NFT: Yanks talk 5-23

superspynyg : 5/23/2016 10:33 am
Great series against the A's this weekend. A 4 game sweep to get us to 5 in a row.

Mateo should make the move to double A in the next month. He has 5 hrs already. There is a rumor that he at one point may have been offered to the Padres for Kimbrel. I cant confirm that. Glad that fell through and we got Chapman for a song. Even if Chapman is only for this year (we either trade him at the dead line or he signs elsewhere).

Rumor is Judge is getting reps at all OF positions.

Here is a small Yankee draft need preview article.

Feeling good today...

Pitching looked much better, albeit against the A's, but still encouraging. Bullpen is great.
It would be great to deal one of Miller or Chapman
Matt M. : 5/23/2016 10:46 am : link
near the deadline, assuming we are out of contention. But, if not, I can't see dealing either. Those back 3 could make a difference in a tight race.
I just can't wait to see what happens this off season

We lose some big contracts. But, what is Cashman's plan to replace them?
Thairo Estrada to Tampa...
Dunedin81 : 5/23/2016 10:51 am : link
he does a little bit of everything well and has been very good for Charleston in the early going.

I don't know who will be available. I was hoping Strasburg might have hit the market. oh well!
You don't draft for need...

that said, I'd love to see them bring some top-tier OF talent into the fold. Below Aaron Judge there are a number of guys with ceilings as big-league regulars or 4th OF types (Cave, Heathcott, Mason Williams) but below that it's really just dreaming on guys with the stray intriguing tool (Jhalan Jackson with his power, for one).

Pitching too, we have a lot of good starting pitching prospects, guys who likely have 4-5 ceilings, 3 if all breaks well, but outside of Kaprielian (whatever his health status is right now) and Domingo Acevedo we don't have many guys with star ceilings.
So Cave is a 4th OF type
arniefez : 5/23/2016 11:18 am : link
he has been very good this year. Better in AAA than AA so far.
It would be nice to keep ARod on the Bench
Jeever : 5/23/2016 11:28 am : link
Beltran seems to excel as DH and it opens up space for the young guys to get reps in the lineup. Hicks needs all the reps he can get in the field. He takes some strange routes to the ball.

He has a shot to be a little more than that, especially if this early year power-surge is enduring. 20-30 SBs, 12-15 HRs and a .290/.350/.440 or so slash would be a very good player.
re: minor league OFs
giants#1 : 5/23/2016 11:51 am : link
they seem to have several guys (Cave, Gamel, Heathcott, Fowler) whose ceilings are likely Gardner. Not many OF prospects, outside of Judge, with big time power potential.

Moving Chapman at the deadline should be made with the clause that Ellsbury is part of the package. A team like the Cubs might bite on that as they could use a shut down closer & they need another OF. And Theo knows him from Boston. Would love to get rid of his salary & let the best CF on the team (Gardner) play his position.
Thairo's promotion
Phil in LA : 5/23/2016 12:00 pm : link
is probably an indication that they're also promoting Mateo. Thairo has some pop and a nice ceiling.
Gary Denbo with some quotes in LoHud...

Ellsbury, McCann, Teixeria, Tanaka

Have full no trade protection. Beltran, CC & Arod have no trade protection too but not sure exactly what that means.

Chapman, Miller, Betances, Gardner, Headley, Castro, Didi, Eovaldi, Pineda, Nova are regulars that have tradable contracts with no protection.

So keep that in mind as we get closer to 7/31.

At least as of now Billy Fleming is the corresponding move. At some point Culver either goes to the bench or he goes to AAA and Mateo comes up.

CC and A-Rod have 10/5 rights. I think Gardner will have them too starting next year, so it would make sense to trade him soon if that's their intent.

is Girardi still an idiot for burning out his BP and going for that tough to get win 6 days ago against the DBAGS?

5 wins later....I guess not. I love how the Girardi bashers go away when things go well.

