Lets take this series!
Matz will bid to win his seventh straight start when the New York Mets and Washington Nationals meet in Wednesday’s 1:05 p.m. ET rubber game at Nationals Park.
f Matz goes to 7-0 in a seven-start stretch with a win Wednesday, he would be the first Mets pitcher to do so since Steve Trachsel in 2006.
Looks like Mets might make a move regarding Harvey
Columnist Joel Sherman in the Post describes the Mets signing James Loney to cover first base during Lucas Duda’s absence as a no-brainer.
Flores went 2-for-3 and logged seven innings at first base as his rehab assignment began with Double-A Binghamton. Flores is eligible to be activated from the disabled list on Friday.
LGM!!
The guy who pitched 216 innings post-Tommy John and risked a nine figure payday by doing so quit on his teammates. lol, sure, geniuses.
He needs to go on the DL with a phantom injury or get sent down to the minors to work his shit out...
Yep he needs an extended spring training. Too bad Wheeler cant come a month earlier

“It’s a little early,” John Ricco, the Mets’ assistant general manager, said. “We really haven’t had discussions about that. It’s probably in the back of everyone’s mind, maybe, but nothing that we’ve even discussed internally.”

Steven Matz has a strike percentage of 68.6% this season, fourth highest in the major leagues among 137 qualified starting pitchers.
Even for Mets fans, the speed at which Harvey has gone from "LET HIM PITCH THE NINTH!" to "FIRE THE WIMP INTO THE SUN!" is stunning.
Cuddyer says it's a confidence issue, not a physical issue, and wouldn't send Matt Harvey to the minor leagues

"Happy Harvey Day!" feels like it was just yesterday. Oh, how things change...
Harvey is not getting the movement on his pitches the way he used to. That's why he seems to have lost command. By the time the pitch reaches the plate it's not where he intended it to be. Add to that the lose of velocity on his fastball. He hasn't adjusted. He's confused.
Something's different, his arm angle, maybe his grip. Something in his mechanics has altered how the ball reacts. And now its become a mental thing as well because he hasn't processed the change.
What surprises me is that Dan Warthen hasn't picked up on Harvey's problem yet. It's mental, yes, but only because it was physical first.
There will be some oohs and aahs this afternoon.

for those of you going to the game, you can't ask for a nicer day. wish I could get to the park today.
When he was at his best, he was hitting those low corners on the black at will (especially the inside corner against LH batters) and he's just not locating at all right now. Pitches are either missing badly or tailing right over the heart of the plate belt high and hitters are teeing off.
I also know that a lot of you disagree, but I feel that A LOT of this is mental/confidence related. The slightest bit of a problem and this guy folds like a deck chair. You can see it through is body language on the mound and in the dugout. I think it definitely plays a part in his meltdowns.
Strasburg was hurt...Harvey is not.
Big difference.
But I am in the minority in my belief that a stint in the minors could do wonders for him. Warthen hasn't been able to do anything with Harvey for two months. Not excited at those two working on the same crap with worse and worse results. Get Harvey out of the spotlight for a couple of weeks. Beat up on some minor league teams and come back with a vengeance. Who cares how he takes being demoted.
I don't get their thinking here.
Annoying.

It will be his last chance.
That would be Monday, right? Well I just bought tickets to that game. So hopefully he'll break out of his funk then.

just not gonna happen.
I've made this point many times but fans are just gonna be fans. Didn't like how he handled himself last night, though. He's gotta know better than that. Don't even give the stupid fucking media those headlines.
WHY WON'T MATT HARVEY TALK TO US? WE'VE ALWAYS TREATED HIM SO FAIRLY!
As for his injury in Spring Training, I fully believe that the team and Terry made that situation way worse than it could have been. Matt is under no obligation to explain his injury...but it's going to be discussed because he is a very popular public figure. The fact that the team created this aura of mystery coupled with Terry's comments about it only helped the media to go in their own direction. Add to the fact that Terry lets the media know that Harvey was pissed at the media...lol...way to help your player.
Harvey seems a bit thin-skinned, you think? If you want to live with a larger-than-life personality...then own it. You can't reap all the rewards and then piss and moan when things don't go your way. The fans and media will eat you up...and rightfully so.
Travis d'Arnaud worked out back in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday morning. He is throwing with no issue.
ESPN Staff Writer
Travis d'Arnaud worked out back in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday morning. He is throwing with no issue and will begin more rigorous baseball activity on Thursday, assistant GM John Ricco said. D'Arnaud is on the DL with a rotator cuff strain. He had been at home in California with his own physical therapist.

