NFT: Champions League Final

UConn4523 : 5/28/2016 4:28 pm
Anyone watching? Atletico just tied it at 1 all with a goal in the 80th minute.
Real Madrid have been average all season
giantBCP : 5/28/2016 4:37 pm : link
Whether under Benitez or Zidane. I tend to favor them over other Spanish teams, but I don't feel like they're deserving of the titl this year.
Atletico deserves this

We will be getting OT

Sergio Ramos was offsides
B in ALB : 5/28/2016 4:42 pm : link
On his goal. Shouldn't have counted.

On to extra time. AM looks to be the better more deserving side.
Great match
dpinzow : 5/28/2016 4:42 pm : link
Atletico is outplaying Real by quite a bit but Griezmann's missed penalty looms large as we head to extra time
Taking Kroos off for Isco
giantBCP : 5/28/2016 4:44 pm : link
Was just stupid. Isco is a decent player, but Kroos has been critical for their play IMO.
Carassco had the greatest goal celebration of all time

runs over to the stands and makes out with his GORGEOUS girlfriend.
Also I don't think Ronaldo is fit
nyjuggernaut2 : 5/28/2016 4:49 pm : link
I know Zidane said he's 100% now but he just doesn't have that killer pace today that we normally see.
Zidane hasn't had a great night

Looks like Zidane is paying for his stubbornness
giantBCP : 5/28/2016 4:59 pm : link
Leaving James on the bench in a game like this is silly.
Atletico look far stronger
dpinzow : 5/28/2016 5:07 pm : link
but they have to get that goal before it gets to penalties otherwise the odds become even again

You could even say it is advantage Real Madrid in penalties because Griezmann already missed one and they would have to give his penalty to someone else
But Real dominating the second half of extra time

and pressing for the winner
Penalties
dpinzow : 5/28/2016 5:28 pm : link
Keylor Navas (Real) has saved three of six penalties and caused another miss...so only two of six have beaten him
Lol Ronaldo with the shirt off
Kyle in NY : 5/28/2016 5:39 pm : link
He really hadn't done anything all match. Terps just threw his remote in disgust.

That's a shame though. Atletico beats 3 league champions to get there including Baca and Bayern. Real beats....Man City. Too bad.

Harsh on Juanfran
Go Terps : 5/28/2016 5:45 pm : link
He dominated Ronaldo all game.

Notice also that Ronaldo had to have the last penalty. I guess he didn't learn from the humiliation of Euro 2012.

Too bad. Atletico leaves this season without a trophy despite being arguably the best team in Europe.
Good

game. Not surprised it went to penalties. Some really good penalties were taken.

Leaving James on the bench wasn't silly at all. He hasn't been good this season. He was out of shape at the beginning of the year & when given a chance he didn't produce.

Lucas Vazquez & Isco have been much better. As a Madrid fan I had no problem with them coming on. I'd have done the same thing. Benzema wasn't offering anything in attack & doesn't play defense. Vazquez has made a ton of plays on Defense this year. He's a better passer & has much better pace.

It wasn't pretty, but they found a way to get it done. It was almost as good as the last two Giants Super Bowls. My heart was beating through my chest. Thought I was going to have to go to the hospital.

Can't wait to see what we do next year. Zidane has been phenomenal all year after taking over a team that was a complete mess. It should get even better with more experience & Zizou getting more players in the summer.
I don't know how Pepe
B in ALB : 5/28/2016 7:14 pm : link
survived that vicious shot to the face in ET. That was brutal. I'm surprised he didn't break his jaw or get knocked out cold. What a tough player he is.
B
Big Rick in FL : 5/28/2016 7:16 pm : link
He actually is a pretty tough player. He's taken & given quite a few beatings. That was embarrassing though. Both times. I really have no clue what he was doing.
Pepe is a punk
Go Terps : 5/28/2016 7:46 pm : link
I hope the Real fans realize what they have in Ramos. He isn't the best defense in the world but he has a knack in big matches.

Go Terps : 5/28/2016 7:52 pm : link
Ronaldo claims he had a vision that he would score the winning goal.

That scumbag should give his entire paycheck to Benzema, because he does all the work.
Why is he a scumbag?
Big Rick in FL : 5/28/2016 8:01 pm : link
You may dislike him for whatever reason, but he's certainly not a scumbag.
He absolutely is
Go Terps : 5/28/2016 8:06 pm : link
He has gotten pissed at teammates that scored goals he thought he should have scored. I've never seen anyone so selfish in any team sport.