Girardi couldn't have handled the BP any better on this road trip. He was masterful.

see a lot of people mentioning trading Gardner and I don't get it. He is signed to a team friendly contract is a solid player. It's not like the Yanks are getting Trout for Gardner.
Meh
Dunedin81 : 5/23/2016 1:37 pm : link
It worked out because the bats were good enough, but yanking Eovaldi and Nova when he did was playing with fire. A decision serendipitously working out does not mean that it was the best decision, anymore than a choice blowing up in your face means it was the wrong one. I like Joe, I defend him frequently, but unless we get a cushion between us and .500 I worry he's going to manage like he's managing for his job.
I could understand it in Nova's case, but not Eovaldi's

So you are patting Girardi on the back for overmanaging in May? Really?

Did you forget that the Yanks were COMPLETELY out of gas after August last year? There is a reason for that- if you ride your pitchers and players hard early in the season, they aren't going to be there at the end.

Sure, there is an argument that if they don't push hard now, there won't be October baseball in Yankee Stadium. That's fine, but what do you do when they are tired in August and still need to win? The season is a marathon that you PACE yourself in- not sprint.

Let's see you come back in August. I love how the Girardi supporters vanish when the team fades.
Holy smokes
AJ23 : 5/23/2016 2:05 pm : link
Betances has logged 20.1 IP (73rd among relief pitchers), Miller 18.2 and Chapman is the least worked of any closer... period.

These guys aren't getting overworked. Perhaps the biggest benefit of adding Chapman is the fact that it takes considerable work/pressure off Miller and Betances.

At this time last year, Betances was up to 26 IP and Miller was at 22 IP.

This trade discussion is ludicrous. We're one game off last year's pace and no team in the East looks like what we had to deal with in Toronto last year.

This time last year, the Yankees were 22-21 and we made the playoffs. Betances and Miller had thrown more innings and appeared in more games. And that team started off being led by Texieria, who was batting .250 and had 13 HRs, and A-Rod - who was batting .275 with 10 HRs at this time.

But, yea - blow the team up and fire Girardi. Sure.
I've never been a Girardi fan
arniefez : 5/23/2016 2:31 pm : link
But lets face it baseball managers are just hood ornaments. You have to be a real screw up like Matt Williams to lose with a good team and the best manager, which is subjective anyway, makes no difference on a bad team.

I hate what the Yankees have evolved into. An old, passive, bloated organization that "manages" everything they do based on finances, an attempt to justify decisions already made and fear of injury or fear of being second guessed. Girardi and the way he handles the team is just a symptom of that malaise.

If Headley is a tradeable contract i would not wait until tomorrow to start shopping him.

No one is saying that. But you need to maximize assets. The Yankees have done a terrible job of this in the past. You don't just let guys walk. If you arent going to re-sign Chapman, you trade him. Simple as that. Get quality prospects or young MLB talent in return. Guys who could immediately help. Right now you have a team that is incredibly flawed. Beating the shit out of the As doesnt change anything.
What does last August
djm : 5/23/2016 5:38 pm : link
and the slide have to do with girardi's handling of the BP this week?

And please, save me any talk that Girardi didn't get every ounce out of last year's Yankees team. He most certainly did.

I love it. Going to the best and rested BP in baseball during a desperate game is playing with fire but leaving Eovaldi in is not?? Wow. When did this guy turn into mike mussina?

Sorry. Didn't mean to defend the Yankees mgr after a superb stretch of managing.

But, but....Randall says baseball managers are just hood ornaments.
The late August slide had nothing to do with the bullpen
Ron from Ninerland : 5/23/2016 7:28 pm : link
It had everything to do with Tex getting hurt, Arod running out of gas, Ellsbury and Gardner stinking up the joint, Headly being Headly and Bird alone carrying the lineup. Betances and Miller were as dominant towards the end as they are now. The only relief pitcher that struggled towards the end was Shreve.

The problem in late August is that they stopped hitting and have not been hitting ever since.
