NFL owners vote to "marginally" expand instant replay...

Mike in St. Louis : 5/24/2016 12:16 pm
"Including the amendment, reviewable plays for replay will now include:

- Plays involving possession.

- Plays involving touching of either the ball or the ground.

- Plays governed by the goal line.

- Plays governed by the boundary lines.

- Plays governed by the line of scrimmage.

- Plays governed by the line to gain.

- Number of players on the field at the snap.

- Game administration: penalty enforcement, proper down, spot of a foul, status of game clock."

and lots of time for more commercials.
It's interesting they still won't review

kicks to see if they passed within the goal posts. There would seem to be no more or less judgment involved than plays encompassing the sidelines or goal line.

Maybe it's an additional camera thing, though most broadcast games seem to have goal post cameras now.
Why does the NFL continue to cling...

to the referee review 'under the hood'. Why won't they initiate a replay official off the field?
don't all plays
JayBinQueens : 5/24/2016 12:39 pm : link
with the goal line already reviewed, or is that just scores

You won't think it's so good when you're bowing down before your Robot Overlords.
What exactly changed
AP in Halfmoon : 5/24/2016 12:44 pm : link
I thought the number of players could be reviewed today?
The only change is the last part
SwirlingEddie : 5/24/2016 12:46 pm : link
As with playoffs last year and now for all regular season games as well, the League Office may consult with on-field officials regarding game administration issues.
Robots will be playing
AP in Halfmoon : 5/24/2016 12:51 pm : link
With skill level programs similar to Madden. No more concussions, ACLs, etc.

Computer replays would be much faster. For starters, you don't have to wait 30 seconds for the ref to jog across the field. Plus, with some technology in the balls and first down sticks, they could auto-detect if a first down is achieved and eliminate the long, drawn out measurement (ditto goalline plays).

I think they would need an extra camera. IIRC, the current goal post cam is in the center so they would need to move that to one side and then add another at the other side.
Make the goal posts

taller....save a camera....
Penalty enforcement?
NoPeanutz : 5/24/2016 1:05 pm : link
So anytime there's an incomplete pass, throw the flag, and challenge for illegal contact or holding.
Is there
ryanmkeane : 5/24/2016 1:16 pm : link
anyone on earth that watches football and honestly thinks that more official involvement is a good thing? Is Goodell this out of touch with the product that is actually being displayed on the field?
It's a small thing, but if you want to fix the "goal posts" thing . .
TheManUpstairs : 5/24/2016 1:22 pm : link
. . . it's easy. Just put a cross-bar at the TOP, too. Make the kicker kick a "strike." No more kicks that sail a jillion feet over the upright, and we can't tell if they're good or not.

It just means if there is confusion or error over the enforcement of a penalty such as yardage or spot of the foul - not the penalty call itself - then the League Office can consult.

That sounds right, thx. Looking forward to games lasting 4 hours now.
I think the NFL needs to contract with IBM
T in NJ : 5/24/2016 1:57 pm : link
to use Watson to make the decisions. Feed Watson the video stream and select the type of analysis needed and let the machine do the rest.

They should also should put RFI chips on each tip of the ball put detectors under the field.

At the very least the fields can have programmable lights/sensors so the 1st down marker can actually appear on the field, instead of just on TV.
At this point, with the quality of NFL officiating what it is

I would prefer more replay, but I would want it either with a dedicated replay official in the booth or in a central office.
Make every play reviewable.
Jerz44 : 5/24/2016 4:02 pm : link
You get 2 per game.

Any time you get a play reviewed and you're right, you don't lose a review.

Simple.