Scumbag.
Lol
Big Rick in FL : 5/28/2016 8:09 pm : link
That's hilarious. Always very friendly to people who bother him during dinner, when he's out with his family etc etc. Donates millions of dollars to people from all walks of life, but him getting mad at a teammate makes him a scumbag. Yet I haven't heard any teammate or former teammate talk bad about him.
I don't care what he does off the pitch
Go Terps : 5/28/2016 8:13 pm : link
What he does on it is abhorrent.
You don't care what he does off of it
Big Rick in FL : 5/28/2016 8:18 pm : link
Because it doesn't fit your narrative.

I'd wager to guess most people's definition of scumbag is a bit different. To me OJ Simpson, Aaron Hernandez & Rae Carruth are scumbags. Heck I'd even say the same thing about Luis Suarez. Certainly wouldn't say it about Cristiano if I wasn't a Madrid fan. I'm sure most would agree that he's not a scumbag.
Luis Suarez would break his legs for his team to win
Go Terps : 5/28/2016 8:21 pm : link
I'll take one of him over ten Cristianos.
Lol lol
Big Rick in FL : 5/28/2016 8:24 pm : link
You don't think Cristiano would do the same? Most of his ex teammates say he wants to win more then anybody else & will do whatever it takes.

So the guy who gets mad at his teammate is worst then the guy who bites people on the pitch?! Bahahahahahahaha just stop. Did Cristiano fuck your wife?
Where are these quotes
Go Terps : 5/28/2016 8:32 pm : link
I've seen him get mad at Bale and Arbeloa for scoring goals. I've seen him not take a penalty in the Euro semifinal because he wanted to be the hero (and he pulled the same bullshit today and got lucky).

He wasn't fucking my wife because he was too busy getting blown by you.
Blowing him?
Big Rick in FL : 5/28/2016 8:46 pm : link
No not at all. Just speaking like a rational person. Sorry I'm not calling a an extremely generous person a scumbag.

Here's one from current Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti. Someone who probably knows a little more then you.
Quote:

"Ronaldo's a fantastic player," Ancelotti told Goal. "It was a pleasure to be his manager for two years. We had a fantastic relationship — not only as a player, but as a person. He's a really, really serious and professional player. He's focused every single day, every single match, every single training [session].

"The professionalism of Cristiano helps him to be at the top. He has spent a long time at the top and the reason is because he's really, really professional and — of course — really talented. But he supports his talent with really, really professional mood."

Rio Ferdinand
Quote:
“He’s an unbelievable physical specimen and he had an incredible talent right from his first season at United. He knew straight away that he wanted to be the best player in the world and he lived his whole life just to achieve that aim. We’d finish training and he’d go on to the other pitch with a bag of balls and work on his step-overs with weights on his legs."

Sir Alex Ferguson
Quote:
“When he was at United he had the greatest work ethic you could ask for, and that hasn’t changed.

"He’s a great kid and a really great footballer.”

“He’s got everything. He’s unbelievable in the air, he’s got two great feet, he’s lightning fast, brave as a lion – and don’t even get me started about his physique!"
“That is also a testament to his work ethic. You go to his house and he’s got a gym, bikes, hot and cold splash pools, the lot.

But Go Terps knows more then 2 of the greatest coaches ever.
.
Go Terps : 5/28/2016 8:54 pm : link
I'm not putting any weight in quotes from people that have a vested interest in having a good relationship with him.

I'll say it again: he had gotten upset with teammates when they have scored goals. He has led the league in shots attempted (and not by a little bit) for years.

No one questions his fitness or his desire to be considered an all time great player.

But anyone that thinks he isn't selfish (and that his selfishness doesn't hurt his team) is kidding themselves.
So your opinion
Big Rick in FL : 5/28/2016 9:00 pm : link
is more reliable then people who've worked with him who no longer have anything to do with him? They don't have any reason to lie about him.

Seems your opinion is far more biased then any other I've seen.

I'm going to celebrate my team winning the Champions League. Have a good night!
Not an opinion
Go Terps : 5/28/2016 9:02 pm : link
It is a fact that he had gotten upset with teammates when they have scored goals.

That is a fact, and I have never seen anything comparable in team sports.

