When the Giants practiced throughout the spring, it wasn't uncommon to see Odighizuwa on the interior, working alongside defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins in nickel (pass-rushing) defenses.
"This spring has really been getting a better understanding of the defense, day in and day out," Odighizuwa said. "I'm moving around, doing different things. Sometimes I'm dropping at our 'Joker' position. Sometimes I'm rushing from that position [as a linebacker]. Sometimes I'm at defensive end. Sometimes I'm rushing from tackle. So just trying to get those nuances down and whenever I'm in those positions, understanding the details of those positions." |
Owa seems like a logical fit for the Tuck role, not so much for the Kiwanuka hybrid DL/LB role. But what do I know?

That's the first thing I thought... Tuck and Kiwi didn't really have the same role.

If I'm not mistaken, Owa played outside LB in college so I'd imagine he may be versatile in both roles.
I will be pleasantly surprised if he amounts to anything, because, like I have stated, this team has no depth....it's quite possible, even if the starters stay healthy, they could burn themselves out......we need guys like OO, and Bromley, to step up....but until they actually do, we just don't know what their upside is....
Why not just let Hankins and Bromley rush from the middle? Sometimes coordinators are 95% coaching and 5% auditioning for the next HC job by being 'innovative.'
Honestly, I think our "master plan" is getting turnovers. Hence all the investing in the DL and secondary. Get this offense more opportunities to score and actually be able to get the ball back and this team can make things happen.
Let's hope he can apply what he has learned and grow in the role.
NE was our last regularly scheduled game in 2007 and I'm not sure if Spags showed them the 4 aces even then. in the unrelenting evolution of the game, guards and interior players have changed since 2007 / 2012 and are better suited to handle the speed of a DE.
We know that Hankins -when he's right - can be a disputor from the interior and suspect that Snacks - when freed from the doubles and restraints of a nose in the 3-4 - will get a surprising push too.
Though it doesn't follow from their body types, Bromley specs out as a "disruptive" type while Odi plays the run better.
All to be proven. Meantime the always critical peanut gallery is not happy with four all pro types in the front four, they want all pros for depth and would like Bob Lilly and Mean Joe Green coming in from the bench, in denial of the restraints that a cap forces on depth.
Fact is, Bromley and Odi should provide outstanding depth.

Excellent analysis.
Personally I think Hankins is going to continue to be a 3-4 down player. I think most are downplaying snacks ability based on his previous play against the pass. I think he's going to surprise us all and actually cause some real pressure on passing downs.
Everyone needs to remember that Tuck and Kiwi moving around didn't really help their long term health.
Quote:
Tuck would move between end and tackle, but mostly with his hand in the dirt. Kiwanunka would line up at end and linebacker, sometimes in a 3-point stance, sometimes standing up.

You are mistaken, he played 3-4 DE. Which makes him versatile at DE/DT.
