DT Johnathan Hankins

Q: Do you think you can drive [Snacks] and can he help to drive you?

A: Yeah, definitely. He played the run as best as anybody in the league. He is probably the best at playing the run in the league, so just getting small tips from him will be helpful for me. Now that he is playing nose and I get the chance to play nose, so it is another guy that I can look up to and do some work with.

Q: How different is the feel of practice now?

A: I like it. I like the vibe. It kind of keeps you going. The music is always entertaining. We’ve got a great DJ.

Q: What is going on behind the scenes that is really different now under Ben McAdoo?

A: I don’t really think there is much behind the scenes that is really different. Everything, I feel to me, is sort of the same. It is really just the music. Coach Ben is a great coach, and just being on the offensive side, right now he is just letting us go out there and play and compete.

Q: Did you recognize the voice on the loudspeaker at the end of practice?

A: I didn’t know who that was. I just thought that was a computer or something. That is why I have to pay attention a little more.

Q: Are you going to have any limitations during training camp?

A: I don’t think so, unless they tell me something different.

Q: Do you feel like you need any?

A: I feel like I am full go and ready to get started, but I am just listening to them and taking their advice.

Q: Did it sort of take you a while to get into football shape?

A: Getting there, I was a little rusty. I didn’t get on the field for a while, and getting my footwork back to how it used to be, so that is still an ongoing process, but Coach Pat (Graham) and Coach Z (Zgonina) have been helping me a lot.

Q: Do you feel like the defense is flying around a little faster than last season?

A: I think it is a different vibe. We have a lot of new faces, new attitude, new feel, new coach and a new beginning, so I feel like we have a lot of good guys on defense and offense. I feel like we have a really good shot at it this year.

Q: It is year two is Spags’ system. Is that a reason that you are able to practice faster?

A: Everybody that was there last year is kind of getting it down. It is just a couple news faces, a couple new changes that we have to correct.

Q: Is it hard for a young player like you to get used to the changes?

A: For me, I don’t think there are too many changes. It is my fourth year; I think I have the defense down pat.

Q: I’m talking about the new personnel.

A: It is different but that is how the NFL works. There is always a different turnaround going on. The guys that we brought in are really good, so it is just nice to have more beast guys out there.

Q: What is your excitement level for this defensive line?

A: Sometimes I don’t even like thinking about it or talking about it because I don’t want to jinx anything, but like everyone says, it looks good on paper, but we need to see what we do on the field.

Q: Do you think it looks decent on the field so far?

A: I think we look pretty good. We haven’t hit anybody or put the pads on yet, so when that time comes, I’m sure everyone will see.

Q: Do you expect to be able to rush the passer more now with Snacks next to you?

A: Well, the way it is looking now, I think I will be able to because I think he will always be the nose and I will always be the three, so take some of the double-teams off of me and keep the eyes on him.

Q: Is that something you are looking forward to?

A: Yeah, I am excited for it. To have him and OV out there on the other side, so I think we will all have a chance to get some one-on-ones out there when it presents itself.

Q: How much did you play the three at all?

A: I played it a good amount, but a little bit more this year. I think I will be mostly playing the three because we have big Snacks. I’m not saying that he can’t play the three, but we know what he is good at.

Q: Will the D come in with a little bit of chip on their shoulder to re-establish what the traditional Giants defense is all about?

A: Yeah, I think we will. The last three years we haven’t lived up to the Giants standard. We have been last in stopping the run and the last few minutes of the game, we haven’t been dominating, so that is what we have really been focusing on getting right for this year.
