I hated that signing from day 1 because it seemed like an indicator Cespedes was gone and somehow his play on the field has been even more disappointing than that.
He hit RH pitchers pretty well last year and his sporadic ABs this year don't lend to much of a BA. I've seen him as an accomplished outfielder, although not with a great arm.
Last week it was Loney who had to go. This week de Aza takes the heat.
Big difference between an emergency pickup on a minimum deal (Loney)
and someone we paid almost $6M for in the offseason. Loney has done a pretty admirable job, but I don't think anyone should have expected him to be anything more than a bandaid. AdA has been a total whiff.
Obviously it makes sense Nimmo is not in the lineup
sort of like how Flores was a complete whiff until he stopped rotting on the bench for 2-3 weeks at a time and started getting regular playing time. Amazing how a little rhythm can help a hitter.
I think the Six Million Dollar Man is getting one final opportunity
and someone we paid almost $6M for in the offseason. Loney has done a pretty admirable job, but I don't think anyone should have expected him to be anything more than a bandaid. AdA has been a total whiff.
Loney has been everything you could ask. A huge upgrade defensively and he has hit enough to earn his keep.

How much he's getting paid is irrelevant, especially since he was signed to play semi-regularly opposite Lagares against RH pitching. If they knew they would end up with Ces I'm sure they would have gone in a different direction for a 6th OFer. I can't imagine they would cut him. He plays all 3 OF positions. With Legares out who plays CF when Ces gets dinged?
If things stay as they are we will be 2 1/2 out at the start of tonight. The Nats are losing 6-1 in the 4th inning. Remember how good Gio Gonzalez was earlier in the year....Matz like....he stinks now...2 HBP back to back in the 3rd.

want to hear about the ankle as he turned it going in standing up last night! That and having to make those choppy steps at full speed impact the feet/ankles.

My beef isn't really that he didn't slide but more that he tried to take 2B in the first place. His wrist is sprained, his ankle is wrapped up/sprained, and he's had hip issues on and off all year. He's clearly banged up but then dont run.
His defense is very overrated. He's slick, makes the right plays, and is fine on the DP. He does the little things but we can still do much better. He has zero range for sure.
to try to improve the team. I just hope that's not used as an excuse to keep him on the roster vs. more deserving players. Signing him was a mistake and it's looking likely they'll need to come to grips with it soon as guys get healthy.
How does TC allow him to play the field the next inning. This has been allowed to happen for how long now??? Inexcusable. Tear him a new asshole
Totally agree Shecky. By and large the players play hard for Terry, but I had a major flashback to last year's discussions of fundamentals watching that play.

My point wasn't what he was making. People have used it to cite a bad allocation of resources regarding Sandy. For every De Aza that "may" be a mistake he finds absolute diamonds and steals like the 4 I just mentioned for literally nothing.
Not running out that bunt was inexcusable. His 90 atbats he's taken all year have not been good either. Im betting just about every hitter in our lineup has had just as bad as a cold streak this year that has lasted 90 atbats however.... essentially a few weeks. I think the ADA bashing is WAY over the top for a 5th OF who's job is really OF insurance WAY DOWN on the depth chart but not running out bunts is inexcusable. You want to cut him over that... I have no problem with it.
And lets see. Sandy has cut Ollie Perez with 12 million left. Castillo with 8 million left.. jason Bay... Buyout on Cuddyer... Released Young...on and on and on. Why on God's green earth does anyone think Sandy would keep De Aza over money??

HAAAAAAAAA. "It's only spring training" - can't forget that back and forth - I didn't let that one go all season.
De Aza is struggling, so be it. It happens. He was pissed and didn't hustle. Pisses me off, but it happens. He was angry at not doing his job. But Collins not doing anything about it - inexcusable. Terry better get a tongue lashing over this.
Personally, I was pissed off about Ces slowly walking to first too. Wild pitch on ball 4, RUN. But never, EVER just walk to first regardless.
great win - getting really pumped to see Reyes back
just saw someone retweeted him and he's made like 5 twitter posts about how excited he is along with 4 or 5 instagrams. If he can even simply play the way he did for half the year in Toronto last year (.285, 20 xbh, 16 steals and only 2 CS) he's gonna be a huge addition in the leadoff spot.
I wish there was a way to see the threads right after Reyes was traded to the Rockies for Tulo. All the discussions about what people would be willing to give up to get him. And how much of his contract people here were willing to take on.