I've trained with a ton of athletes from all sports. He's one of the nicest I've ever met. Guy is the ultimate competitor on the pitch, yea he gets mad at teammates at times. As do all top competitors. Don't worry about someone who doesn't know shit about the guy tossing childish insults over the computer.

Terps' obsession with Ronaldo is borderline mental health issue status. Dude's been hating on the best soccer player to ever to ever live, forever. Good to see some things never change.

BigBluePrestige : 5/28/2016 9:34 pm : link
Keep in mind, this is the same person who claimed David Diehl was doing an excellent job at RT the last two years of his career. Again, bordlerline mental health issue status.

Self-proclaimed know it all who servers up the verbal diarrhea and endless LULZ.
I have no problem
Big Rick in FL : 5/28/2016 9:35 pm : link
If he doesn't like him or wants to say he's arrogant or cocky. That's fine.

I just think calling him a scumbag is going quite a bit overboard.

Ronaldo is the best ever? Wow.

Here's the thing... I'm not a Barcelona fan. I hate Barcelona. But one of the two national teams I support (Spain) has made Ronaldo their bitch every time it's mattered.

I'm not obsessed with Ronaldo, but I will admit to being anal about people saying stupid shit like Ronaldo is the best player ever.

He's not even the best player to ever have the name Ronaldo.
I have to throw my 2 cents on this Ronaldo debate
Gmen1982 : 5/29/2016 10:41 am : link
first he is definitely top three on the planet. He is a competitor and a great guy off of the field.

MY problem with him is his work ethic on the field. When he loses the ball he seldom fights for it back. He play no defense and that hurts the team. He also is very for himself. He does not really celebrate other people's goals and is noticeably annoyed when it is not him. He is also overly critical when he doesn't get the ball no matter how hard it is for the player to get it to him.

Benzema quietly is the most valuable player on that team.
Atlètico Madrid

Aside from the missed penalty shot early in the opening minutes of the
second half, for me the match was decided in the first half. I know this is not going to be a popular or deemed reasonable opinion because of the kicks from the mark and its timing.

ARs miss offsides, not infrequently. When there is heavy traffic in the PA and many moving bodies crossing the AR's field of vision, it can be very difficult to get it right. But the missed call on Ramos' goal was huge. I don't know how the booth commentary missed it (I don't recall one mention, even a suggestion), but it was clear from the first replay that Ramos was in an offsides position at the moment of Bale's header chip. It should have been seen because the view from the touch line looked pretty clean, imo. If you're going to have goal line technology, why not also deploy it for the equally critical decisions that lead to key plays in the PA. Perhaps you limit it to one challenge per side, per half or per game?

The second critical factor was Atlètico's lethargic play for the first half hour. The midfield and and forwards were casual and sloppy, their success rate on passes about evenly distributed between connecting to teammates and with RM defenders. To me it was shockingly poor. AM was giving RM too many set pieces, and it cost them. Once Saùl moved forward a bit and more play was directed to Felipe Luis on the outside the team to settle more and actually controlled possession for the last 15 minutes.

I was rooting hard for Simeone's side, but it was not to be.

Pepe is a jerk for his simulation antics. You knew Clattenburg was mulling yellows but he held back, and a card and a PK should have been awarded when Pepe took down Carrasco late, but MC had a poor angle to see the grab and the takedown. Otherwise I thought he called the match fairly and was pretty good.
I was rooting hard.
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/29/2016 12:03 pm : link
for Athletico, but what a great match to watch. Luckily I had the Dish feed on the plane trip to LA - but it was a riveting match. The technical expertise of both teams. The passing. The timed runs.

Anyone who dislikes soccer should watch that match.

I just had somebody tell me it wasn't a good game & they are a soccer fan. I couldn't believe it. I was on the edge of my seat the entire game. There was great chances created, good shots, very good defense, gorgeous set pieces. I'm a Madrid fan so the way it ended was very similar to the Giants 2007 Super Bowl.
Well, I'd weigh in that the first 30 minutes
ColHowPepper : 5/29/2016 12:57 pm : link
were less than riveting, with imv RM dominating possession and AM playing poorly. But the match built steadily from that point on.

The sequence (late 2H, early 1st extra time?) when Oblak was trapped way off his line and well into the left of his PA, and any one of Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema, Modric or Marcelo could have gained possession and drilled it, was just crazy, the seconds crawled by before AM was able to clear. I think there were three AM defenders on Oblak's goal line as he scrambled to recover position.
