He retired with a lifetime 328 average. 415 obp. Over 1000 rbis and dependable if not very good play at 3rd base. He was a great player, hr power be damned and he had sneaky power-- 760 extra base hits.
As a Sox fan I have no problem with him wearing the ring.
He won it he earned it. Sox could have signed him if they wanted to keep him. However, retire his number? They didn't feel he was worthy to retire A Red Sox but now they retire his number? I just don't believe he belongs up there with the other numbers retired. Great singles hitter with average and OBP but not worthy of number retirement in my opinion.
I've heard some put Boggs in the among the greats at 3B. He had 4-5 WAR MVP type seasons. One season above 9.
Anyone here really believe he was 5-time MVP? I dont. Anyone feel he's an all-time great at 3B? Top 5? I don't think so.
He was a one tool player, albeit he was excellent at that one thing. Good - VG defensive player. Really began to dip in his last season with NYY. Last two season with TB he was way below avg for a MLB.
I'm not even sure he'said the best 3B among his contemporaries.
Boggs averaged a over 6 1/2 HRs per season over the course of his career. He hit over 10 just twice in his career and over twenty just once (in a walk year) - at a time we all now know baseball was was beginning to juice.
For a guy that was 6'2". That's CI defensive replacement type power, playing a CI spot.

Agree with this 100%.
Boggs did everything you want in a batter but hit homers
Got on base at a ridiculous rate - .415 career OBP. Great contact hitter, lifetime .328 with a lot of doubles. Outstanding glove at third.
I mean, do you think Rod Carew is overrated? Because he and Boggs were very similar hitters, and Carew played half of his career at a corner position, too.
Top 5 at his position? I think he's at least in the conversation for the bottom of the list. I'd rank Schmidt, Brett, Chipper, and Eddie Mathews ahead of him. Boggs is right there in a group with Ron Santo, Brooks Robinson, and Scott Rolen in the next tier. He's definitely top 10 all time at his position.

His OBP is insane. Incredible eye at the plate.

Agree with Greg on this. Top 10 if not top 5, and closer to 5 than 10. Something like a 13-time all-star and 5-time batting champ, also won some Gold Gloves. Yes, he wasn't a HR hitter. He has stats most comparable to Carew and no one would say Carew's not HOF.
just a footnote on the ranking - I guess A-Rod could be either
