NFT: Mets and Nats Game 2 Mets chat 5/24

ZGiants98 : 5/24/2016 9:21 am
LET'S TAKE FIRST PLACE!!

Can Harvey finally rebound?

"I'm not a quitter,” Harvey exclusively told ESPN on Monday. “I'm not going to just quit and put the ball down. It's a fight.”

Lucas Duda to the DL. Ty Kelly to the Mets

Travis d'Arnaud (rotator cuff) has started to throw at home in California with no apparent difficulty. He is due to report to the Mets’ complex in Florida midweek. Meanwhile, Zack Wheeler is back throwing off a mound after April surgery to remove an undissolved stitch from his original Tommy John surgery. He remains on track for a return to the majors near July 1. Read more at MLB.com.

Thor is player of the week

I don't blame him for not talking
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/25/2016 12:19 am : link
What's the point? There's no solution he can offer. There's no explanation he can offer. They're only going to ask him how he feels, how his arm feels, and how he feels performing this poorly, which is nothing but meaningless words.

Just have to pitch through it, whether at this level or in the minors.

It's May. It's early.
I'm more worried about the offense than Harvey
chris r : 5/25/2016 12:20 am : link
I can't remember a team winning it all with an offense as HR dependent as the Mets'.

They need a few more tough outs.
Also pretty stupid of the media to wag the 'accountability' finger
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/25/2016 12:24 am : link
Like he's not accountable to the team or his teammates for poor performance. Just because he didn't speak to the writers doesn't mean he blew off the team or doesn't care. Stupid media take.

PhiPsi125 : 5/25/2016 12:40 am : link
interviews after tough losses where there are "no solutions" to offer but this baby decides "fuck it, I'm out" because he feels like it. Like it or not, meeting with the media is a part of the job. He shits the bed and then ducks out. Does anybody really expect anything groundbreaking to come out of these interviews? Of course not. But it's what you do. He's a baby. Grow up.

SethFromAstoria : 5/25/2016 12:53 am : link
is one of those nights where I make lots of friends. The charm comes out and I tell people how it is from my point of view...

Honestly so many fans are such a bunch of low level amateur pathetic so called fanatics that they literally ruin watching for some of the rest of us. The overly dramatic...the emotional...the lack of common sense and any visible experience... It's seriously fucking pathetic. It can be frustrating to see it right here on BBI, also to know that there are people out there far worse, and also to know that some players and staff on teams pay attention a bit too much to a single word or thought from anyone.

Then the media....

This guy Mike Vaccaro can seriously eat a dick and rot. Hope the guy has a serious legitimate personal issue. Because its a guy like that who causes players to consider leaving, or not want to come play here. It's this type of hack trash with a typewriter that leads the story and pushes his agenda, and while it would be nice to say "just ignore it", the problem is that I mostly do but most people don't. The trash he wrote tonight is the exact reason why Harvey won't sit and talk to the media. Guys like him are the reason Harvey has to defend his pissing habits because some jerkoff demands an answer for his schedule of urination.

Professional players and coaches are asked to talk to the media as a courtesy and what the media does is spin that to make it something that is mandatory and defining of an athlete's character. Again, same thing happned with Larry Brooks and Dan Boyle. No ne owes this dickback a thing and he can go fuck himself.

If and when Matt Harvey leaves, remember this week and these reactions and these reporters as the reason why. It is a disgrace and sickening....and if you agree with him you're a fucking dumb ass tool as well. I assume that's many of you.

Here's the deal....nothing about Harvey has been true aside from these things:

- Velocity is down
- Thinking too much and missing spots
- Leaving too many balls over and givign up too many hits and homers especially.

Here is what isn't true:

- "He has never accomplished anything" yeah he has. He's been one of the most dominating pitchers in a sport that has a bunch of high level elite ace pitchers. He was 3 outs from a complete game shutout in the World Series. Instead he went 8 and gave it all he had in a season where he threw over 210 innings after TJ surgery. One of the best pitching performances I have ever seen in person and in general and anyone who says otherwise is a liar.

