Personally sounds like a good idea to me, especially with Pugh prepped to backup LT. Don't think the Giants agree with the assessment though. Would love to get some honest feedback from Solari on his first impressions with Flowers et al.

Seriously JR should've renegotiated with Beatty and moved Flowers to RT. I hate the Beatty hate. Beatty handled the situation bad too but ...

Giants would have been crazy to assume the deal he had......If the hold up was a renegotiated contract with the Giants, why would he come here now? He has the Giants offer for a baseline and will shop himself around.....but an even bigger question is, what were the injuries that he lost playing time from....he is also 29.....

2015:Concussion took him out for 4 weeks, Shoulder surgery in week 11 requiring injured reserve

2014: a 5-game knee injury, and an ankle injury late in 2014 as well

Poor logic. If He gets hurt after 8 games I'd rather have him for 8 and Newhouse for 8 than Newhouse for 16
Who cares if he has an injury history?
Big Rick in FL : 6/15/2016 5:48 pm : link
If we sign him it will be with a contract that doesn't effect us long term. So if he gets hurt we are at the same place we are today & if he doesn't we have a massive upgrade on the OL. There aren't any better options out there.
At worst he's a good backup OT.
yatqb : 6/15/2016 5:54 pm : link
At best he beats out either Flowers at LT and Flowers is moved to RT (not likely, imo) or beats out Newhouse at RT, and we have Newhouse to back up both OT positions, which he was brought here for originally.

Hoping we land him...he's gotta be better than Stingily and the other dreck we have at OT currently.

At this stage
Peppers : 6/15/2016 5:55 pm : link
There isn't going to be a better option to upgrade the OL. Now's not the time to be picky, we should be all over this.
I wonder if the various

Forget him only being better then Stingily. The minute he's signed he's the best OT on our roster. Obviously Flowers should be improved from last year, but Monroe is a damn good OT.

ThatLimerickGuy : 6/15/2016 6:21 pm : link

I checked in on this with my source and he said there is interest and that the issue will be $$$. Monroe thinks he is an all pro and should be paid as one and the Giants see him as much closer to a guy who needs to take a short 1 or 2 year deal with little guaranteed.

Then again this same source told me that the Giants were going to take Myles Jack at 10 because his knee checked out so take it with a grain of salt.

Rick, that's likely true. But I don't think the team is going to move Flowers to RT, and if not we won't fully utilize Monroe's talent...'cause he's a LT.
It would be good to have options
phil in arizona : 6/15/2016 6:30 pm : link
It would allow Pugh to stay at LG if Flowers goes down or he doesn't progress as we'd like.

I'd be slightly pissed if Beatty has a better season.
He has to demonstrate that he's anywhere near the player he was

Flowers is not moving to RT
ZogZerg : 6/15/2016 6:39 pm : link
NoT a chance.
There is nothing wrong with moving Flowers to RT for a year or two
Vanzetti : 6/15/2016 6:48 pm : link
I understand why the Giants did not want to sign a LT like Penn or Okung to a longterm contract.

But Monroe presumably will get a 1 or 2 year deal. Or a longer deal that allows him to be released after 2 years without huge cap implications.

A lot of LTs started out playing RT. I think Pettigout did that on the Giants. Diehl was a guard before moving to LT.

Well, if that is the case then I think management fucked up because we had 2 better LT players that were supposedly being asked to move to RT so we can keep Flowers at LT. If we change that now it means they messed up.
He was PFF

23rd rated OT last year. An article I read said he would have been higher if he played more games.

For comparison Flowers was rated as their 65th OT & Newhouse was their 71st ranked OT.
Wild-ass guess:
Enoch : 6/15/2016 8:01 pm : link
It's possible that Monroe declined any and all contract re-negotiation offers from NYG because he didn't want to go to a team where he'd have to compete to start at his position of choice.
Monroe has more ability than our current roster options...

The OL depth either replacing Newhouse or as a backup swing tackle. But let's not fool ourselves into thinking he is part of the long term solution. I've resigned myself to the fact Newhouse and Jerry will be the right side of the line and just hope we can make some more improvements next off season
A walking injury.

Jimmy Googs : 6/15/2016 8:49 pm : link
but we have a weakness on that right side. I really can't imagine its a fatal weakness, meaning Giants cannot deal with it, but is it worth "waiting and seeing?"...

antdog24 : 6/15/2016 8:49 pm : link
he is going to sign with the first team that will start him at LT. I'm betting he doesn't want to change positions.

The OP says the trade fell through. Why does everyone assume the Giants offered something and the Ravens turned them down. Maybe the Ravens offered and nobody responded, so they released him.

Over Marshall Newhouse? Yes.
He has never played RT. He has missed 16 of 32 games. If he comes in he is your Left Tackle and flowers goes to right tackle.

Wrong. Remember the NFL randomly tests for Marijuana and don't you think that he will be on their radar based on his stance?

He can live anywhere he wants in the off-season if he wants like every other player does.

This myth that broncos and Seahawks can smoke weed without facing NFL discipline isnt true.

I agree with this. I don't see the downside if he's signed to a team friendly deal (he would be). He's better than Newhouse and if he gets hurt the Giants are in the same position they're in now.

I wouldn't have gone out of my way to mention PFF but, since you did, the statement re Flowers is not accurate. PFF had him ranked dead last (76th).

"Dud: . . . Ereck Flowers didn’t provide the immediate upgrade the [Giants] had hoped for, and was our lowest-graded tackle on the year."

and still want to sign him. even if he's not an upgrade as a starter, our depth is extremely thin.

if they view him as a backup, the still may badly want him, but if someone offers him a starters job and/or starter money, he'll probably go there.

If the Giants sign him he'll make more money than Newhouse. Is that starter money?

Doesn't make sense.

We let Beatty go because he was oft injured and didn't want to move to RT.

We passed or lost out on younger players with out a significant injury history because we didn't want move Flowers to RT.

So to move Flowers to RT now? Hope not.

At least Monroe actually wants to play football and actually did last year.
The relevant question to ask is not whether
Ash_3 : 6/16/2016 3:13 am : link
he's good or comes with flaws. The answer to the latter is "of course, otherwise he wouldn't have been released."

The question is would he be a cost-friendly improvement over Newhouse (even if they're not playing the same position, if you're bumping Flowers over).

I suspect the answer is yes.
The assumption is that
grizz299 : 6/16/2016 3:42 am : link
He's better than Newhouse because he's better. That bit of somplistic doggerel might not be so.

David Diehl, Ohara and Suey were not great players, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts and continuity can't be underestimated when you're talking about an offensive line. The more talented guy who is new might not be as effective.
Balt. is a "win now" team with a top QB and Front office. You don't let a rare commodity like a good OLT go for no reason....see Will Beatty.
Why does everyone need the "starter" label?
UConn4523 : 6/16/2016 8:01 am : link
We can do whatever we want with him if he signs here. If he makes more than Newhouse but isn't healthy or can't beat him out in camp, then he's the backup.

You do what makes the football team better.

If this OL has a higher ceiling with Monroe at LT and Flowers sliding over to RT and the price for Monroe winds up being reasonable, you do it.
