Cooper Taylor has a sports hernia

Jints in Carolina : 5/24/2016 9:15 am
Cooper Taylor, hoping to cling to a roster spot after three disappointing seasons with the Giants, will be sidelined at least until training camp after surgery to repair a core muscle. NJ Advance Media reported that Taylor had suffered a sports hernia.

A fifth-round pick in 2013, Taylor has played in only 16 games with no starts. Injuries have always been part of Taylor's story.

In 2013, shoulder and hamstring injuries kept him out of games and off the practice field.
in 2014, a preseason foot injury landed him on injured reserve for the entire season.
In 2015, Taylor was waived, brought back and then -- when it finally appeared he might see legitimate playing time -- suffered a season-ending concussion.

I feel badly for him. I also think that it is time to let him go. It is critical that our defense of backs, especially our safeties, get to gel as a unit and spend time getting to know each other's abilities and tendencies as we try to find our top guys. June 1?

Now he's out until training camp begins. I've never seen a player who's more snakebit. He makes Gerris Wilkinson look like an iron man. It's a damned shame.

He is exactly the kind of guy you have to get off of this team. He may actually be infecting other players with his Injury Bug.

The guy is going to collect a full NFL Pension without ever making a single play.

I feel bad for the kid. You don't get a sports hernia from lack of

effort. His body just seems to break down too often. I could have seen him in our big nickel package, as he really can bring it when he's in the box. Now it's hard to picture him making the team, although he'll hopefully be healthy for at least most of camp, so he's got an outside shot.
We really have no choice by to move on, I think

JFC...how infectious is this injury bug that you speak of?!?! Is it airborne or do you have to change bodily fluids? I hope no one else contracts it!
NFW the Giants have an injury bug.
manh george : 5/24/2016 10:37 am : link
They have an injury plague. However, you are unlikely to catch it from a player with a sports hernia.
that sucks
UConn4523 : 5/24/2016 10:41 am : link
I suspected after the draft he'd be on the outside looking in and unfortunately that seems to be the case. Some guys just can't shake the injury bug. His constant injuries are something we just need to cut our losses with and move away from even if it heals quickly.

the guy just has bad luck. If he had a history of dependability and/or quality play I'd gamble on him for the final 53, but I just don't see how the Giants can risk it.

Oh...I agree with you. I had such high hopes for him after reading about his preseason performance several years ago. And I especially had a soft spot for him as he plays the position I played in high school and freshman year in college as well as suffering from the same heart condition WPW syndrome.

But as you said, at this point, unless he blows everyone out of the water come training camp, I can't see him making the team with how much time he's missed.

With the rookie and other young safeties, it was going to be a battle to begin with. Now, missing OTAs and having yet another injury, he's got to be at the bottom of the depth chart.
Cooper Taylor Has Been Injured A Lot...
Jim in Tampa : 5/24/2016 11:05 am : link
And given the talent that has been added at safety (including the returning injured players) Taylor likely would have had to show a lot more than he has previously just to make the roster.

However, let's not overreact about this.

He's been in the system for a while so he doesn't need OTAs or mini-camp to learn the playbook. If he is fully recovered in time for camp, he'll still have his opportunity.
Ok he comes back in July for Training camp

Two things. Early in his career Phil Simms got hurt every year for a good number of years and the papers were full of stories that he was injury prone and then he stopped getting hurt and had a great career. From what I can tell, it's not like he has chronic issues like a Beason or Terrell Thomas. Shit happens and stops.

Second, even the new safety of the guys coming back from injury, it's not like the team is very strong at the position. If Taylor can play the position and stay healthy, he can make the team and contribute. He has ability

not to say the kid isn't injury prone (he obviously is), but a sports hernia operation isn't all that bad. I've had the surgery (he might even use the same Dr I did in Philly, who has worked on several NFL players) and was able to run in a month and was good to go in 2 months. I was 30 at the time and obviously not a professional football player with NFL facilities and PT's at my disposal...so looking at this injury in a vacuum, he'll be fine. whether he hurts something else afterward (or while rehabbing) is another story.
Beyond the injuries, I recall Taylor has been a healthy scratch

ColHowPepper : 5/24/2016 6:09 pm : link
and it was just a couple of weeks ago that someone started a CT thread (once again) touting his potential to fortify the S position.

Thing is, I think it was 2015 the season (more-or-less-ending) injuries were in abeyance, for a while, when CT got a fair amount of reps in camp and exhibitions, and SS was not exactly high on him, implying pretty directly that he did not know his assignments. That might even be more damning than the recurring injuries, in his third year, albeit not all under Spags.

Yeah but you forgot to factor in that Simms played before the salary cap era and on an 80 man roster. Not to mention, Simms played in enough games to show the team that he was worth the wait.

Giants' #1 QB. AND 7 or 8 starters later, when Phil arrived as this top 10 draft pick out of (WHERE?!!!) Moorehead State, any idiot could see immediately that Phil Simms was a different animal re his ability to throw the ball.

I'd missed Tittle, and Phil was the first real QB I'd ever seen on the Giants. It was glorious to watch him throw...

Cooper Taylor shows nothing of the promise Simms showed from day 1.

to make the team as a backup S and ST player (where he'd done well, when healthy) then Jackson or M Thompson might rotate back to CB.

Guilty as charged!

Allow me at least one vice on this site.

I try not to annoy too many BBIers and try to provide useful insights, but I frankly admit that I will shamelessly brag when I was right about something having to do with the Giants.

In the case of Cooper, you can go back a long, long way and I was saying the same thing.

Still, that's no excuse for my occasional bragging.
