"The NFL's top 2 companies"

BestFeature : 6/24/2016 3:04 am
I'm watching the 85 Super Bowl on the NFL Network and Dick Enberg says "the stage is set for the NFL's top 2 companies the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots". Is this something they used to say instead of "teams" back in the 80s. Is it some 80s slang? Can someone help me out here? I've never heard of a team referred to as a company in any sport before.
No

Absolutely nobody would have referred to the Patriots in 1985 as a top anything in the NFL. They won a very weak AFC title. The top 4 or 5 teams all resided in the NFC.
for that year, they were the 'top 2 companies'

who advanced through the playoffs. seems Enberg went a litte Dennis Miller on us before Dennis Miller went Dennis Miller on us.

Well, I don't blame the guy for calling the Patriots as a top 2 team when they're in the Super Bowl. Him hyping up the game is understandable and there's a school of thought that the finalists are always the top 2 teams in any sport. To me it was him saying "companies". I rewound it and listened again and unless I'm tripping he said companies.
