Berman out at ESPN following 2016 NFL Season

Ben in Tampa : 5/26/2016 10:36 pm
He will be retiring at the end of this upcoming football year.

Berman is definitely a guy whose at retirement age, but with the financial woes and bloodletting at ESPN, it makes you wonder if this decision was made for him.

Chris Berman to retire - ( New Window )
Met him before
Vin R : 5/26/2016 10:43 pm : link
Extremely nice guy
Grew up with Berman. But he looks horrible on tv.
drkenneth : 5/26/2016 10:51 pm : link
Good lord..a sweaty mess.
He's denying it
kporzee : 5/26/2016 10:51 pm : link
Probably a bunch of posturing, negotiating going on.
Long...

I saw that too, something fishy is going on. His contract is up and ESPN isn't renewing it.

However, it is overdue, not only is his act old but he looks really unhealthy. I wonder if he's been popping too many 222's.
That 'woop!' sound

ESPN may have leaked this to pressure him
jeff57 : 5/27/2016 6:28 am : link
to retire. He was always great on prime time, but he's terrible at play by play, and has become an embarrassment at the draft.
glad to see him go
Chip : 5/27/2016 6:39 am : link
Another announcer who thought it was more about him than the sport he was supposed to cover.
Berman
stretch234 : 5/27/2016 7:17 am : link
When they first started their NFL show it was him and I believe T. McGee. 2 guys doing the whole thing - actual analysis - it was really good. As it evolved to more entertainment it became 5+ people and really un-watchable.

GONE!
If true
joeinpa : 5/27/2016 7:48 am : link
I will miss him. Very difficult to last as long as he did in the limelight. And impossible to avoid critics as demonstrated here.

Chris Berman is not retiring from ESPN, agent says... - ( New Window )
Well,
Doomster : 5/27/2016 8:15 am : link
I loved the early Berman....but his predictions sucked as the Swami...
His shtick got old 25 years ago.
Crispino : 5/27/2016 8:39 am : link
Hope he enjoys his retirement.

arcarsenal : 5/27/2016 8:42 am : link
Hope he is. His entire act has been stale and shitty for a very long time now.
Get off his ass!
Tark10 : 5/27/2016 8:53 am : link
Berman has been the signature staple for ESPN from the beginning. Just as Cantore is the face of "The Weather Channel". ESPN has financial problems because bad management made bad decisions. If Chris is actually intending to retire, I wish him the best and he will be missed by many. 40 years is a long time.
This should've happened
Metnut : 5/27/2016 9:08 am : link
at least a decade ago. Maybe ESPN can hire someone who isn't a total hack to replace him.
ESPN getting squeezed by cable cord-cutters
lawguy9801 : 5/27/2016 9:19 am : link
Less revenue coming in from captive basic cable subscribers. This has happened with big-ticket names like Bill Simmons and others. Expect more of this in years to come.
This NFL draft was the one
Randy in CT : 5/27/2016 9:20 am : link
where I said to myself, "He's literally not making any sense when he talks". I hope he's OK mentally.
Maybe not but
steve in ky : 5/27/2016 9:25 am : link
he seemed to pave the way for ESPN to become personified by the annoying over the top talking head.

Nut I got to give him his due with making his mark on something whether I liked it or not.
I thought in the '80
Big Blue '56 : 5/27/2016 9:52 am : link
and early '90s he was terrific. Yes, his Jose let me take you on a sea Cruz got tiring, but otherwise he was fine, imv..

Then shtick came in and that's all she wrote.

The ESPN draft days ROCKED with just Berman, Dr. Z and yes, Kiper...
On the Mt. Rushmore of men who built ESPN...
bw in dc : 5/27/2016 11:02 am : link
Was hugely instrumental in building the ESPN brand.

I'm not a fan anymore - for many reasons stated above - but if anyone there has earned the right to go out on their terms, it's Berman.
Lot more time to enjoy those DEH DEH DEHs now

A ton of these are posted on YouTube, and yeah, was great back in the day. An icon...but anything, most anything, gets old after awhile.
AND HE COULD, ...GO...

ALL.......THE......WAY.......
But he's tackled at the 5 yard line.
good riddance
Victor in CT : 5/27/2016 12:11 pm : link
his act is staler than month old bread

I was thinking the same thing when watching. I've never been a huge fan, but admire the career he built for himself. I've also heard that he's a nice guy (albeit a bit of a slimy one with women) off camera.

While critics complain he made it about himself and not the highlights, that was kind of what made ESPN different (and in it's early days, appealing). Going back to the 80s and 90s, the ESPN sportscasters adding their own personality to the story was kind of fun.

That being said, IMO he lost his fastball years ago, and has been kind of a sad caricature of himself for a while.

Best 60 minutes of Football ever. Berman and Jackson back in the day were classic must watch TV.

Treats people like crap

documented videos of him cursing people out etc.

As for the mothership...appears to be a shift to a younger look...Tirico gone.

The sooner he leaves, the better ESPN will be. This dude became a caricature of himself about 20 years ago.
What's his five year plan?
