Maybe the Ravens wanted to high of a draft pick. It's better this way. Eugene collects whatever dead money he had on his contract. We can renegotiate a salary and if needed out bid for him. Also, we don't give away a draft pick.
The biggest question is his health. That's a lot of missed games for the past two years. If he's healthy, there's no doubt he's better than Newhouse because....well, frankly, he couldn't be worse.
Monroe is also a local product and will be a nice veteran on a young O-Line.

Eugene already collected the "dead money", that's why it's dead money.
for the next two years (if any exists) also count as dead money? For instance if Miami cuts Suh I dont think the only dead money on their cap would be the signing bonus, rather I am pretty sure the guaranteed salary for this year and next would be "dead money" that they have to pay him.
So he has apparently miissed half his games due to injury, but what I cannot find is how he performed when healthy and the nature of the injuries. An OL with certain injuries could be of little value.
Eugene Christopher Monroe (born April 18, 1987) is an American football offensive tackle who is currently a member of the New York Giants . He was selected eighth overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2009 NFL Draft. He played college football at Virginia.
Flowers-Pugh-Richburg-Hart-Monroe?.. I could dig that
Unfortunately Hart has been playing strictly RT all spring not RG meaning John Jerry is still projected to start
I don't know why "unfortunately". Maybe you should write that "he unfortunately is not better than Jerry and therefore can't supplant him". Why would anyone want to put a lesser player in simply because they don't like the one that is currently the better talented in the coaches' eyes?
Is the total number of games missed by Monroe in his career. In 6 seasons, that's two and a half a year.
13.5 games/season is his average, including missing 10 last year. He shouldn't be a huge worry to miss games anymore than anyone else. Even Newhouse missed 4 games in the last three years.
as was suggested above - while it may make sense, the reports I've seen have had him practicing at RT and LG.
If the Giants were trying to trade for Monroe it reinforces the idea that they don't see Hart as ready to compete for the starting RT position, and if he was practicing at LG he may not be their first choice as a backup RG either.
Looks like Hart is pegged as a reserve-level player at best right now by the coaching staff, and that they are possibly still trying to figure out what his best position might be.
I don't necessarily disagree with Monroe's position. Opiates don't seem like a smart way to treat pain.
The reason it scares me is that he's obviously concerned about dealing with chronic pain. Not sure I'd invest too much in a player who is too concerned about that - could be nothing but could also mean he's nicked up and his injury history suggests he's not the type to play through pain a la Flowers.
didn't at least trade him, and get something, anything for him.....he is already costing them 6M in dead cap space....
Giants would have been crazy to assume the deal he had......If the hold up was a renegotiated contract with the Giants, why would he come here now? He has the Giants offer for a baseline and will shop himself around.....but an even bigger question is, what were the injuries that he lost playing time from....he is also 29.....
Personally sounds like a good idea to me, especially with Pugh prepped to backup LT. Don't think the Giants agree with the assessment though. Would love to get some honest feedback from Solari on his first impressions with Flowers et al.

2015:Concussion took him out for 4 weeks, Shoulder surgery in week 11 requiring injured reserve
2014: a 5-game knee injury, and an ankle injury late in 2014 as well
If we sign him it will be with a contract that doesn't effect us long term. So if he gets hurt we are at the same place we are today & if he doesn't we have a massive upgrade on the OL. There aren't any better options out there.
At best he beats out either Flowers at LT and Flowers is moved to RT (not likely, imo) or beats out Newhouse at RT, and we have Newhouse to back up both OT positions, which he was brought here for originally.
Hoping we land him...he's gotta be better than Stingily and the other dreck we have at OT currently.
Forget him only being better then Stingily. The minute he's signed he's the best OT on our roster. Obviously Flowers should be improved from last year, but Monroe is a damn good OT.
I checked in on this with my source and he said there is interest and that the issue will be $$$. Monroe thinks he is an all pro and should be paid as one and the Giants see him as much closer to a guy who needs to take a short 1 or 2 year deal with little guaranteed.
Then again this same source told me that the Giants were going to take Myles Jack at 10 because his knee checked out so take it with a grain of salt.

Rick, that's likely true. But I don't think the team is going to move Flowers to RT, and if not we won't fully utilize Monroe's talent...'cause he's a LT.
I understand why the Giants did not want to sign a LT like Penn or Okung to a longterm contract.
But Monroe presumably will get a 1 or 2 year deal. Or a longer deal that allows him to be released after 2 years without huge cap implications.
A lot of LTs started out playing RT. I think Pettigout did that on the Giants. Diehl was a guard before moving to LT.
Well, if that is the case then I think management fucked up because we had 2 better LT players that were supposedly being asked to move to RT so we can keep Flowers at LT. If we change that now it means they messed up.
It's possible that Monroe declined any and all contract re-negotiation offers from NYG because he didn't want to go to a team where he'd have to compete to start at his position of choice.
Monroe has more ability than our current roster options...
The OL depth either replacing Newhouse or as a backup swing tackle. But let's not fool ourselves into thinking he is part of the long term solution. I've resigned myself to the fact Newhouse and Jerry will be the right side of the line and just hope we can make some more improvements next off season
Last thing we need is too many tackles...
Monroe is also a local product and will be a nice veteran on a young O-Line.

If you can play LT you can play RT, sure.

You're the second person who has had trouble reading the numbers.
The true numbers are 6, 11, 15 and 16 for the last four years (counting backwards). He was traded during 2013.

Stand corrected. 17 of his last 32 then?

Yes, knee issue in 2014, shoulder in 2015, I believe.

If you're looking to make it look like we're interested in a guy who just misses games: he's missed 15 games in the last two years.
Try that one.

This^^^^...may not be an improvement over MN based on MN stays on field
Seriously JR should've renegotiated with Beatty and moved Flowers to RT. I hate the Beatty hate. Beatty handled the situation bad too but ...

Poor logic. If He gets hurt after 8 games I'd rather have him for 8 and Newhouse for 8 than Newhouse for 16

OR it could be NH for 16 Monroe 0

For comparison Flowers was rated as their 65th OT & Newhouse was their 71st ranked OT.
