At the time, I think it was hoped to discourage drafted players from skipping the last month or so of classes, so seniors would graduate and underclassmen would at least finish the year.
Now with underclassmen declaring for the draft in January, and almost all players skipping school to prepare for the combine and pro days, it is a stupid rule.