Was there a legit reason given for Ces not sliding into 2nd early in the game. I had no audio.

I very much remember being 1 of those people, though ultimately Sandy obviously did the exact right thing. Cabrera may end up being one of the best bargains of the entire offseason. Jhonny Peralta with better defense for half price.

Nope. I assumed sprained wrist, ankle, ect. but it could just be Ces being Ces. Who knows?

Nobody says it but I still think his "bruised" thigh from diving into the stands bothers him, especially after he slid a few games later and further harmed the injury. He hsnt slid much since which has caused some minor ankle issues. He slipped in LA and then again yesterday when not sliding. But I think it goes back to the injury from the stands.

Could be. They've said he has had hip issues since the beginning of the year. The stands play maybe exasperated that? He's really a tough dude. I can't believe he didn't come out last night. I dont know what to say. Some of the things he does is really admirable. Other things you just shake your head....
De Aza for Bernadina. He's having a pretty nice season and can play a little CF. A move like that certainly isn't blowing my skirt up and I doubt it moves the needle in any direction a spec but whatevs...
I think I can safely say I hold a hefty lead in negative posts about him.
But I don't think tonight merits getting cut. As Shecky said, his not running was partly out of frustration. It is still inexcusable not to run on a pop bunt but I would keep him around until Lagares is ready to return to action. However, he should definitely be benched for a few days otherwise you send the message lackadaisical play is OK. Cespedes deserves to be benched as well but he is too important to bench, So sit De Aza for a few games.
Two players people here constantly campaigned for were Gomez and Tulo. Thank God we didn't trade for either.
Thank JP for no Tulo. About the only thing he's contributed in years. But there was a TON of Tulo supporters (I'll admit, I wanted him). It was closer than most probably think but JP was adamant he was done. Something about being done, a horse, and a glue factory ;)
I don't think many here actually wanted Gomez last year (maybe year before) especially at cost of wheeler plus Flores. Gomez was atrocious last year, outside of being able to control him this year no idea why we were even kicking that tree

Not going to make any specific posters feel bad, but I battled people here about Gomez daily last year. The argument was that he had had a 3 year stretch of very high production and could bounce back. The guy sucks.
on here were excited for the Carlos Gomez trade so no one really has a right to criticize others desires to improve the team. Whether it was Tulo, CarGo, Kemp (some people wanted Kemp IIRC) or anyone else.
My whole stance has been wanting to trade with the Red Sox for Betts or Bogearts because the Sox pitching is brutal and their offense could be historic, but that ship has sailed. Now you're looking at trying to pry away Moncada or Benitendi with them if you want a prospect, no chance they deal Betts or Bogaerts.
I will also admit to wanting to considering Jurickson Profar, but that was pre second injury. But at 23, it seems he's now rounding into the prospect many thought he'd be (at least offensively).
Obviously Sandy also wanted Gomez since he agreed to trade for him
whichever of our doctors flagged his medicals certainly deserves a fat bonus. Revisionist history is almost always fun but rarely all that accurate. Most were pretty indiscriminate in wanting them to upgrade anywhere possible - whether it was the Tulo rumors in January, the Desmond rumors in March, the Zobrist rumors in June, Gomez/Bruce/Upton/CarGo/Cespedes in July. And as someone pointed out yesterday we even discussed Reyes once he was dealt to the Rox. Ironically Cespedes was apparently the organization's plan Z and he ended up being the best case scenario. Though blocking Zobrist from going to KC wouldn't have been such a bad thing.
Sure, some people were wrong about Gomez. So what? I don't
understand the need to point out that you were right while others were wrong. Especially when I argued with those very same people who were killing Cespedes in the offseason for some of the most ridiculous, unfounded things. Can't hit the high heat, bat speed trending down, and there were plenty of other doozies. Yeah, well, he's only continued to be one of the best offensive players in the game.

