Jake Long: "I'm finally healthy."

Big Blue '56 : 6/18/2016 4:45 pm
Quote:

“I’m finally healthy,” Long said Saturday, via Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com. “This is the healthiest and best I’ve felt in probably about five, six years. My knee’s back. I’ve just been working out, feeling good and ready for the opportunity when it comes along.”

“When I wake up and my knee doesn’t hurt, you know what I mean,” Long said. “I feel the strength back. You can see it. You can feel it. My body feels good the way I’m moving, working out and how good I feel moving on it.”

Reese call him and tell we are interested, but only at RT
Well, the Giants obviously
Big Blue '56 : 6/18/2016 4:57 pm : link
have shown interest given they brought him in for a physical months ago. If in fact he is virtually asymptomatic, he could very well be a possible replacement at ORT, imv
I'm sure he'll take any offer
BigBlueDownTheShore : 6/18/2016 4:57 pm : link
He gets. Why not sign him for camp and see what he has.
A guy like him may not want to go
UConn4523 : 6/18/2016 5:01 pm : link
to camp, or atleast, not all of it. He gains nothing by signing now.

Would you sign him to camp saying he has a legit shot at LT or let him know for the offset he's here to play RT

I don't see a "legit shot" for OLT, but I'm rather sure he'd be fine with anyone giving him a shot on the right side, imo

As a free agent, I think you'd have to court him with the opportunity to play LT. Stroke his ego a little bit. As he said, it's the first time he's felt healthy in years. It sounds like he wants a shot to get back to where he was and I think another team will do such. I don't agree you should hand him the LT job by any means, but you can't rule it out if he earns it

Sure you could be right, but I just don't see it. Why? No team has bothered to sign him. He may or may not be finally good to go. OLT is arguably the toughest position to man outside of QB. To make the leap from unemployable to winning the OLT job at his age and with his history, would be nothing short of remarkable..Apparently, the Giants have been unable to snare a vet to play the right side because they viewed themselves as starting material on the left. But, also apparently, the Giants have ostensibly made it quite clear that Flowers is our now and our future there
Howie should grab the kid.....
grizz299 : 6/18/2016 5:31 pm : link
"you're healthy" good, time to walk away...It took you how many years to feel good and you're in your twenty's?, how many years next time to get to "good"...forever or never?
Anyone who needs more than a few million in the bank is nuts.
Football seems like all of their lives, but if they're healthy it's not.
Actually,
Big Blue '56 : 6/18/2016 5:35 pm : link
he was 31 last month
Chris and Kyle are Howie's sons..

Give him a shot to beat flowers for olt
micky : 6/18/2016 5:42 pm : link
Imho he ain't going beat flowers out considering injury.

Let's just go with MN for now..can't fix everything in 1 off season..you start grasping at straws
Whoever shakes loose
UConn4523 : 6/18/2016 5:42 pm : link
isn't going to be a better option than Flowers at LT so there's no point in negotiating with a player who won't play RT. All these guys who remained unsigned are so for a reason and they should be seen as depth or a possible upgrade at RT. People need to get used to it.

I would hope he feels healthy....it's June. I don't see him being a starter anymore, he won't last more than a few weeks and he has lost a couple steps. You don't want this guy being your starter.

Why would you give him a shot at LT when his injury history and age make it about as likely as hitting the power ball that he'd be around more than 1 or 2 seasons? We know they think Flowers has LT ability and we also k is he played most of the season w a high ankle sprain. No reason to move him. Of he looks crappy at least along could fill in. Newhouse there would be a disaster
I would be ok with Long as a backup RT/G
Jay on the Island : 6/18/2016 7:04 pm : link
I know that he hasn't played guard in his career but when he was drafted several scouts said his best position would be either RT or G.
I like Flowers at LT
BigBlueDownTheShore : 6/18/2016 7:14 pm : link
Lots of BBI assholes have written him off after a rookie year at LT at ripe age of 21. Give the guy a break, he has plenty of room for growth, and he is tougher then anyone else on the Oline.

Long could come in and play mauling RT if he is indeed healthy.
I Like Jake Long
32_Razor : 6/18/2016 9:43 pm : link
He would be a big bonus to have with are OL in its current state.
Took him long enough.
Dave in Hoboken : 6/18/2016 9:53 pm : link
Probably too little, too late, anyways.
Its pretty clear Flowers is the LT
PatersonPlank : 6/18/2016 10:15 pm : link
I'd be fine with Long at RT.

Flowers is the LT. Giants want him there. Everyone just needs to accept this. Most posters are just sick and tired of people insisting on the contrary. Even if that were right it's not fricking happening. Giants love flowers take that as a good thing. It probably is.
And honestly
djm : 6/18/2016 10:28 pm : link
If you like a young player and saw enough in the rookie year you don't fuck with him for a borderline or soon to be journeyman and undoubtably aging tackle like jake long. And you sure as hell don't break the bank for a flawed High priced FA name at tackle when you just invested big draft resources in a player. And you like him.
Lastly
djm : 6/18/2016 10:30 pm : link
The Giants have left tackle fall back options like Pugh. Hopefully they can sign a guy like long and let him play RT and if needed LT. Nothing wrong with that.

At 31 years of age, I think it's premature to say he's lost a couple of steps without knowing the full extent of the injuries he played through and what it means that he is now as "healthy" as he's been in the last five years. If he can pass a physical, I would be in favor of signing him to a veteran minimum deal with no guaranteed money and incentives based on playing time. And only if he's willing to show up for the first day of camp and compete.
It won't take very long for his body to break down again
barens : 6/19/2016 8:35 am : link
if he signs with an NFL team. Father time win every single time.
Hard for me to understand how anyone
Big Blue '56 : 6/19/2016 9:02 am : link
can criticize Flowers' rookie year without placing an asterisk next to his name signifying a really bum ankle. I don't care how young he is, try walking on a high ankle sprain much less play on it..
Its true that both Monroe and Long
XBRONX : 6/19/2016 9:06 am : link
have had injury problems the last two years. But Reese would never bring in either one to compete at LT wvem at a Giants friendly ontract. Think of the ramifications if one of the two was signed and clearly played better than Flowers at LT.

djm : 6/19/2016 9:54 am : link
Even if u want to play devils advocate and ditch any injury excuses it was still his rookie year. Of all positions I'd say LT and QB are the toughest to pick up in year one. The fact that flowers didn't torpedo the offense as a rookie is a big positive. Of course he struggled he was a rookie. He still held his own. As a rookie. Flowers is the least of our worries.
djm,

Can't hurt, although I take it with a grain of salt when a player says "I'm healthy again'...Especially an unemployed FA,
I don't think this guy would balk about playing RT, just a guess.

Acceptance is difficult at times on BBI, LOL.
I happen to agree with you.
