NFT: Odd Stat I found while looking at the Mets

mrvax : 5/30/2016 6:05 pm
I stopped watching MLB back in 1994 when the players went on strike. Recently I started to look at the NY Mets a little bit as I was a fan since childhood.

Looking at MLB stats, (http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/team/_/stat/pitching/sort/ERA/order/false) it shows the Mets rank 3rd best ERA in all of MLB. OK, I knew their pitching was very good.

Then I sorted the same list using BAA (opponents batting average) thinking the Mets would be 1-5th best.

I was very surprised to see that the Mets came in at 16th best while the NY Yankees came in with a respectable 11th place.

WTH? Does this mean the Mets pitchers allow more runners to get on base but somehow they excel in not allowing them bastids to score?

Thanks!
the hits

that come against Yankee pitchers are more damaging (more hr allowed, more extra basehits etc..) The Mets allow more batted balls to turn into hits in general but the hits are weaker. And Mets pitchers are able to get out of innings where guys get on base more often. The balls that are put in play are hits more often against the Mets due to either worse fielding, luck, both. But the runners score less often because they aren't driven in as often,
Should say

when balls are put in play they tend to be hits more often against teh Mets. Not that the Mets give up more hits.
Mets pitchers have allowed the fewest HR and fewest walks in the NL

That's why their ERA is so low. They throw strikes, which might lead to a few more hits but which ultimately leads to fewer runs.
