Read Rick Atkinson's "The Long Grey Line" a few months back. Extensive look at the West Point Class of '66 from the academy through Viet Nam and thereafter. He reported a lot of hazing, but none of it involving sexual abuse.

small representation of what we had to do:
streaking (many times, once I had to walk in naked to cumberland farms and shoplift something; anything)
gooping (totally naked lay on the ground and had buckets of puke, urine, horse shit, etc. and worse stuff poured over you)
I was paddled over 1000 times (on the final night of pledge),
I had to tie a string around my privates (just the frank, not the beans) and at the other end of the string I tied a pen and I had to get 100 females in my school to sign a stupid "petition". by the end of the day word got out what was going on and it wasn't pleasant.
more stuff like that which wasn't sexual per se, but was degrading hazing nonetheless and nothing like what is being described in this article.
Not common, my school had them though all the way back to the 50's.

No, not even close. though at that age any time a female is even thinking about your junk it's practically a sexual encounter, this was anything but. it was humiliating and painful. I got through about 70 names before word spread.
so it only lasted maybe 45 minutes where people in the fraternity would call attention to it and while on pledge it was a situation where if a fraternity member told you to do something you had to do it.
I had to cut one guys lawn at his house with a scissors. that was a great way to spend 8 hours and cover about 40 square feet.

No reflection or judging, pj, but I cannot fathom doing any of that. The first crap that was pulled and I would have gone apeshit on the guy (and probably get my ass handed to me by the group).

Sadly, it was a choice. like most (all?) fraternities, you have to be invited to pledge, and then accept. I knew pretty much what I was getting into and at the time decided it was something I wanted to do.
I wish I could say it was the dumbest thing I did as an adolescent/young man, but my youth was littered with bad decisions.
Not relating it to rape or sexual assault like in Australia in the OP, just the relating to the hazing angle. I was a bad kid, but I'd never cross that line.
