Is The Single Biggest Issue For Giants in 2016 Injuries?

It's not all bad, though. Athlon has the Giants ranked eighth in the 16-team NFC, with the Redskins seventh, just behind the sixth-ranked Minnesota Vikings, who Athlon has pegged as the conference's second wild card team. And, the magazine says, the Giants have a chance to exceed expectations - but only if they stay healthy.

"The Giants' dirty little secret is that by almost any measure, they've been the most injured team in the NFL over the last five years," the magazine says. "McAdoo hopes to change that by overhauling the Giants' strength and conditioning programs ... if it works, they have the players to be a 10-win team. They don't have a ton of depth, though, so in the end they'll need them all."

What does early 2016 NFL preview magazine predict for Giants? - ( New Window )
Short answer?
Klaatu : 6/24/2016 11:26 am : link
Yes.
Agree.....
Doomster : 6/24/2016 11:48 am : link
If the starters can avoid major injuries, this team can win division and make the playoffs, easily.....

Throw in the same monkey wrench of the last 3 seasons, and without depth on offense or defense, this team can quickly get into trouble.....

It's always a big issue for any team. Let's hope we can escape alot of them. But yes, I really like this team so far and think it can really go to the playoffs and, dream, even to the SuperBowl where Eli can bag a third ring.
No.
BrettNYG10 : 6/24/2016 11:56 am : link
I think it's been overstated here as a reason for the team's failures in recent years.

Barring an injury to Eli, of course. The team gets a pass if that were to happen.
Absolutely!

Disclaimer: Not referring to the league "norm." Just the ridiculous, over the top injuries that have decimated our starters AND THEIR DECENT backups the last 3 years..

Tempting the injury gods never good.

HAPPY THOUGHTS!
It's one of the major issues
Larry in Pencilvania : 6/24/2016 12:06 pm : link
Including the right side of the offensive line, the wide receivers after OBJ, the defense gelling and overall depth. Let's not forget the safety position
Bottomline injuries are always going to happen
micky : 6/24/2016 12:43 pm : link
That's where depth and quality is vital..a lot pass it of as not as importance here
No

it's how will ben McAdoo fare as the head coach. can he get the most out of this team week in week out? will there be some rookie mistakes? can he get his team out of a slump either within a game or during a stretch of games?

Pretty much.

If you have them (as the Giants did in recent years) then all your issues are exacerbated and you get new issues you didn't expect.

Also depends on which injuries. Eli, JPP and Snacks Harrison going on IR would be one thing. Orleans Darkwa, Jay Bromley and Trevin Wade going on IR would be another.
Depth is such an easy thing to say and incredibly
Jimmy Googs : 6/24/2016 1:13 pm : link
difficult concept to achieve since it is pegged to so many other factors.

In fact, you could actually say the Giants should have had a great opportunity to create Depth since they have been the most injured team over the past 5 years when it comes to starters missing games. Game experience alone throughout the ranks alone should have improved the depth to some degree.

However, that Depth has never materialized because of those other factors including poor drafting/scouting, injuries also to reserves, lack of player development, cap space, etc.

Need 53 guys (and a practice squad) that are all motivated and being developed as if they are going to be a starter at some point at their position. That is "next man up" football...
FINALLY
giantfan2000 : 6/24/2016 1:14 pm : link
yes every team is injured but the Giants have had record breaking amount of injuries the past few years
in addition it seems like the careers have been cut short for injuried Giant players

case in point
Hakeem Nicks -
in 2012 playoffs he was as dominate as any WR i have seen in post season
but within 3 years he is shell of player and his career is done..

so instead of having a great WR in his prime .. Reese has to draft another high round WR
OBJ is great but that means a hole at another position that needs to be filled can not be --

This has happened the past few years that is why the Giants lack any depth at positions ..

Nice and succinct. Since I don't spend a second on OTAs and Minicamps, was Bromley hurt or you're just using him as an example?

Some more than others.

There are some teams who get away with a few injured players. Others have more than their fair share of guys hurt.

But in the case of the Giants the last 3 years, they have been so far and away injured that they have blasted past the league averages.

Looks like I have to break out the chart again:

Just compare their total number to the average itself for all teams. It is insane.

Not only guys missing games, but the numbers from Football Outsiders take into account guys who are on the weekly injury report (probable, questionable, doubtful). So even if they end up playing, they are clearly banged up going into said game.

Can the Giants just finish average in this category this year? That is all I ask. Average.
Depth in the Trenches....

Vernon JPP Owa Snacks Big Hank Need to stay Healthy
Ditto for the O-line ...
We need to replace Newhouse that leaves him as an adequate'
backup .
When are we signing Anthony Davis .?
I think we should start tweeting for him to come here for
a ring / Same with Loadholt ....

Agree. So that means its not the Giants issue. Their biggest issue(s) is/are defense and line play.

To paraphrase Parcell's "you are what the scoreboard says you are".....you still suck until you don't. Remember how good we looked on paper after we signed Geoff Schwartz to patch up the O-line?
Yes.

Just an example.
most injured team for 5 years

and yet it was all luck and the Coughlin regime had nothing to do with it.

What is your suggestion? strength and conditioning? practice schedule? Being 5 minutes early means your late?

what explanation is there for the injuries that condemns Coughlin?

I'm not saying one way or the other, no one has ever provided a legit explanation from anything I've ever seen.

we may just find out with the strength and conditioning changes.

Something was way out of whack.
