NFT: History Mystery Solved: Both Iwo Jima Flag Raisings...

A panel found that Private First Class Harold Schultz, of Detroit, was in the photo and that Navy Pharmacist's Mate 2nd Class John Bradley wasn't. Bradley had participated in an earlier flag-raising on Mount Suribachi, and his role took on a central role after his son, James Bradley, wrote a best-selling book about the flag raisers, "Flags of Our Fathers," which was later made into a movie directed by Clint Eastwood.

This is very surprising... the amount of time gone by and the fact that none of the flag raisers (both events) who survived the battle on Iwo or the war never said anything. It really makes you wonder why John Bradley never told anyone he was part of the original flag raising. Just wow...

I do think John Bradley participated in numerous War Bond Drives as an Iwo Jima Flag raiser. Maybe he didn't distinguish between the two different flag raisings?

There is no 'stolen valor' associated with this re-write of history. It's sad that it took two-generations plus to clear-up who the Flag Raisers were...

what an idiotic comment. This is the generation were half the country was lynching people in the south. Where regiments and water fountains were separated by color. WhereJewish refugees were sent back to die. Where many a person here liked America. Thank god the generations that have come after have fixed some of these things. I'm quite thankful of those who served in ww2. I have no doubt my generation would do the same. But criticizing this much more civilized, accepting and original generation is the words of an old dying has been.

Hitler. The war against Japan was an imperial war as we now know and after it we brutally decimated the Philippines. Thank god my generation has a brain.

know, they're going to tell us Ira Hayes wasn't there either.

There they battled up Iwo Jima hill,
Two hundred and fifty men,
But only twenty-seven lived,
To walk back down again.
And when the fight was over,
And Old Glory raised,
Among the men who held it high,
Was the Indian, Ira Hayes.

in all fairness what did this guy do wrong? He responded to I love clams who said this generation was selfish and narcissistic. He merely pointed out flaws in the older generation. Sometimes I think there is censured opposing views here. Now if he got deleted for past behavior fair enough. But I don't see anything wrong here.

It eerily all ties together...

Did Harold Schultz ever claim
section125 : 6/23/2016 7:00 pm : link
he was one of the flag raisers or protest about it?

And, if Brady did take part in the 1st flag raising and not the famous picture and 2nd one, does that really change anything as, he did in fact, raise the flag on Mount Suribachi?

James Brady was an Iwo Jima Flag raiser. The confusion I have is why he didn't point that out during Bond drives, or anytime after the war. James Brady even attended the Iwo Jima Flag raisers memorial dedication ceremony...

James Brady is a hero. This correction of history doesn't diminish that in any way. I'm more interested in history being correct and James Brady missed the opportunity to do that...
Sorry...
BamaBlue : 6/24/2016 8:17 am : link
Brady=Bradley.

This is a photo of Pvt Harold Shultz, the guy who was mistaken for James Bradley. He died in 1995 and never said a word to anyone about his role in the flag raising... I completely understand where he would not want to bring attention to himself, but I don't understand why he would not want history to be correct.

Bradley, yes I made the mistake. True it is a mystery why this wasn't corrected by Schultz, Bradley or USMC.
As to the bond tours, did Bradley know at the time? There were two pictures taken and published. And he did raise a flag on Iwo. Is he the only one from the 1st raising, not pictured in the 2nd? Was it the same squad that raised both flags - minus Bradley and inserting Schultz?

Should not reply to this drivel but that is the environment they were born into not how you define that generation. My father had it easy. Born into the depression and sent to Europe in 1944 leaving a wife and young child. Never heard a word of complaint from him about it. Obviously had a easy start to his life unlike the mini aggressions the newer generations are forced to deal with.

well said! A generation is difficult to define, but certainly the challenges of the Greatest Generation were mountainous in comparison to our troubles. Perfect...? No way, but they paved the way for us to enjoy a rather cushy existence where we lament slow internet access and fight over political clap-trap.