Nobody is going to get them right all the time.
You're also twisting your Cespedes info. Shecky mentioned that the organization didn't think he'd AGE well and that was one of the reasons they didn't want to offer him a long term deal. I used that rationale in some of my explanations because I believe Shecky is legit. Obviously, ALL of baseball had a similar stance as nobody offered Cespedes a deal. Cespedes however, was not only my number one deadline want but also my number one offseason get. We can go back and check the threads.
For what it's worth. I didn't like the trade but I admit that I was probably excited about Gomez. Tough to remember completely because the whole situation around that trade became so bizarre. Of course, very glad it didn't happen.
It's like future-Sandy went back in time and told present-Sandy "no fucking way."
and pulled out. He was under a lot of pressure to make a deal and the backlash wasn't great at first.
Gomez was just somebody I got in many arguments here with last year long before the deadline so I remember him specifically. lol. I wasn't trying to call anyone out. I apologize.

I had no thoughts about Gomez either way - it was obvious the offense needed help and as a fan I trust the FO to get it, but as soon as the first tear dropped from Flores' eye I regretted the trade and it couldn't have worked out any better other than a storybook season end - which we didn't quite get.
Hopefully this year, I cringe after every pitcher start except those ironically from the 43-year old Colon, so hopefully they all stay healthy and Wheeler joins the team post AS break as planned and gains some command. Will be nice to have an insurance policy in case one of the starters does need a breather.
Yes, Z, you are correct. That poster did state that those negatives
came from the front office and certain people took those things as gospel and ran with it. But the claims were so ridiculous in nature that it was obvious that the seeds were being planted to excuse the reason for not signing him. It was so easy to see through. It was comical.
Just because some poster may have some type of insider info doesn't mean you have to believe the garbage that they throw out their (the FO, not the poster).
There were 2-3 big names available at the deadline. Sandy seemed to be involved with all of them. The Gomez fiasco happened two days before Sandy spent almost the whole day down to the wire working on Cespedes. Bruce was also another target and reports came out Sandy was working both for periods at the same time early that day.

Eh. It seemed rational to me. I think Shecky said it was going around baseball circles or something like that. Why else wouldn't more teams have wanted to get involved? t still think Cespedes is prone to the high heat and pitch outside and away however.... One of the transformations with Cespedes this year is that he laying off the pitch away a lot. Credit to him. He's obviously in the midst of his best season ever currently.
Eh, anything can seem rational if you want it to. I think
it was fairly obvious that they were excuses for not being able to sign him. The Mets clearly lucked out with it being an extreme pitchers market last offseason. It wasn't a good offseason for hitters in general, especially ones that had a pick tied to it. I certainly don't believe for one second that all the teams just happened to believe the voodoo that the Mets FO were spewing. And to just completely throw out his terrific track record. Come on.
Let's see if all those teams have those same excuses after this season when he's on the market again.
bigger market this year because of everything e's currently doing but again his age will have some effect on what he gets. He's going to be one year older. Somebody will probably give him 5 years though.
And you're probably right Phi. I think I may have been trying to excuse the front office if they weren't going to offer him a long term deal. I was certainly searching for the "why". It wasn't money IMO. They had no problem offering him 25 per up to three years.
I still do think money had the most weight on the decision. It's clear they weren't going to pay any more than $75 million over three years. And I'm sure they view this as a one year deal more than a three year deal since it was highly likely he'd be opting out barring an injury or catastrophic season. In fact, I'm sure the one year opt out was the main selling point.
So, yes, they had no problem spending $25 million for one year (with the remote possibility that it's for three years). However, they still did not want to spend for a longer deal that could have locked him up...whether it be 4, 5 or 7 years. Which is fine, I guess.
And I don't mean to sound argumentative, if it came across that way
No Nimmo and 73 of 73 for Cabrera. Him and Walker are really being pushed. Reyes will help in that regard to give Cabrera a breather.
Conforto: "I'll be back, and I'll be doing what I did in April."
Matt Ehalt
Conforto handled it well. No excuses. Said it was on him. Said it was approach issue.
James Wagner
Conforto handled his demotion well. Wouldn't blame wrist for slump. Believes he needs to fix his approach. "I know I'll be back."
Marc Carig
Conforto believes his issues were mostly approach based. Downplayed impact of his wrist. Said it will be good to get away to fix things.
Marc Carig
"I know I can play here," said Conforto, who insisted he'll be back.
Nimmo has not arrived to the ballpark yet. De Aza will start in LF tonight.