The #Mets are optimistic that Wilmer Flores can come off the disabled list when first eligible on Friday. He would become the starting 1B.

To me the bullpen is the big thing. When a pitcher starts hurting the team beyond on his own start, he has to sit. Don't understand why they are not giving him a few starts off to clear his head.
Even for Mets fans, the speed at which Harvey has gone from "LET HIM PITCH THE NINTH!" to "FIRE THE WIMP INTO THE SUN!" is stunning.
A lot of that has to do with Boras shooting his mouth off. Boras is a jackass, who is particularly hated by Mets fans. If you hire him as an agent, be prepared to have blow back.
If Harvey had fired Boras after last season, the fans would be way more on his side through his struggles. Just like they are with DeGrom. Matt chose to retain him so he made his bed and now has to lie in it.
Based on what i've seen, I would've given Harvey a break from MLB starts to get things cleaned up and worked. However, I don't think the Mets make these decisions lightly, and I'm sure Dan Warthen had input on this, so let's just hope for better results next time out.
I was one of the few nats fans that didn't mind shutting him down. he wasn't pitching well when they did. and in the NLDS vs. STL you would have taken away Detwiler's start which was brilliant...then in game 5 (which would have been strasburgs start) the BP still could have coughed up the game like it did anyway.

That's a little much. Roark as been very good this year. They want this game.

Great post. Some people love to fall back on the cliché that the media and fans suck but Harvey sought the limelight when things were going well and now wants to run and hide when things are not going well. Doesn't work that way.
Offensively Plawecki and Rivera are about the same. I'd take the better glove and send Plawecki for further education in AAA
Obviously Duda's back won't magically heal itself but Flores plus Loney (possibly) is alot better than Campbell.
Plawecki needs to stay down in AAA, to me Rivera beat him out for the backup spot based on his arm alone.
The Harvey I've seen slip through cracks is emotional and sensitive. He was borderline in tears when we clinched the division last year. He didn't like the media's comments at all earlier this season about his medical condition.
I mean this guy has been caught out in Manhattan drinking two glasses of "wine". lol.
Maybe he isn't who we thought he was. This entire situation and watching him completely fold like a tent in the middle innings sort of backs that up. He seems defeated.

nats sitting harper and revere with Roark vs. Matz. basically conceding.

I've been pleasantly surprised with Roark and, yes, they want this game, but taking out two of our better hitters against one of your best SP's is giving you guys a hell of an advantage. I bet Michael Taylor strikes out 4 times today.
only good thing is that Roark doesn't give up the HR's like some of our other SP's do.
FYI - its very warm and sunny today. it feels like summer time.
Couldn't disagree more. The NY media will always, without fail, use their own agenda for taking athletes down, with no sound reasoning whatsoever. Then, when things turn around, they forget it even happened, as if these athletes owe them something or somehow don't remember that they basically shit on people behind a computer for a living. This latest gem from Vaccaro:
But Harvey has long played by his own guidelines, and has been enabled to do so, the Mets complicit in allowing that to happen. When times were good in 2013, and for most of last season, that meant playing the role of man-about-town, of big-stage bon vivant. It meant cultivating this image that he was a man’s man, a tough guy’s tough guy, equal to the demands of both stardom and the big city.
What a joke.
And what an empty jersey he’s turned out to be.
This - coming after a guy who pitched 216 innings after TJ - the most ever in baseball history - all to please YOU, MIKE VACARRO, and delivered one of the most dominating performances in Mets World Series history to boot.
Maybe he's starting to get his stroke going now. Let's hope.
Cabrera in the starting lineup. But Reynolds takes the field?

Oh well...agree to disagree. Like I said, NY media is one of the worst, but it's not as bad as most people like to exaggerate it to be. I've read plenty of articles and comments in support of Harvey.
But whatever, ready to move on.
If Herrera catches fire again, call him up and move Walker to first.

with Plawecki. When TDA comes back, Id rather keep the defensive stud in Rivera as the backup. Send Plawecki's ass to AAA.

Lol. Sorry man. Nothing personal. He's has been dreadful offensively. He hasn't hit since AA!
Why would we hear about that? How often does Warthen really speak to the media?
Quote:
Didn't realize Warthen also declined to talk to the media last night. We haven't heard a peep about it.

The point is he WAS asked last night and refused.
Eric Campbell is this years Eric Campbell.
Probably De Aza is this years John Mayberry Jr who was last years Chris Young who was the prior years Rick Ankiel
Travis d'Arnaud worked out back in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday morning. He is throwing with no issue.
Good news. He's probably about 90 days away from returning now. And about 93 days away from going back onto the DL.

