally lampooning this exact mindset (e.g. the last fuckable day skit), so its somewhat ironic when people don't realize and play right into that.

Funny how everyone wants to rail against "PCs" and "SJWs", or locate "safe spaces" until someone says something that pisses them off. Criticize the police on BBI and you'll ave a collection of posters ready to jump down your throat, some of whom are quick to criticize "PC" culture and "offended" people.

I don't think there's that many great ones out there at the moment. I gave Tig Notaro a shot because she had a ton of hype, but it just wasn't clicking for me. Whitney Cummings is okay...Schumer's early standup though is better IMO. I haven't seen the latest HBO special though.

The funniest female comics on TV right now, in my opinion at least, are the girls from Broad City. I love that show (and love how it incorporates NYC heavily)

Ilana Glaser is very funny (and is great with Abbi Jacobson on Broad City).

While Garfunkel & Oates was funny for a bit, I like Riki Lindhome better with Natasha Leggero in Another Period.

I recently caught Chelsea Peretti's "One of The Greats" standup on Netflix...she does a great job.

Jcn, the women out there who are just like her who find her very captivating. The title of her movie “Trainwreck” is the most excellent adjective to describe her humor and her fan base. Those women in their 20’s-….even 40’s 50’s who pride themselves in being fat drunk whores revel in her sorts of jokes, then when you call them out for being exactly that- fat drunk whores, they bitch.

I thought it was “Ok” for 2011 when she first came about, but she really hasn’t "turned that corner” or is “tearing it up" as others have claimed

Schumer works her sex appeal into her act in an ironic way. She knows she doesn't conform to society's conventional standards of beauty, but she plays a character who's completely oblivious to this. And I think the magazine covers are more virtue signaling by the magazine people. They go to her and offer her money for a cover shoot - is she supposed to say "No, I'm not pretty enough?"

because I just see her as a below mediocre comedian getting more notice simply because she is a woman? I saw Ellen more than 10 years ago do stand up in New York and I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did but her stand up was phenomenal and her wit was surprisingly great.
It's a character
flapjack : 5/22/2016 9:08 pm : link
And it's making her a ton of money. In ten years she'll be playing a cop on Law and Order SJW or dancing with housewives on daytime television. Who knows? I do know it will be more interesting than the evolution of Kim Kardashian.
Not only do I not find her funny
Matt M. : 5/22/2016 9:09 pm : link
I don't think she is really pushing the envelope. There are a number of female comics with similar humor. They just don't make every joke in their arsenal a cock joke, drunk joke, or vag joke, or some combination. I don't like her, but Lisa Lampinelli is an example. Sarah Silverman is another. Leslie Jones is another.

Ellen is one of the funniest standup comics, male or female. She is very underrated because people get caught up in her being a lesbian. She is a very witty comic with great delivery.

Thanks for the link, going to have a listen. Joe Rogan was also the driving force behind everyone knowing Carlos Mencia was stealing jokes too

comics dont own concepts. The idea that you sleep while someone else works out for you is not original to some comic in the last few years. It's a concept that a lot of regular people imagine for themselves.

Stealing a bit is a problem. Having the same concept? Come on. Having ONE very similar joke in a bit will happen. It's the nature of comedy.
Rogan

I agree he's better as an MMA announcer/show host than a stand-up.

With Mencia though, he was standing up for a group of his friends and was the only one to get in Mencia's face about it. Haven't listened to the above link yet, but I can't say anything negative about him for standing up to Mencia.
So Joe Rogan thinks maybe she recycled some material
Greg from LI : 5/23/2016 10:08 am : link
but he wouldn't say she plagiarized and it's not that big a deal? Kind of hilarious considering how he made Carlos Mencia out to be Ted Bundy for ripping off jokes.

But it seems that there are a lot of people within comedy who really like Schumer and want her to succeed, and who thus are willing to brush off a lot of criticism from her that they would pour on someone else.

Except just about every one of those bits in the video is almost exactly the same as the original. Little to nothing was changed. so, it hardly qualifies as an original idea that someone else also had.

From the stuff I've seen, I'd like to see the explanation for the Patrice ONeal stuff. But the slapping food or sleeping gym stuff? That's just the concept. Shoot, the Rogan thing says that the paying a man to take the food out of your mouth was on the Flintstones.

Apparently Mencia would go to shows with a notepad and write jokes down. And then steal them.

But yeah, I think some of it has to do with her being likable.

The retail store sketch on her show was obviously pulled from MadTV, the sex "positions" was like copying his act (it wasn't one joke, but a couple strung together), even if the slap chef bit was on the Flintstones, then fucking admit that's where you got it, but it's not an original idea, etc. It would be one thing if they were simply similar ideas. But, in almost every instance little to nothing was changed.
the retail sketch was identical
Greg from LI : 5/23/2016 10:52 am : link
But there's some plausible deniability there because the show has a team of writers, not just her.
Coming up with the same
steve in ky : 5/23/2016 11:02 am : link
premise is believable because some minds just see things in the same way and would naturally have the same take on a situation.

Coming up with almost identical jokes to such a wide variety of different comedians seems too far fetched to be a coincidence.
Worth pointing out again
BlackLight : 5/23/2016 11:30 am : link
that pretty much every comic she has supposedly taken jokes from has come out and said they don't think that these were cases of joke theft.
