On Wednesday, August 1, 2007, the Interstate 35W Mississippi River Bridge in Minneapolis, collapsed into the Mississippi River around 6:05pm CDT.
I typed all that. Anyone remember this? I can't even htink of how it would be to see something like that....emotonal

No, those two are mutually exclusive but undeniably true.
Joey, so true
Interestingly enough, that span was very similar in design to the Whitestone bridge. They ended up adding large steel trusses to the Whitestone bridge in response to the Tacoma Narrows collapse... ironically the extra weight probably caused significant strain on the cables and was removed about 10 years ago.
RIP Route 72.
Now, according to court testimony in a federal terrorism trial, Roble - one of the 145 people injured in the Minneapolis bridge collapse that killed 13 people - is believed to be in Syria with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS.

I'm sure he'll be given another 6 months to pollute BBI with complete nonsense.

in bridge collapses, there is some wild video available of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge going down in 1940. You can see the span acting like a wave.

If I remember correctly the Tacoma Narrows collapse was precipitated by steel panels in the side of the bridge that did not allow winds to travel through the structure. I might be mistaken, but I believe that this design flaw was the reason for the collapse..

Galloping Gerty was the nick name. The bridge had a solid roadway which allowed the wind to sail it until it collapsed.

Al that Tacoma narrows bridge collapse is a very, very famous one that was used as recently as when I was a HS sophomore in physics class as an example of harmonic motion, 45 years ago...
Isn't oscillation an example of resonance?
Quote:
it is now thought that the textbook explanation concerning resonance was incorrect for this bridge and the collapse was caused by "wind-driven amplification of the torsional oscillation".
Isn't oscillation an example of resonance?
I've seen some great graphic representations of resonance - oscillation building on itself - in tidal wave simulators.
Isn't it great when the kids forsake Disney false comedic drama for an afternoon and go Nat Geo or Science?
But don't worry, with 60,000 structurally deficient bridges and tunnels in the US, we will get some more collapses real soon.
