So we've stopped in Charlotte en route to Myrtle Beach, and had breakfast at the Midnight Diner in view of Bank of America Stadium. Naturally I wanted to hear what the locals think about losing Josh Norman.
There is overwhelming confidence down here in Dave Gettleman. It was pointed out to me that he drafted 3 CBs and cut anthother veteran signee. The Panthers have a strong system and the local consensus is that Josh Norman benefited greatly from having some very good players that grew up around him including a very good Dline, and safety coverage up top. For what it's worth, no one i spoke to here thinks he's going to be as successful outside their system. They are all much more concerned about keeping Luke K.
Norman is a good player but the front 7 was the strength of the team. They made the right move not paying him and won't miss him much.

Their safeties last year would have been our best unit :(
I personally think he's good not great as well but he does fit the Skins defense. It's a good signing for the Skins but he's still overrated.
The transition from Reese as head of college scouting to Ross has sucked and let's hope they corrected the issues.
Talk about drafting for position...
Yeah could be. Come to think of it the dishwasher was listening in and he had a french fry behind his ear.
But not representing asshatery, just local perspective.
You talk about “overwhelming confidence” and “local consensus” but from whom…the 3 or 4 Panther fans you spoke to in a diner?
And even if you spoke to more Panther fans than that how many of them are really qualified to evaluate Josh Norman’s talent and whether or not he’ll be successful “outside their system”? (If you think I’m wrong, try walking into a Jersey diner or NYC restaurant and getting a general consensus from people who claim to be Giants fans on whether Eli is a good QB or just lucky to win two Super Bowls.)
Also, do you think there might be some sour grapes at work here? Norman wanted more money and got cut. It sounds like what the fans “believe” is more wishful thinking than informed opinion.

Jk...I knew you were getting perspective from the loco's

but he's the closest thing to Mark Collins in the game today.
Does anyone here have a perspective of Norman before 2015? He was benched and almost cut in 2013. Was a healthy scratch for 5 games at least. In 2014, he regained the starting role and played well, but the defensive scheme also changed to emphasize the LB play and put the CB's in an area coverage. That continued into 2015.
Mark Collins? I don't remember him struggling or being a product of teh scheme. Put it this way - in 2013 and 2014, Norman was called on to play mostly straight up man and failed terribly. How can a guy get paid to be a top player when he only covers a portion of the field?
If the Niners had the 2015 Norman during the Harbaugh era, they win a chip one of those years for sure. That front 7 was better than Carolina's and Seattle's. You see any of those Niner CBs get $15 million per from anyone? Culliver got $8 million per from the Skins, which some claim was a lot.
Norman is for sure a top 10 CB, probably top 5. At some point you just have to suck up the cost for that talent level.
Meanwhile Richard Sherman playing with a more talented cast and scheme will continue to be seen as top 3.
Was Richard Sherman ever benched? Mark Collins? Revis?
We are talking about a player that wasn't just benched in 2013, he was a healthy inactive for several games.
All that tells me is there is hope for Cooper Taylor.....

Cooper Taylor would have to stay healthy, that may be a problem.

Corey Webster.
I agree though that Norman isn't going to live up to expectations in WAS.

Sherman plays man coverage in his scheme.
Norman did not.
