NFT: Mets and Nats Game 2 Mets chat 5/24

ZGiants98 : 5/24/2016 9:21 am
LET'S TAKE FIRST PLACE!!

Can Harvey finally rebound?

"I'm not a quitter, Harvey exclusively told ESPN on Monday. I'm not going to just quit and put the ball down. It's a fight.

Lucas Duda to the DL. Ty Kelly to the Mets

Travis d'Arnaud (rotator cuff) has started to throw at home in California with no apparent difficulty. He is due to report to the Mets complex in Florida midweek. Meanwhile, Zack Wheeler is back throwing off a mound after April surgery to remove an undissolved stitch from his original Tommy John surgery. He remains on track for a return to the majors near July 1. Read more at MLB.com.

Losing Murphy to the Nats is doubly hard to take
steve in ky : 5/24/2016 8:38 pm : link
Not having him hitting for the Mets hurts us and his hitting for the Nats is helping them.

Have to think we would be in first if he was still on the roster. Being 1/2 game out of first you know he has won them a handful of games already this season.
Could you imagine if cespedes didn't magically fall back into
bhill410 : 5/24/2016 8:38 pm : link
The mets lap and we were watching both cespedes and Murphy do this on other teams while we watched likes of deaza and Campell every night? I'm not sure if it's fair but Sandy really makes me angry sometimes and watching my favorite met of last 15 years smack home runs for their rival after begged to come back on a reasonable contract does nothing to endear him.
Okay, we get it...

2 for 3 in his rehab start tonight, played 6 innings at 1B.

Cecchini starts for LV.

has turned into a batting practice pitcher. Give the starts to Logan.
What else are we supposed to belabor
bhill410 : 5/24/2016 8:43 pm : link
Looking at this lineup in its current state? Cespedes and conforo are the only legitimate bats and we have automatic outs at 3 spots plus pitcher.
Well, I'm not going to belabor the point after this.
PhiPsi125 : 5/24/2016 8:43 pm : link
I really don't know how a pitcher just loses his ability to "locate" his pitches for this long. Especially Cy Young caliber pitcher. Boggles my mind but it obviously ain't anything physical. Send him to the minors and let him figure it out there. Strasburg didn't go though anything close to this, for those who like to compare.

I can be frustrated and vent when he hits a monster HR off of us.

Everyone else does about things they feel strongly about.

ZGiants98 : 5/24/2016 8:43 pm : link
Struggles to me is that he wilts like a flower the moment he runs into trouble in the middle innings. His body language is awful and proceeds to pitch batting practice after. What a mess.

Actually Strasburg had an almost identical ERA and numbers up until the point last year but it's always nice getting a swipe the moment we start losing.

+1 That's what it said on the telly.

Like Cespedes
ZGiants98 : 5/24/2016 8:50 pm : link
Murphy never hit anywhere near this at any point in his career. Since his work with Long last August he has had a meteoric rise. No team in baseball wanted Murphy last year including the Nats who explored every other option BUT Murphy until they had no other choice.

A little sensitive are you?

Well, I was comparing numbers in Strasburgs second year off of TJ surgery, like Harvey...not last years numbers. You are right about last years numbers but that's not what I was comparing.

You are free to post whatever you want.. just pointing out that you've expressed your point that you wanted them to keep Murphy about 500 times over the last few months. I think you've made it known. If you want to keep making it known.. go ahead, I suppose.

Not for nothing but if there wasn't a pick tied to Murphy, I bet he would have been signed much sooner. The pick is affecting FA a lot more than it used to. Let's not minimize how good of a hitter Murphy has always been.

500 times really?

We are playing the Nats, and he is killing us, it's a fair comment.

It's not about making it known, it is simply talking about how I feel just like everyone else does on these threads. Not sure why you have such a problem with it but sorry to bother you so much.

That could be true but I don't remember much of a market at all. Some people were surprised he got a 3 year deal once it got late. Put it this way, the Nats would have rather traded real talent for Phillips than simply sign Murphy and lose the pick. Your point is valid though.

Exactly. Does he want a doggy biscuit for doing what the rest of the league is doing? Smacking around Harvey? Kudos Murphy...you're special.

Harvey sends word through PR that he's not talking. Weak. Gotta be accountable.

Mike Vaccaro
Matt Harvey and accountability: not on speaking terms. #Mets

Matt Ehalt
So there will be no answers tonight other than Terry and Plawecki.

David Lennon
Harvey left. Didn't stick around for postgame. "He's not going to converse tonight," #Mets spokesman just said.

Kristie Ackert ‏@Ackert_NYDN 20m20 minutes ago
Harvey is not speaking to the media post game. #Mets

Anthony DiComo
Matt Harvey bolted the stadium immediately after the game tonight. Didn't stick around. He won't be discussing his start. #Mets

Mike Puma
Harvey left the ballpark before speaking to the media.

Maria I. Guardado
Matt Harvey has declined to speak to reporters.

sphinx : 5/24/2016 10:38 pm : link
Rich Coutinho
forget about the media Harvey not talking is not fair to his teammates who were forced to speak for him totally unacceptable on every level

Anthony DiComo
Why is it important to talk after games like this? One reason only: Not doing so leaves your teammates out to dry, forced to answer for you.

Mike Puma
I don't think Kevin Plawecki was too thrilled having to answer Matt Harvey's questions. But, to his credit, Plawecki is a pro.

John Harper
When Harvey bails, it's not just a bad look, it falls on teammates like Plawecki to answer for him. It doesn't go unnoticed in clubhouse.