I know you're being funny but my guess is two weeks.
My go-to stat on René Rivera
Highest CS % - Active Catchers (250+ games)
Yadier Molina 40%
René Rivera 34.4%
That narrative is false if we are going off last year. He was fine throwing runners out. All depends on how that shoulder is.
Think you are missing a Fat Boy in there. I agree though. Hopefully Wheeler can hit the ground running when he comes back. I still have faith DeGrom can turn it around.
Yup. Looking that way.
Quote:
Send plawecki down and fuck d'arnaud. He's a liability in the field and teams will be running all over him when he returns.

Because a 5 game sample trumps 3 months? Ok.

They were 7-7 running on him, that's 100%, meaning d'arnaud threw out 0%. What about his passed balls? You're the statatician around here, what % of runners did he throw out last year?
Made me quite happy.
Need him to stay healthy.
I really want to enjoy the rest of this game though so think what you want.
Game may come down to Familia vs Harper: best low ball hitter in the game vs the best splitter in the game
We have another guy in deGrom without his best stuff so far.
We have a 43 year old.
And yet 4-5 nights a week we still get quality to shut down starting pitching.
Matz gets Harper. 8 shutout innings. 2-0 going nine. What an effort. Syndergaard/Matz have thrown 15 shutout inning vs. Nats.
LOL
Matz gets him
Great game
Extremely tough competition for Cy, but Matz building a nice ROY resume.
It is tempting to send Matz out for the 9th, but I think Familia is the prudent move
OMFG
The final: #Mets 2, Nationals 0
The star: Steven Matz
The streak: W1

Very nice to even the season series and get alittle revenge for last week.
What we need next is Flores and TDA back.
Hopefully we can get Harvey's head screwed on right.
Take away that first start and his numbers are as good as anyone's
Hard to believe the potential this team has if Harvey, Jdg, and eventually Wheeler slot into the rotation back to back with Thor and Matz. On the other hand the lineup needs work and Campbell is not the answer. Need to give whatever young guys we can a shot over the next 5 weeks and be ready to add a legitimate CIF in July if necessary.
Harvey's struggles aside all 4 of the Mets young pitchers ended up "the goods" and then there is Wheeler who may as well #Mets
good win. at least you guys know how I feel every time papelbon pitches in the 9th inning of a close game.
Steven Matz this season: 2.36 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 50 K's in 49.2 IP. Hasn't allowed more than two runs in a start since his first start. #Mets

AGree on the first 2. Rendon is quietly really heating up. Over the past month he has an .850 OPS, last 2 weeks it's over 1.000. He's a key piece for them. He was MVP caliber 2 years back, then a turd.
I don't think it's a symptom of Harvey. Matz is quiet. Like DeGrom. Who also doesn't get headlines.
Quote:
despite Murphy's hot start and the presence of Harper, Nats lineup not really all that intimidating. Zimmerman, Werth, and Rendon not really helping things at all.

I hear you on Werth and Z'man. unfortunately there is nothing we can do about either but hope...Revere missed the first month of the season and sucked for the first couple of weeks after, but he's heating up...Rendon is better after getting moved down in the order...Murph and Harper are good...Ramos is having a quite yet great season for him...Trea Turner will come up and replace Espinosa in less than two weeks and he is a much better hitter. at least he should be.
also, matz is great and make a lot of lineups look pretty mediocre especially with Harper and Revere out of the lineup today.
yeah, he was always a great defender, but he just was too one dimensional at the plate. he can blast a HR every now and then, but more than likely he's going to strike out or pop out and he's not gotten better.
Jeurys Familia has converted 32 straight regular-season saves, which breaks a tie with Billy Wagner (2006-07) for the #Mets record.
Matt Ehalt 10m
Nationals vs. Mets in 2016: Espinosa: 3-21 Harper: 1-17 Murphy: 9-22 Ramos: 4-21 Rendon: 7-21 Taylor: 1-6 Werth: 6-20 Zimmerman: 6-20
In half the games, Nats score one run or less, and in 1/3, they score zero runs vs. Mets. They're 19-18 since 9-1. Only time till Mets pass.
Mets just took a series here at Nationals Park starting Colon (43), Harvey (6.08 ERA), and Matz (stud). Nats had Gio/Strasburg/Roark.
Well, yeah, them and Bartolo
Matz really isn't that big but yeah, its nice.
Things sure changes from one season to the next