Scherzer has been mortal now as well.
Conforto could have left before speaking with the media. But insisted on staying to speak with reporters before departing for the airport.

He is a douche. Just says idiotic things.
Like "they should play a baseball game at Mount Rushmore on the 4th of July." It's the mountains you dweeb. Hence the name "Mount" Rushmore.
I just said the same thing to my dad. He has been worthless
We need a backup CF
He remembers game 1 of this series
We need a backup CF
Exactly.
If we want to complain about De Aza making 5-6 million think about that...
Is Nimmo even allowed to come in? Seems like they are steadfast on him not playing tonight.

I actually like Granderson in the 2 hole too. He takes a ton of pitches which will allow Reyes to run and his OBP is creeping up again.
Reyes
Granderson
Cespedes
Walker
Loney
TDA
Cabrera
Nimmo
?
Not really thrilled with that setup. Really wish we had one more big threat in the middle of the lineup protecting Cespedes. Walker is meh...

He hsnt slid much since which has caused some minor ankle issues. He slipped in LA and then again yesterday when not sliding. But I think it goes back to the injury from the stands.

Totally agree Shecky. By and large the players play hard for Terry, but I had a major flashback to last year's discussions of fundamentals watching that play.
Was there a legit reason given for Ces not sliding into 2nd early in the game. I had no audio.

Could be. They've said he has had hip issues since the beginning of the year. The stands play maybe exasperated that? He's really a tough dude. I can't believe he didn't come out last night. I dont know what to say. Some of the things he does is really admirable. Other things you just shake your head....
Must watch game this month!
TC on IBB'ing go-ahead run (Freeman) in 11th to face Markakis: "I know that Nick is swinging the bat good but Ive had enough of Freddie."
Vegas destroyed Clayton Blackburn, one of the Sf Giants top pitching prospects.
Unfortunately Montero got lit up as well.
But if Gavin can overcome his mental block in the field, he can be a very good player. Especially as he starts to add a little power.
Not going to make any specific posters feel bad, but I battled people here about Gomez daily last year. The argument was that he had had a 3 year stretch of very high production and could bounce back. The guy sucks.
Nobody is going to get them right all the time.
I agree. It's petty. Let's move on.

It's like future-Sandy went back in time and told present-Sandy "no fucking way."

Just because some poster may have some type of insider info doesn't mean you have to believe the garbage that they throw out their (the FO, not the poster).

Let's see if all those teams have those same excuses after this season when he's on the market again.
And you're probably right Phi. I think I may have been trying to excuse the front office if they weren't going to offer him a long term deal. I was certainly searching for the "why". It wasn't money IMO. They had no problem offering him 25 per up to three years.
So, yes, they had no problem spending $25 million for one year (with the remote possibility that it's for three years). However, they still did not want to spend for a longer deal that could have locked him up...whether it be 4, 5 or 7 years. Which is fine, I guess.
The draftees already there plus seeing Reyes and Fonzi?
plus i love minor league baseball. one of the best entertainment values around for a family.
I saw Lester and Ellsbury play for the Pawsox (plus tons of other Sox).