Matt Ehalt
Players usually like to talk about teammates' success and praise him. Not so much why a teammate, who bailed on the media, is struggling

Rich Coutinho
not talking post game is just making it harder on every level answering a few questions not too.much to ask

Pretty weak..
arcarsenal : 5/24/2016 10:45 pm : link
I've been in Matt's corner this whole time but you gotta stand there and be accountable and answer questions when things aren't going your way. Your true character comes through when you're at your lowest.. bad look for him. It's sore loser stuff.

I can't even imagine how frustrated he is right now... but you gotta take your medicine and deal with it. Don't leave your catcher out there to dry and make him answer for you. That's shitty.

Terry Collins on Harvey's next start: Weve got to think whats not just best for Matt, but whats best for us moving forward." #Mets

Matt Ehalt
Terry: We got to think not just what is best for Matt but what is best for us moving forward at the moment. A lot of things to consider."

Matt Ehalt
Terry: Im pretty surprised. Im really surprised. This guy is too good to continue like this.

Oh that Matt Harvey...such a likeable guy.
PhiPsi125 : 5/24/2016 10:50 pm : link
He continues to bring this shit on himself. No wonder fans and the media get on him. He's such an unlikeable prick. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Mental midget.

Agreed.
Not that I even care anymore

But this is what to I was referring to earlier...

I am not sure
NJGiantFan84 : 5/24/2016 11:02 pm : link
The Mets sign both Murphy and Cespedes. I know Murphs contract isnt that bad but it may have been too much that they wouldnt have persued Cespedes. Id rather have Cespedes and Walker than Murphy and De Aza. That is how I look at it, despite hating that Mirph is not on this team anymore.
Z, while the comparison is eerily similar, Strasburg was
PhiPsi125 : 5/24/2016 11:07 pm : link
insanely good immediately after this start for the remainder of the season. I didn't watch Strasburg last season while he was going through it but outside of the numbers, it may have been quite different. Plus, I don't see Harvey snapping out of this any time soon. Don't think he has the mental makeup for it.
Yeah my point
ZGiants98 : 5/24/2016 11:19 pm : link
was more just that really really good pitchers, aces even sometimes, go through weird stretches for a while. In Strasburg's case last year it lasted almost 2 months into the season.

I mean they could DL Harvey right now, send him to AAA for a few weeks or something (happened to Strasburg last year) and once rediscovering himself he could come back and pitch a dominant second half also. Would really be the same thing.

At this point Im not counting on anything though. Harvey is the 5th starter and its a mess.
You got to DL him
ZGiants98 : 5/24/2016 11:25 pm : link
with "dead arm" or something and send him to St. Lucie. He needs to start from scratch down there. Maybe having Wheeler around him essentially just getting going too will be good for him.

Roll with Gilmartin or Verrett in the 5th spot for now and pray we don't need to do the same thing with deGrom soon.
Yeah, I'm with you. We all want Harvey to get back to his normal
PhiPsi125 : 5/24/2016 11:28 pm : link
self, no matter what our feelings about him are. I wish I had more insight on what Strasburg was going through last year. It would help me to draw a comparison because the similar numbers don't mean much to me. And that's not a slight to you. It's just hard to put context behind the numbers.

But stuff like walking out on the media says a lot about Matt. I mean, the entire team went out to watch Harvey throw a simulated game a few days ago in support and then he does this. I hate it mostly because it only validates what a prick he is. Believe me, I want to be wrong.
I don't like that he didn't
ZGiants98 : 5/24/2016 11:31 pm : link
want to talk to the media either. Its a bad look.

Man. If you would have told me we'd be down Harvey, deGrom, Duda, and TDA heading into the season (deGrom might return to normalcy soon) I would have said we were screwed. We are a deep team but losing two aces and two 800 OPS hitters? Yikes.
And down =
ZGiants98 : 5/24/2016 11:32 pm : link
Not performing also (TDA was ice cold before he got hurt anyway)
I'm not worried at all with DeGrom. He's proved that he can pitch
PhiPsi125 : 5/24/2016 11:36 pm : link
very well with the dimished velocity. Speed isn't everything. DeGrom is a true gamer and professional. When he has a bad outing, he sits with the media and specifically points out everything he was doing wrong. He doesn't mope and walk out on his teammates.

Now, their situations are a little different but I truly think that Harvey exacerbates thinks with his attitude. Maybe.
Yeah, things were really set up nicely for us going into
PhiPsi125 : 5/24/2016 11:38 pm : link
this season. Is it so hard to ask for a little luck for once?
I don't blame Harvey for not talking
CMicks3110 : 5/24/2016 11:41 pm : link
if I were in his situation, I'd probably do the same thing. He's an emotional pitcher, competitor. What was he going to say?
Man....
ZGiants98 : 5/25/2016 12:01 am : link
Gilmartin picked the wrong night to get bombed in Vegas. He has been good all year until tonight. Nice to see Cheech return and go 2-2 with two doubles though.
Win tomorrow and all is well
Eric on Li : 5/25/2016 12:10 am : link
the roster has issues and there certainly needs to be improvement pretty much all the way around, but on the positive side we're way ahead of where things were last May. Very few teams just go wire to wire 20+ games over .500. Stay in striking distance, tinker with the roster where necessary and hopefully peak in the 2nd half.

More diva-ness from Harvey is frustrating just from the pov that you'd like to see him grind his way through it and not seem like a phony tough guy. I know he had another rough outing but it happens. He's a highly talented high maintenance pitcher. Wright should throw out his lunch tomorrow.
