One of my favorite Keith Jackson moments came in his final game, that fantastic 2006 Rose Bowl with Texas and USC. There was a new show (which lasted all of one episode) ABC was promoting during the game called Emily's Reasons Why Not. Jackson is dutifully reading the promo, and just kind of gives up at the end: "Emily's Reasons..*brief silence* eh, I don't know"
I loved as a child Marv Albert's calls on the radio of Knicks and Rangers games in the early 70s, but it is this HNIC duo that to me was the pinnacle of not only their sport but all sports broadcasting throughout my years of fandom.
and the entire SF Giants announcing crew. I'm a Dodger fan but the Giants announcers are fair, reasonably even handed in their analysis and always on top of the game. They are a joy to listen to - even if I hate the team.

What's kind of eerie to me is that Vin Scully was the Dodgers guy when I first started completely following baseball in 1955 and the coot is STILL the announcer, though is he retired this year?
NBA - Marv Albert
NHL - Marv Albert
NFL - Marty Glickman
MLB - Ernie Harwell
Fond memories growing up listening to Marv call Knicks and Rangers. No TV of home games in those days so you listened and I swear I preferred radio broadcasts to TV. Wasn't even much of a hockey fan but I remember going to bed on Sunday nights and having my beloved clock radio tuned in just to hear Marv. Very calming as I faced the dreaded back to school Monday morning.
Barely remember Glickman but he had a great voice and no Giants broadcaster since has come close.
Harwell I didn't grow up with but what I did hear was damned good. He was better IMO than the much more hyped Scully.
Not necessarily because he's a good play by play guy (although he is) but because he likes dressing up in white panties. So here he's got this high profile, prestigious job, but the whole time you know that he's into dressing up in women's panties.
And for all we know....he's watching these large sweaty men hurtle around a court, and maybe he's wondering what kinds of underpants they have on.
"Irving takes the inbound, takes it toward mid-court, 105-104, 15 seconds to go, shot clock is off!...What's he wearing? Odds are they're probably basic white, cotton underpants. But I sort of think, well, maybe they're silk panties, maybe it's a thong. Maybe it's something really cool that I don't even know about. ..."James heads toward the paint, takes the feed from Irving..."
NFL - Marty Glickman
NHL - Win Eliot
NBA - Marv Albert
MLB - Russ Hodges
Marty, Win and Marv all had the ability to report everything that was happening during a play ... whether all they reported was happening or not was questionable ... but they made the listener feel like it was ...
Russ Hodges for the most memorable reporting ever that made Ralph Branca a household name for generations ... despite a slightly above average rather non-descript career ...
In the old Garden, we used to stand behind him in the cheap seats and throw peanuts at him.
In those days, there were a lot of matinee games so we would go to the game, scream our lungs out, and then go home to see if we could hear ourselves on TV.
NFL - loved Jim Gordon's voice on radio "Muster... STOPPED"
NBA - loved Marv and John Andreise and loved Marv and Jim Karvellas on the radio. Can remember laying in bed at ages 6-8 with my yellow Sony Walkman on listening to Karvellas yell "Bullseye"
MLB - special place in my heart for Rizzuto and Bill White - brings back great memories of staying up late in the summer watching the games
NHL - loved JD and Sam Rosen - "It's a Power Play Goal!"
They have great stories. They talk about the fans in the stadium but don't let that get in the way of giving you good analysis of what is happening. They root for the Giants but always give an honest opinion of a call whether it is for the Giants or not.
I'm watching the Giants vs Rockies and am stuck with the Rockies announcers. They blow.
I don't care about basketball but I'll give it to Marv.
Summerall and Brookshire
Jiggs and Westfall, Gordon and the Big Whistle were great teams. Honorable mention to Tom Mees
Pleasant voice, doesn't talk BS. Loved him with Dave Jennings, another one without the BS. He knew all the rules. And Dick Lynch, the Giants answer to Phil Rizutto.
Yankees Rizutto, Messer & White were very very good. I hated White, the guy from the National league, for a long time. He was worse than Bob Murphy his first year or so. But by the time the Yankees started getting good, so did White. He was a great partner to Rizzuto, as was Fran Healey.
I like Sam Rosen, but I can understand why some don't. Another one without the BS. He worked well with Phil Esposito, JD & now with Joe Micheletti. I always understand what Rosen is talking about. Emerick uses his same tired phrases every game, sometimes several times. How many time does he say "ricochet " every game?
I started watching sports with the sound off when there were TOO MANY guys I couldn't stand doing games I watched. It's way less annoying and frustrating muted. I only un-mute to hear an explanation of a questionable call or an injury update or something.
Try it. Once you get used to it, you'll never want to go back. Then you won't have to pick 4 that suck a little less than the rest.

I listen to the games similar to you, but I mute just the color commentators, it makes the play by play guys not seem as bad. But when Al Michaels does the game, the sound is completely off. Thank god for the mute button, I'd hate to have to take the speakers out of my TV just to watch a game.

Forgot all about Chris Schenkel

The NFL experimented (I think it was NBC) with that for a Jets game once. No announcers but they did air the stadium announcer. I liked it but they never did it again so I guess not too many people did.
I'm sure that Vin Scully deserves every kudo he receives. But it's been so long since I've heard him call a game that I'm probably selecting him on reputation and longevity.
My announcing GOATs........
Baseball: Vin Scully

But I'd rather hear him calling a national game than the Rangers because he's such an MSG mouthpiece. Hearing him spouting the company line is irritating.
