Raanan has several tweets indicating Thompson is locking in on the starting job for FS.
He's running with the first team, the coaches seem impressed, and Raanan indicated his biggest surprise thus far has been Thompson's success.
This seems like good news...
Thompson again complimented by Mac, as he shows situational sense by taking a knee after picking off Eli with 50 seconds left on clock in 2 minute drill.
Kid is making a push to start as a rookie, ya gotta love that he seems to have vet savvy already. He's playing mostly with the 1s. Interesting that mini-CB also out of Boise State is making noise too and pushing for training camp reps with the big boys. Someone is doing a very nice job coaching DBs over there at Boise State.
I thought no way with Deayon at his size, but it's not like there is a clear 4th CB on this roster. I think DD also returns punts pretty well too, so that gives him another leg up on a roster spot...
Older stuff on Giants.com includes a Marshall Newhouse video. He gets peppered with a few straight tough questions about being replaced, and is he capable as NFL starter, and he handles them pretty well. Admits to having a lot of technique issues, and says Coach Solari is first and foremost a teacher. He doesn't get offended by the questions, or too defensive, but at some point, asked about his ability to play in the NFL, he says " this is my seventh year in the league. I must be fooling somebody pretty well..."
Not a bad line...
I still can't root for the guy to start, but I understand why Pugh and Richburg are sticking up for him as a person.

Tuckrule the thread title says "likely" and pretty clear that means speculative opinion. Your beef with it is unfounded.
"Likely" = official?
"Likely" = official?
Maybe just re-title the thread to something like, "My unfounded speculation is that Darian Thompson will be the starting FS"?

I lol'd.
Thanks...I thought Behre had a shot...

This was my thought as well. The topic is just fine. I clicked on it thinking I would read an argument to show why he "should" be the starter. Nothing more.
So obviously declaring the guy a likely starter is a bit of a projection at this point.
That said, McAdoo also said: "Guys are jockeying for reps right now for when we get to training camp and for when we get to the preseason games"
Which means these early successes are far from meaningless. Take advantage of your reps now and you have a leg up coming into camp and preseason. There are a lot of guys competing for the spots at safety and you would not want to fall behind. There are only so many reps to go around. Thompson is clearly catching the coaches eyes -others may want to take note.
As an aside, Thompson was one of my least favorite draft picks when it was made. But that's why you have to get 'em into camp and see what you have. Sounds like we may have a good one here. As we stand now, he's one of the guys I'm most excited to see in camp.
I know it is only OTAs but he is doing what he did in college again the pros. shorts or not, he is covering. Pads are for tackling. You don't need pads to show balls skills, awareness, hands, time management.
also, I haven't heard coaches rave about anyone else thus far.
The one thing that will need to change is when coming downhill. He goes full throttle when at times he needs to pace and square up. That I believe can and will be corrected with coaching. Either way he's still our best shot at FS and will be a big improvement from lat year imo.
Thanks...I thought Behre had a shot...

Does Berhe have the skill set to,play FS?
He seems more like a SS.

From what I have seen or read Berhe does not have the skill set to be a starting free safety. He is a leader, hard worker, sure tackler, but very simply not a great center fielder nor do I think he can technique tight ends, backs or wide receivers.
Even though their measureables are similar, Thompson is absolutely a natural ball hawking instinctual free safety..at least he was in college where he was pretty much the best in the country, Berhe has never been a big interception or passes defensed player. I think Berhe would make a fine back up strong safety or hope he will but I don't even want him looked at at Free safety. All we fucking need is another free safety who cant cover. Very simply to me Free safeties should be much closer to cornerbacks,Thompson, thompson or bennet and cut fucking cooper taylor or at best..at best put him as the 5th or 6th safety and #3 depth chart strong safety. He should never..ever be relied on to play. I'm shocked he is still here. He can't make more than 2 plays without getting an injury.
Or it's quite possible, Spags throws him to the wolves like he did with Collins last year.....if Reese does not pick up a castoff, you play with who does the job best.....but that does not mean the position is filled.....
We have no idea what Thompson can do, until he gets out there and sees some real competition in preseason....he was the 8th safety chosen in the draft, and is just expected to fill the position? Who knows? Maybe he is a perfect fit for this defense...
You need to lighten up dude.
i think the more interesting debate is, minus politics, who the starter at SS would be. (Collins or Berhe.)
i was unimpressed with collins last year althou it sounds like he's improved
Did you think the other FS options are 5-year All-Pros...

