I don't think the Wilpons make any decision on Gurriel without having thought out (hopefully talked out w/ David) the future status of Wright. Their investment in him is significant. I doubt they will make a Gurriel decision in a vacuum. There's been much talk about the insurance on Wright's contract. It may not be what it seems. From a 2013 blog ...
Quote:
Regarding the insurance on a contract, here are some things you need to know:
Most of the insurance policies are covered within 3 year intervals, and most policies are done solely to protect teams from injuries to players on a long term deal. So for example, David Wright’s new 8 year deal would likely get a new policy after 2016, because he was already signed in 2013.
If, in fact, the present policy lapses before 2017 how likely is it they will renew? Will the Wilpon's disregard any money owed to Wright in making a decision on Gurriel? Only they know the answer ... and possibly Sandy.
are also ignoring the huge money teams are pouring into "lesser" named and less proven guys. Soler got 30 million, Dodgers gave Yusniel Diaz 15.5 million, Dodgers gave Pablo Fernandez 8 million, Dodgers gave Yasiel Sierra 6 years 30, Reds gave Iglesias 7 years 27 million. These Cuban players are still getting loads of money.
Great!
Again. Why the attitude? I'm giving you evidence that that "hot" Cuban market is still hot. The Dodgers went over their limit to sign Diaz which means he cost them 31 million, Omar Estevez got 6 million to sign, 6 million in overage for 12 million bucks total.
Im just offering my opinion. A few notable examples appear to be busts. The track record isn't as clean as it used to be. That's all I was saying. I was suggesting because of Gurriel's age and it being mid-season + a few notable busts/players like Puig not performing... all 30 teams might not be beating down the gates to sign him. Again. My opinion. We are simply discussing.
honestly don't see a difference between what you said he was "asking for" and what unnamed sources thing he should get? You don't think suggesting the Cuban market is now "cold" and me responding with a valid response is fair? I guess we shall move on but this is strange even for you. I didn't attack you at all. I wanted to see the link which suggested this. that is all.

Sure. But once I showed you exactly where I got it from I assumed we were both admitting what the exact quote was. It wasn't like I was hiding it from you. Should have been dropped right there. I dont remember word for word everything Ive ever read when having a discussion. I also never even read the Heyman piece. Cerrone's sentence is a little misleading which is typical for him which I thought I also laughed at a bit. Whatever.
38th round pick @thereal_lilj07 has indicated he will not be signing with the Mets #Mets
Was he one of the players the Mets needed to gamble on over slot to entice him? I remember you posted three or four names that the Mets had to sign to make this draft more interesting.

I had never heard of him before the draft. None of the experts had much about him. Had a solid scholarship to Nevada so he could be pretty decent in a few years. The 3 "big" names are Planck, Cleveland and Cortes. Cortes has basically said he's going to school. The money doesn't seem to be there for both Planck and Cleveland so hopefully 1/2.
of right now the Mets are only about 45,000 in surplus (waiting on Alonso, Kay, Paez) but it's hard to see how they would save enough on those 3 that Cleveland and Planck both sign. Planck claims he already turned down nearly 500,000
It should take between 6-8 weeks for the ligament to heal completely and before Lagares begins a rehab stint in the minors. Assuming no setbacks, we could see Lagares return to the team at the beginning of September. AmazinAvenue blog ... - ( New Window )

Yeah so probably looks like one or the other? Holderman did agree though right? Its not official yet though?

Holderman signed and is in Kingsport, received 400,000 to sign. I've spoken 29th rounder Alex Haynes a few times and he said the Mets aren't sure if they can sign either Cleveland or Planck and if they can't they will call him with an offer.

Syndergaard already pitched against KC on opening week... Â
...with Noah batting, do you guys think KC looks to throw at him (at least inside)? I still have visions of Mike Moustakas (who is out for the season) yelling at Syndergaard from the dugout.

As I mentioned in last nights thread, there has been no news here since basically draft day. his asking price was nearly twice what the Mets offered him.
I think that stuff is all over with now. Noah already got tossed for "throwing at" Utley with no warning a few weeks ago. He's not going to want to get involved in any of that today and I doubt the Royals are either. It's over. Time to move on.
was looking into Valencia a bit more.
Valencia 2015 2.2 fWAR over 105 games
Valencia 2016 1.2 fWAR over 50 games
He also was worth 2.0 fWAR in 2010 in only 85 games and 0.9 fWAR in 2013 with the Orioles in only 52 games. His value has been bubbling to the surface for a while now. His emergence shouldn't be "that" shocking.

Is the draft round a typo? Mets offered a THIRTY-THIRD round pick $500K, and he turned it down because he's looking for $1 mill?
Where does a 33rd round pick get the balls asking for so much money? Is there a reason he dropped so much (ie, is he a boras client or something)?

He's there in the 33rd round because he's asking for X. They were prepared to draft him in the 3rd round at 500K and he balked, they drafted him anyway (33rd) likely as a backup plan in case one of the high picks decided not to sign.
I want them to get Reyes, but I'd prefer to not break up the MI def Â

All part of the game Speedy and part of what makes the baseball draft so unique. Plenty of talented high school players perfectly content to go to college and improve their stock even more unless they are blown away by money over-slot by a major league team.
I think that stuff is all over with now. Noah already got tossed for "throwing at" Utley with no warning a few weeks ago. He's not going to want to get involved in any of that today and I doubt the Royals are either. It's over. Time to move on.
Thanks arc, I hope you're right - Noah is our clear ace and was more concerned than looking for something.
Is literally meaningless, unlike any other sport. The round a player is drafted is has literally nothing to do with the level of his talent. Some kids get drafted way earlier than they should because they will sign under slot. And others get drafted in the 33rd just because, well why not.
Once a player goes up drafted at the level he feels he is "worth", the only way a team drafts him is purely in the hope they may be able to have enough to go over slot, or the demands were a bluff.

Day game after a night game = normal
Speaking of TDA, I didnt like his new stance last night. Annoys me a bit how often he adjusts his swing.
Matt Reynolds making pro debut in outfield. Did a little in spring training and has been working on live reads in BP
