He will be retiring at the end of this upcoming football year.
Berman is definitely a guy whose at retirement age, but with the financial woes and bloodletting at ESPN, it makes you wonder if this decision was made for him.
Chris Berman to retire - (

I saw that too, something fishy is going on. His contract is up and ESPN isn't renewing it.
However, it is overdue, not only is his act old but he looks really unhealthy. I wonder if he's been popping too many 222's.
GONE!
Chris Berman is not retiring from ESPN, agent says... - ( New Window )
Nut I got to give him his due with making his mark on something whether I liked it or not.
Then shtick came in and that's all she wrote.
The ESPN draft days ROCKED with just Berman, Dr. Z and yes, Kiper...
I'm not a fan anymore - for many reasons stated above - but if anyone there has earned the right to go out on their terms, it's Berman.

A ton of these are posted on YouTube, and yeah, was great back in the day. An icon...but anything, most anything, gets old after awhile.
But he's tackled at the 5 yard line.
I was thinking the same thing when watching. I've never been a huge fan, but admire the career he built for himself. I've also heard that he's a nice guy (albeit a bit of a slimy one with women) off camera.
While critics complain he made it about himself and not the highlights, that was kind of what made ESPN different (and in it's early days, appealing). Going back to the 80s and 90s, the ESPN sportscasters adding their own personality to the story was kind of fun.
That being said, IMO he lost his fastball years ago, and has been kind of a sad caricature of himself for a while.
Yeah it is
Best 60 minutes of Football ever. Berman and Jackson back in the day were classic must watch TV.
Primetime Song 1 - ( New Window )
documented videos of him cursing people out etc.
As for the mothership...appears to be a shift to a younger look...Tirico gone.
