It seem to be a dying tradition. I remember as a kid(60s-70s)it seemed everyone had a flag in front of their house on Memorial Day. No this is not political just an observation of a old tradition. Maybe it's different in your neighborhoods?
Had my flag out this weekend. I didn't realize it's now OK to leave it out in all weather, which is why I don't have it out every day -just need to get a light for night time.
my dad still does and has for as long as I can remember.
I did go out to Riverside National Cemetery over the weekend to see where my great grandfather is since I'd never been out there. All the flags were placed around the entire cemetery. Really heart wrenching being there this weekend.
I am one of only two people on my block to ever fly a flag. Street is full of immigrants from all over the world, you'd think they would show a little respect the country they now call home. Nope.

Goddamn immigrants! They should show their appreciation! 'Merica!!!

My experience is that many immigrants tend to be more patriotic (= grateful for what this country offers them) than those of us who take it for granted.

Actually my wife is an immigrant and its America and yes immigrants should acknowledge their new country on memorial day in particular.

Perhaps they visited the VA hospital or came out to the local ceremony that was held to honor local vets but it would be nice to fly an american Flag to remember the tens of thousands who died for America. displaying a falg on select holidays, memorial day in particualr, is however a nice custom. I hope one that would be part of the thier assimilation into American culture. Apparently you're not a fan of flag flying, good for you Ric.

That's awfully impressive you were able to determine that about me from my belief that flying a flag isn't the only way to honor memorial day.
Confederate battle flag flying next to a don't tread on me flag. I pointed out the irony to my grandson.
And I agree that flying the flag doesn't mean much by itself. I'm sure there are many who have flags flying who support the candidate that advocates for religious discrimination.

Meh...flying a flag or not flying a flag...does it matter? I doubt that immigrants not flying the American flag on Memorial Day says anything about their patriotism or their appreciation of this nation. Immigrants come to this nation of opportunity to start a new life and for the most part are grateful. You seem to put a lot of stock on symbolism.

Actually, I flew the Mexican flag to honor our new overlords.

I served my country, volunteer, and the work that I do helps keep our country safe. I have never been one of those in your face "rah rah" kind of guys. I guess I don't see the "perceived need" to fly one.
don't volunteer much except for youth sports and do nothing to make my country safer (other than pay taxes). I like flying the flag to show love of country and recognize of those who did serve. That said, you're post is stupid.
Bill L, I'm guessing around 1 in 10 in our neighborhood fly the flag.

I would try to keep quiet too if I was an air winger as well.
Me too......every single day......I suppose being in the service for 30 years instills that in you.

this is sometimes up instead of the traditional stars and stripes:

And the Pinko List flies proudly below it.

Heaven forfend!
How do you get a wood frame attached to the rope?

Something you should be doing more of, fatty.
I have a flag displayed in the front next to the door every day of the year.
I also have a flag in my office at work.
Can't imagine not having one or both of them.
You're safe...you're not an immigrant, so you get a pass.