Do you think you just answered the question or raised new ones? Is he so awesome or is the competition so poor a 3rd Rounder can step in and be the front runner during non-contact drills against a vanilla offense run during OTAs?
If we had B. Jackson and N. Behre starting at safety last year and Prince healthy all year too we'd have made the playoffs. Our secondary was so bad due to injuries.
I rag on Reese/Ross a lot but this draft group looks pretty freaking good.
Sinorice Moss was awesome but let's not nitpick.
Quote:
Obviously, there are mitigating factors to him actually starting. The whole point of this thread is that he's doing well thus far and is a favorite to start (thus far) according to a major beat writer (Raanan). But please continue to nitpick phantom points that no one is making...

You got me, man. Well done. You totally nailed me on that one.

I'll be honest: would anyone be shocked if Behre won the starting "in the box" SS job over L. Collins?

It's not happening, so yes, I would be completely shocked if that happened.
Same. Its as if people read something on BBI or wherever, convince themselves of whatever it is, and then just stick to it. Collins has warts but if he's going to be a SS he's not only got a whole season under his belt, but he was healthy and led the team in tackles. Behre may flash but he won't be earning the starting SS gig this offseason. He'd only get it through an injury.

Spend a few minutes and look at the depth chart at FS and you will realize I did answer your question.
Cooper Taylor is hurt again and has barely played when he was healthy. And the other two players, Jackson and M. Thompson were even later draft picks than Darian Thompson and also have not played in an NFL game.
So...
And no, Collins isn't going to not win the SS spot.
He certainly doesn't carry himself lik a rookie. Inst ad of hearing the same old "catching up with the speed of the game" matras we hear every spring this kid is calling out thmy D at his first veteran OTA. Simply put, he's obviously not overwhelmed by the stage. Tempering my enthusiasm but this kid really might have The Goods from week 1.
I rag on Reese/Ross a lot but this draft group looks pretty freaking good.
Impossible not to be excited about this draft class. Every one of them.
He damn sure has confidence so far so good !
I am amped for this Defense I really think were gonna turn some heads this year ..
This could be Jerry's Best Re-tool Job to Date ..
Rookie Darian Thompson eyes starting job - ( New Window )
Nat Behre unseat Collins ..
Tuckrule I doubt that anyone in America has Thompson starting but he is damn sure off to a good start so its Early June we are all football starved all members want to contribute yet there are plenty of GUYS on here that know a lot more than others , Most of whom respect other posters even if they are way off base .
Eric has put together the Best Giants site known to man try enjoying it .

Do you remember Gibril Wilson? He was a 5th round pick that started the seven out of eight games he played as a rookie before he got hurt, and then went on to start in every game he appeared for the Giants for the next three years.
Ever hear of Morgan Burnett? He was a 3rd round pick for Green Bay back in 2010, #71 overall, just like Thompson, and a starter from day one. Ever hear of T.J. MacDonald? He was a 3rd round pick for the Rams back in 2013, #71 overall, just like Thompson, and a starter from day one.
D. Thompson, the 6th Safety chosen in the 2016 draft, not the 8th, wasn't drafted by the Giants to sit behind Nat Berhe or anyone else on the roster, and to suggest that he'll be the starting FS come September is a pretty safe bet, in my opinion. In fact, I'd go so far to say that it's "quite possible."
Collins starts over Berhe because of "politics"?? Really Doomster? What the fuck are you watching?
Delete this, Tuckrule? One, neither the OP nor Ranaan said anything was official, just that DT is impressive and zeroing in on the spot. And this thread should be deleted after all the nonsense here about playoffs, the greatness of John Jerry and all the countless other drivel the gets posted here?
Percy Ellsworth II?
SORRY Doomster!!! that should have been directed to "area junc", the thread above yours. Apologies!
Area Junk said ... So yeah I thought you felt like
NB had a shot of bumping Collins hey I could be wrong but
IMHO Collins is a Lock at SS and will be better with the
addition of Snacks and Hank being back and hopefully
Thompson is the goods at FS ..
So My Bad

That 71st pick thing is some Davinci Code stuff right there... Every 3 years, 2010, 2013, 2016....
Reese has finally figured out the code.
the 4th Rd., to have Collins sit behind a 5th rounder in Berhe. Please stop the nonsense. If Thompson winds up starting
at FS, that's fine if it happens, lets slow that roll for now.
