The Master Plan?: Owa Odighizuwa to fill Tuck/Kiwi Role

When the Giants practiced throughout the spring, it wasn't uncommon to see Odighizuwa on the interior, working alongside defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins in nickel (pass-rushing) defenses.

"This spring has really been getting a better understanding of the defense, day in and day out," Odighizuwa said. "I'm moving around, doing different things. Sometimes I'm dropping at our 'Joker' position. Sometimes I'm rushing from that position [as a linebacker]. Sometimes I'm at defensive end. Sometimes I'm rushing from tackle. So just trying to get those nuances down and whenever I'm in those positions, understanding the details of those positions."

To get a lot of playing time this preseason. He is one of the players who I will be most interested to see.

is a huge x factor.
Tuck & Kiwi had different roles.

Tuck would move between end and tackle, but mostly with his hand in the dirt. Kiwanunka would line up at end and linebacker, sometimes in a 3-point stance, sometimes standing up.

Owa seems like a logical fit for the Tuck role, not so much for the Kiwanuka hybrid DL/LB role. But what do I know?

That's the first thing I thought... Tuck and Kiwi didn't really have the same role.
Ranaan made the distinction nicely, imo...

they did play different roles, and it looks like OO is being groomed for either. Basically looks like he's convinced them of his versatility and they're looking for ways to get/keep him on the field.
No Only Does It Appear We Had A Nice Draft

the bonus (hopefully) will be getting significant contributions from players drafted in 2015 that missed most of the year. Owa is one of those players. Not sure about Behre, but it would be nice if one of the 2015 safeties could play a big role. It appears the 2016 3rd round pick has the inside track to be next to Collins.

If I'm not mistaken, Owa played outside LB in college so I'd imagine he may be versatile in both roles.
Master Plan?

How about go get the guy with the ball as fast as you can...
Agree...Master Plan?

OO is another one of those potential players, Reese has drafted, that has problems staying on the field....he is untested.... a lot of hoopla, like Bromley....until he gets out there and actually does something, he is a pipedream....

I will be pleasantly surprised if he amounts to anything, because, like I have stated, this team has no depth....it's quite possible, even if the starters stay healthy, they could burn themselves out......we need guys like OO, and Bromley, to step up....but until they actually do, we just don't know what their upside is....
They have been trying to relive 2007 for a while now.....

Tuck was outstanding rushing from the inside in that playoff/superbowl run. They also had some success with the Nascar formation in 2011. Since then, both Fewell and Spags have been putting DEs on the inside with poor results. Inside, they simply get man-handled and there is no push from the middle of the pocket. As we saw when Walton was our center, there is nothing worse for a QB than pressure up the middle. It keeps them from stepping up and keeps the lines clean for DEs. When you constant force DEs to rush from inside, you end up with no sacks and clean pockets.

Why not just let Hankins and Bromley rush from the middle? Sometimes coordinators are 95% coaching and 5% auditioning for the next HC job by being 'innovative.'

I don't believe that OO is the "master plan." I loved the pick and would love him him to go nuts next year. But hes a rotational DE who is a good run defender. If he can stay healthy that should give us some DL rotation. If he develops some pass rush, that'd be a huge bonus being able to rotate 3 guys who can get upfield, than that's a huge bonus.

Honestly, I think our "master plan" is getting turnovers. Hence all the investing in the DL and secondary. Get this offense more opportunities to score and actually be able to get the ball back and this team can make things happen.

OO can be coached up to play both those positions it will make it harder for the opposing offenses to read the sub packages if the same players are on the field.

Let's hope he can apply what he has learned and grow in the role.
I think Tuck had the huge

advantage because I don't think offensive lines were prepared for the "four aces" package.

NE was our last regularly scheduled game in 2007 and I'm not sure if Spags showed them the 4 aces even then. in the unrelenting evolution of the game, guards and interior players have changed since 2007 / 2012 and are better suited to handle the speed of a DE.
We know that Hankins -when he's right - can be a disputor from the interior and suspect that Snacks - when freed from the doubles and restraints of a nose in the 3-4 - will get a surprising push too.
Though it doesn't follow from their body types, Bromley specs out as a "disruptive" type while Odi plays the run better.
All to be proven. Meantime the always critical peanut gallery is not happy with four all pro types in the front four, they want all pros for depth and would like Bob Lilly and Mean Joe Green coming in from the bench, in denial of the restraints that a cap forces on depth.
Fact is, Bromley and Odi should provide outstanding depth.

is crazy diesel, I could see him as an inside rusher in obvious passing situations.

Excellent analysis.

Personally I think Hankins is going to continue to be a 3-4 down player. I think most are downplaying snacks ability based on his previous play against the pass. I think he's going to surprise us all and actually cause some real pressure on passing downs.

Everyone needs to remember that Tuck and Kiwi moving around didn't really help their long term health.

You are mistaken, he played 3-4 DE. Which makes him versatile at DE/DT.
