I loved when Simmons only wrote columns, but I was hit or miss with his podcasts. I can't begrudge him for wanting to advance his career, but that was tough to watch last night. It seemed so forced and enough about deflategate, it's been beaten into the ground already.
It was the first show so I will give it another chance, but I feel like it's going to be more of the same. Not to get all "back in my day", but I really miss the days of him writing 3 or 4 times per week with his Friday football column during the season. But as I mentioned everyone wants to move up and Simmons certainly has, but I just don't think he has what's needed to be a TV personality. Perhaps I will be proven wrong on that.
But that show just was not good. I did chuckle when the two Bens were whining about Brady and then Eli came up in the convo. They'll never get over 18-Doh!
Why would a "respected" actor and director show up DRUNK to the taping of a nationally-televised program?
And why would a show allow one of their guests to appear on their program when they know the guest had been drinking?
I guess it's ratings over integrity, since a drunk Ben will bring more attention to your show, but if that's the case, don't expect us to take your show seriously.
And while I'm on this mini-rant, does Ben have to drop the F-bomb in every other sentence? I use the word occasionally when I'm talking with friends and trying to be funny, but when you over-use the word it makes you sound stupid...or in Ben's case, drunk and stupid.
I didn't watch it, and now that I know it is about Deflategate,
I won't. I've read Simmons since his Geocities days, but I wonder if he's bitten off more than he can chew. The Ringer is astoundingly ordinary, and I don't think that HBO brass is going to be too patient with a Boston-centric show.
I know part of his appeal is that he is a "fan", but his insistence on bringing every discussion back to one of his Boston teams is really tired.
I kinda expected the show to be Bostoncentric, but having a drunk Affleck crying about deflategate and dropping F Bombs left & right is swinging for the fences.
Who's Simmons' guest next week? Ted Williams' frozen head?
the editing was really "hurried" for lack of a better word. Simmons does pretty well on his podcasts where the discussion flows like a normal conversation. This was more like rapid fire ideas and takes getting batted back and forth. I don't think he's built for this format at all. He doesn't have the comedy chops or the super magnetic personality/charisma for this.
I like bill simmons podcasts because he gets a lot of good guests. what I hate about it is you always have to hear about how great the Celtics/Larry Bird are and about the patriots no matter who is the guest. if you like the NAB though he does have a lot of good insight.
Affleck came off as a phony. All demure for 90% of the interview and like a light switch completely loses his shit over deflategate, which was obviously the only reason he was there. Pretty sure he wants to like Brady's balls. Very odd.
I've always been a Bill Simmons fan (aside from Boston-related pieces) and I love his podcasts. I've also watched a bunch of his podcasts so I'm used to seeing him in this format.
I thought he did a fair and fitting tribute to LeBron. Charles Barkley is always entertaining, combining funny and genuine opinions without regard for political correctness with some idiotic comments as well.
I liked the Affleck interview. I enjoy watching huge celebrities get aboslutely pissed off and emotionally invested in sports. It's one of the few ways to see big celebrities act just like regular people.
It was a choppy first episode, but as time goes on, I expect him to find his footing and see which pieces work and which don't.
Like rookies, it always takes time for talkshow hosts to find their rhythm and comfort level.
Looks like both Simmons and Ben got a 2 for 1 deal at the surgeon.

I did notice something looked a bit off with Affleck. His face looked different to me.

He is just okay on TV.

I got through 1:47 of that video and had to turn it off. Just awful.

And that was just as cringe worthy as Joe Bucks steaming pile of shit.
Did he mean to say Goodell doesn't have the "tegrity" while also slurring about 15 of the following words????
