NFT: Physical therapy question

blueblood'11 : 5/25/2016 7:00 am
If there are any physical therapists out there my question is this. How can you tell the difference if someone is a good therapist and really knows their craft as opposed to one who appears to say and do all the right things and simply follows the script.

I'm a distance runner with a neck and shoulder problem that eventually landed me a cortisone shot. The therapist I was seeing I thought she was doing a good job but lingering symptoms have remnained and seem to have developed into a new problem.

I also had a groin issue that the same orthopedic sent me for therapy but with a different therapist. This therapist seemed to be on the right track and had some concerns so she consulted another who had more insight into what she felt was the problem. Wow. In a two day period there is no question my groin issue is soon going to be no issue at all.

I felt this girl really seemed to have more depth in what she was doing and I started to tell her about my shoulder and neck issue which she kind of hinted at she might take a look at once we get the leg going in the right direction. Both therapists work at the same facility and I don't want to cause a rift. But I am feeling like I have a lot more confidence in this therapist then the other.

there are some good ones, mediocre ones, and lousy ones.
I found one in Butler, NJ that got me back on the bball court 4 weeks after a calf pull as opposed to what the orthopedist told me at least 8 weeks. She is awesome and I have gone to her for a myriad of little aches and pains. When you find the one, the hell with feelings, it's your health!
There is a big difference....

Between a really good PT and an average one. One thing you could look for is board certification (OCS, SCS). That promises at least a degree of expertise in Orthopaedics. There are some clinics that are better than others. If you are in the city, I would recommend the Center for Musculoskeletal Care on 38th street (part of NYU). Hands down the best therapists I know.

If you email me through this site, I can see if I know anyone near your home. I am a PT by the way...

between some PTs and their passion/expertise. If you feel like you are getting better care from another PT, it is your right to switch. You could talk to the PT you prefer about the situation. It's your health.

I worked as a PT for years. Sometimes patients switched to me. Sometimes someone would switch away from me. Not everyone is a perfect match.

Hadn't read your comment all the way through and I can't figure out how to delete it.
Thanks for the info

I wrote this thread right before I went for my latest session. We talked again just a bit about the shoulder and neck and she asked me just a few pointed question about what the other tharepist did. She then did some pushing on my lower back as it related to my groin issue and then moved up to the middle of my back and a gentle pop occurred in my neck that felt really good and I told her so.

She moved even further up and worked on it for a few minutes and nothing more was done or said. I left feeling better. There is no question this woman knows what she is doing. The other girl helped but was unable to bring it all the way home. It was like we hit the wall and I was at a standstill. I know what I will do if more therapy is suggested with regards to me neck and shoulder.