- He doesn't have heart or toughness - so fucking stupid it may not be worthy of an answer but see: last year and every game he has ever pitched.

- He is a baby or a whiner or some nonsense.... Matt Harvey takes the ball and pitches his ass off every time he is supposed to. Every single time. He never wants to come out or come off the field. All of the other shit is media nonsense, made up by the media about their own portrayal of the guy.

Take a look...there are other aces and great pitchers pitching like ASS this season. Just like them, he will be fine and come back pitchig well. And all the media and fans who are in this bullshit right now will be there kissing his ass...Just sad to watch this shit after seeing it with OBJ in a similar way. The whole take down routine is fucking disgusting to watch

Hey, if you want to suck off Harvey and have your own little ESPN photo shoot with they guy while playing "hide the marshmallow" then go for it. But please spare the rest of us your 1000 word diatribe about how awful we are.

Ugh, you are the worst.

Holy shit your hollier than though fan shtick is old.

It's baseball for God's sake. Lighten up.
The Mets are discussing options
pjcas18 : 5/25/2016 8:05 am : link
for Harvey including DL (no clue how this gets allowed in baseball with nothing physically wrong, but it happens all the time), bullpen, do nothing, and demotion to AAA.

If Harvey is sent down to AAA, that might be the most precipitous fall since Cliff Lee.

Lee was sent down to the minors in his mid-late 20's, and the next year he won the Cy Young.

Maybe it's what Harvey needs.
.
arcarsenal : 5/25/2016 8:10 am : link
The problem with Harvey walking out is that you're leaving your catcher hanging and having to answer all your questions for you. That's not right.

I know he has no answers right now but you still have to stand in there and take the questions and just be honest.. I'm sure it's hard for a guy who has basically never struggled until this point to stand there and say "hey, I'm not a good pitcher right now. I've got to just keep working and figure this out.. " but it's what he should have done.

It's easy to be around and be in the spotlight when things are going good. But how you respond when they aren't is what ultimately tells people the most about your character. I've defended Matt as much as possible and will continue to in most instances and continue rooting for him to get back to what he was before.. but I can't back him on this. It's childish.
Strasburg pitched in AA
ZGiants98 : 5/25/2016 8:11 am : link
and AAA last year.

As for Harvey... "Dead arm". Easy.
.
arcarsenal : 5/25/2016 8:12 am : link
I think they should just DL him. Say it's arm fatigue, whatever. You can always DL a guy with a phantom issue.. happens all the time. Let him rest for a week or two and just re-collect himself and re-focus and then have him make a couple rehab starts in Vegas and see where he goes from there.
Im not even convinced

how does it work with rehab? Why did Flores have to wait until yesterday for rehab starts?

I didn't realize he was injured either and questioned it myself, but if he wasn't then just sitting around wouldn't accomplish anything.

I love how the media
Metnut : 5/25/2016 8:28 am : link
is butt-heart that Harvey didn't want to talk to them. That's the least of my concerns and now they will kill Harvey all week to turn the fans against him.

Put Harvey on the DL. No throwing for 10 days. Have him make a short start or two in AA, then another 1-2 in AAA. Wait until he looks "better" and then bring him back up. If all goes well, we'll have Harvey back with the team in 25-30 days.

Only other thing from last night was that I find it pretty amusing all of the snarky comments that Met fans made about Murphy once it was clear that he wasn't coming back. Guy was a good Met for years, learned a new position for us, and took a huge leap in his game at the perfect time and carried NYM to a WS berth and a pennant. I wish he had signed anywhere else (well maybe except NYY) than Washington.

Rubber game today. Matz is better than Roark. Let's get 2 out of 3, and have some positive vibes going into what should be a really fun weekend at Citi.
Also, anyone

Eh. I dont know. He might have had something little so they gave him so rest. Might also be a situation where if they really needed him they could have left him on the roster. Who knows?

