NFT: How many people still put the Flag out today?

Shadow : 5/30/2016 11:19 am
It seem to be a dying tradition. I remember as a kid(60s-70s)it seemed everyone had a flag in front of their house on Memorial Day. No this is not political just an observation of a old tradition. Maybe it's different in your neighborhoods?

Mine is out everyday of the year and I'd say the overwhelming majority in my neighborhood are as well. I don't think it's a dying tradition. At least I hope not.

in my neighborhood. Almost every single house has a flag every single day. Not sure where you get it is a dying tradition.

On Memorial the VFW has this thing now where they'll put flags out at the street for you there is stand they "install" in the ground and will come around a few days before Memorial Day and put small flag poles in the stands. it's a small donation.

Half my neighborhood has those specifically for Memorial Day, some houses have multiple of those. they look cool and the donation goes to a good cause.

put out a small flag on holidays. However, we must be living near heathens where they don't give a rat's ass about a flag. Very sad.

light at night yes, no to bringing it in for weather, with all weather flags it's not etiquette to bring it in in inclement weather.

I have a flag that I fly nearly all of the time and...

Yeah, it's lit a night. I don't bring it in in the rain. Just if there are heavy winds.

Not one in my neighborhood (myself included). I did see one on a boat (was on the St Croix today) and one on almost any motorcycle that I saw.

My job (honor) growing up was to put the flag out on holidays at my parents' house in Hamilton Square NJ
Had both of mine out all weekend.

On my street of abt 30 homes I'd guess less than 10 have a flag out today. And they are the same houses that have flags out most of the year weather permitting.

Have to say, I'd like to purchase and leave flags, hangers and poles at every house on the block. And in a few years when I've fully maturated to grumpy old man status I'll do that.
I have one flying at our home every single day.

Had my flag out this weekend. I didn't realize it's now OK to leave it out in all weather, which is why I don't have it out every day -just need to get a light for night time.

I don't own one to put out.

I did go out to Riverside National Cemetery over the weekend to see where my great grandfather is since I'd never been out there. All the flags were placed around the entire cemetery. Really heart wrenching being there this weekend.

the only change I make
pjcas18 : 5/31/2016 8:47 am : link
is occasionally I'll fly the 13-star Colonial Flag, and if I had a Don't Tread on Me flag I'd fly that one on special occasions too.

this is sometimes up instead of the traditional stars and stripes:

My experience is that many immigrants tend to be more patriotic (= grateful for what this country offers them) than those of us who take it for granted.

Perhaps they visited the VA hospital or came out to the local ceremony that was held to honor local vets but it would be nice to fly an american Flag to remember the tens of thousands who died for America. displaying a falg on select holidays, memorial day in particualr, is however a nice custom. I hope one that would be part of the thier assimilation into American culture. Apparently you're not a fan of flag flying, good for you Ric.

That's awfully impressive you were able to determine that about me from my belief that flying a flag isn't the only way to honor memorial day.
I went by a house that had the

And I agree that flying the flag doesn't mean much by itself. I'm sure there are many who have flags flying who support the candidate that advocates for religious discrimination.

Meh...flying a flag or not flying a flag...does it matter? I doubt that immigrants not flying the American flag on Memorial Day says anything about their patriotism or their appreciation of this nation. Immigrants come to this nation of opportunity to start a new life and for the most part are grateful. You seem to put a lot of stock on symbolism.
