OTA Thoughts and Ruminations as Mini Camp Approaches

gidiefor : Mod : 6/12/2016 10:31 am
Compilation of NJAdvance Media Staff Thoughts (warning for those who are squeamish - Slide Show format)

Condensed Highlights (there are more details, video, pictures, and rationales for these "ruminations" in the slide show:

1 - Nat Behre has the strongest chance to become starting safety with Darian Thompson nipping at his heals

2 There's hope for Andre Williams - he looks quicker and more fluid and has been catching the ball well.

3 There should be cautious optimism about the Linebackers

4 There should be depth concerns about the pass rush behind the presumptive starters

4 Sterling Sheppard passes the eye test and should be a major contributor starting in week 1

5 The UDFA WRs have their work cut out for them -- very unlikely that Beckham, Cruz, Sheppard, Harris, Davis and White won't make the team

6 The Starting Offensive Line is unlikely to change from - Flowers, Pugh, Richburg, Jerry, Newhouse

7 Don't write off BJ Daniels -- This is not Coughlin's team anymore and McAdoo may well go with 3 QBs

8 Anything could happen at TE - there are six viable candidates with different strengths - LaCosse is the most well rounded candidate

9 Donte Deayon has been the biggest surprise and has a shot

Short of 20+ on IR this team has serious potential. Of course, short of 20+ on IR the last few years this team would have had good potential. Reese did a tremendous job acquiring talent this offseason. That and the return of JPP, Hankins, Kennard, maybe Cruz and they could be really fun to watch. Let's hope.
Davis looked good last Spring then disappeared

I think Davis and White are both on the fence.
We'll have some kind idea

Lewis or King

will knock off White. They'll probably stash the French guy.

Marshaun Coprich will bump someone if he gets the chance.

I'll start paying attention to your guy Coprich once the hitting starts..Looking forward to it
I wouldn't think White is a lock.

At this point there appears to be good depth at WR, one or two of the rookies (other than Shepherd) could make the team. Might carry 7 WRs if they prove special team worthy.
I thought Behre

of the UDFA WRs will make the roster, probably Lewis, and probably at the expense of White. I don’t see us carrying seven WRs, or three QBs. Daniels can be stashed on the PS.
What has Nat Berhe
est1986 : 6/12/2016 1:32 pm : link
Ever done on the field to make me feel like he will be a good player?? No way an injury prone, basically third year rookie safety has a better chance of starting over D Thompson. His college production speaks to exactly what we need at the FS position, a playmaker and he's took on the vocal role early on, come on.
In the era of three and 4 WR sets
xman : 6/12/2016 1:38 pm : link
it makes sense to carry 7 WR especially if they double as special team players. Injuries happen to WR and you don't want to be handcuffed in WR sets

The only issue with the French player and stashing him is that he is old so they may decide to go with a younger player.
If Berhe is considered #1 for FS, this team is in trouble...
Doomster : 6/12/2016 1:58 pm : link
I seriously doubt we carry 3 qb's....

Williams has to show it against competition, not just in OTA's....

Our main concern, is the same one we have had the last 4 seasons, injuries.....we need a break, no pun intended....

Before his injury Behre actually had a good rookie year. Media felt he should have been given a chance to start. He was great on special teams and practiced with the first team. Stevie Brown was so bad that he got pulled for Behre. But instead of allowing Behre an opportunity to start, Perry went with Demps. That's on coaches. I don't know what a young player could do at that point. Even Coughlin admitted at the 2015 OTAs that Behre should have been given a shot to start.
The WR comment bothers me
Coach Mason : 6/12/2016 2:33 pm : link
And is similar to last year when they went with the 'continuity' guy over the newcomer.

If we had James Jones instead of Parker there is a legit chance we win 2 or 3 of those close games in the first half of the season. Instead we kept Parker (which seemed purely for the sake of continuity) as it was pretty darn clear Jones was the more talented player.

Miles White from all accounts Ive seen does not have nearly as high a ceiling as a couple of these UDFAs especially Roger Lewis.

I can see keeping Davis with the strides he has made in OTAs but not White.

Looking at whatever I could find on the FA wide receivers, that's my best guess too. I also think they'll give Dable a chance to return KOs, and if he's good enough at the NFL as a KR, he might even make the 53. I don't think the staff would be adverse to limiting Harris to PR and gunner duty only on STs.
I hope not Lou. I want Harris touching

as many punts and kickoffs as possible. It was nice actually having a threat back there last season after being a joke for so many seasons on Special Teams.

He came thru in a couple of games big-time last season on returns.
White was targeted on 20 plays last season
Ten Ton Hammer : 6/12/2016 3:55 pm : link
So nobody here would really know anything about his talent level quite yet. How could we. He barely played.

is there any difference from what Cruz has been doing on the side?

Is he not taking snaps out of fear that someone might bump or fall on the knee?

The Giants are not going to cut Williams going into his 3rd year as a former 4th round pick.

Behre should start the season with the 1st team on obvious run support downs.

The one I am not so sure about is White, the Giants need another deep threat to go along with OBJ and Lewis is a guy that gets on top of DBs in a hurry and makes plays down the field. Lewis > White is a real possibility.
LaCosse is so well rounded that he was cut last year due to injury

Cut so he could receive an injury settlement and then be free to sign with another team, which is what happened when he was picked up by the Jets. Unfortunately, he was still not fully recovered from his hamstring injury and was cut by the Jets in camp. Now he's back and he's having another good spring. If he can avoid the injury bug, I'd say his chances of making the team are pretty good.

We all see Lewis's potential, but he has to get deep enough into the playbook to replace White, who has a few years of experience on him. It's encouraging he's getting pushed by Eli and OBJ both. So they must see something in him.

Robbieballs I don't think Dable's age would preempt him going to the PS. The FO knew his age when they signed him, and also knew he'd likely be a 2 year project, no?
Myles White caught 7 balls last year
UberAlias : 6/13/2016 12:16 pm : link
None of the receivers had any production after ODB and Randle. Harris had a little, but he's more of a 4th or 5th and special teamer. If they can't do better than Myles White on the roster, we had better hope the backs and TEs pick it up.

I would be very surprised if he is even working with the Deep Safety group. I believe he will be placed in the Box Safety group.

And don't kid yourself. Even if he remains at DS, if it is a close competition, Thompson is going to be declared the winner and starter even if he is not the winner at that moment in time.

And based on potential, this is as it should be.