First, relax, or take Harveys cock out of your mouth. As fans, we all want Harvey to turn it around. Here's when I started to feel Harvey was a bit of a pussy. Last year, playing the Phils and I think Utley hit a HR and a double his first 2 at bats. So what did our ace do next time he was up? He f'n hit him in the back and stared him down like he was tough. That bothered the hell out of me
Eh, I'd rather send him to the minors instead of DLing him.
PhiPsi125 : 5/25/2016 8:41 am : link
All that's going to do is have him go through the same motions that's gotten him nowhere for a month. Send him down to work with Viola and get some confidence back. IMO that's the best thing for him and the team.

Wrong. D'arnaud can't stay far enough away from this team. The dude fucking sucks. He's always hurt, his defense sucks and he's a .250 hitter on his best day. To say the mets need a legit catcher is an understatement.

If you're going to be an ass, at least be right.
Utley was traded to the Dodgers from the Phillies in August last season
This is the same media that made him a front page newspaper joke
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/25/2016 8:50 am : link
out of an unknown medical scare they had no information about, so if I was in his shoes, the media could take a walk too. I don't really have the patience to hear beat writers whine about how harvey wasn't there postgame to do their jobs for them. Kinda sucks that his teammates then have to be asked "How do you feel about Harvey", but I'm 90% sure his teammates support a guy they know put it all out there in the playoffs last season. They get it.

I wish I had more insight on what Strasburg was going through last year. It would help me to draw a comparison because the similar numbers don't mean much to me.

In 13 starts since his return from the DL, Strasburg put up a 1.76 ERA, 12 walks (1.32 BB/9), 110 Ks (12.07 K/9) and a .175/.208/.292 line against in 82 innings.

"It's been really good," Nats' skipper Matt Williams said. "It's health-related. It always has been. And I think he's just finished as strong as he could possibly finish."

Nationals' GM Mike Rizzo said the same in a recent MLB Network Radio interview, explaining that the ankle injury Strasburg suffered this Spring was behind his early-season struggles.

"He started off the season poorly with the ankle injury," Rizzo said, "and the ankle injury affected him more than we thought it would, more than he thought it would. It was really a precursor to all the back spasm stuff he had.

"Thank god he didn't change his mechanics and arm angle to the point that he would hurt his arm because of his ankle. But the ankle had a huge part of his early struggles."

That's the biggest thing I'm concerned with (him changing mechanics)
Eric on Li : 5/25/2016 9:17 am : link
and getting even more out of sync. Honestly we've all watched him enough to know he simply hasn't had the same stuff he's literally always had in prior years. Last night Strasburg was only a few mph faster but his FB was literally exploding past hitters and tailing with all kinds of movement. Harvey isn't spinning the ball on any of his pitches the way he used to - so there's a lot less explosiveness & life. That's why he's not getting swings and misses.

I don't think there's usually a minor tweak that fixes something like that. He needs to take 2 weeks off, work his way back slowly, and most importantly clear his mind to stop pressing. Collins said "this is the first time we've seen him press" and that was like 6 weeks ago. I can imagine he's even deeper in a hole mentally right now. Best thing they could probably do for him is send him to port st lonely to clear his mind and get some work in. That or a fighting pit in some remote desert.

Thanks Sphinx. So what that tells me is that aside from their weirdly similar numbers, their situations are completely different.

Strasburg's issues was a health/injury related issue. Harvey's issues are not health/injury related.

Somehow, that doesn't make me feel any better. At least they could pin-point what was affecting Strasburg. With Harvey, they are all just lost.
for whatever reason, Harvey has lost his self confidence. Someone
Victor in CT : 5/25/2016 11:00 am : link
stole his mojo. He just doesn't have that same confident, "fuck you you can't beat me" demeanor on the hill. Looks like he is questioning himself before every pitch.

sad part for the Mets is that this is a game that before the season

I love the fact that Harvey isn't going to give up (if you can call it that) and go to the minors or a phantom DL stint. It means to me that he feels fine which is the most important thing long-term.

just hope it isn't at the cost of W's.

Every win counts especially now that the Nats are playing like most expected they would play last year.
