No but my brother in law and sister in law both were and they graduated in 2006 also.
You can claim hindsight about every deal and trade ever made. No team signs a guy they think is going to suck. So, it is kind of a meaningless qualifier. The deals actually break down like this IMO:
1. De Aza: Mets thought Cespedes was going to get a big offer and sign elsewhere. They wanted to move quickly to get a LH to complement Legares in CF. They probably realized they were overpaying but why fuck around to save a million and wind up losing your man? IIRC Sandy was undergoing cancer treatments about this time. Losing the #1 negotiator in baseball is significant. And yeah, I'm sure he was involved but big difference sitting at the table or lying in bed, wondering about your own mortality.
2. Bastardo: This is the signing I don't get. You have Gilmartin, Alvarez, Smoker and Edgin at AAA, That's 4 potential lefty relievers. You already have Blevins. Why do you sign a lefty reliever and for two years? The fact he sucks is more bad luck than anything. It's the decision making I question. Fine, if you are the Yankees or Red Sox and can throw away 12 million. But when you are the Mets? Sorry but a second lefty reliever was not a huge priority.
The only way I can explain it is that the Mets just made up their minds they were not going to sign Murphy and then allocated the extra budget as best they could. So, really, the big mistake was not resigning Murphy. Given Wright's fragile health, it looks like a bizarre decision. Of course, that's also because Murphy is the league MVP through June. If he were hitting .250, nobody would be talking about it.
I think going forward Mets have to re-evaluate their policy regarding these "mid-priced" signings. Cuddyer, Bastardo, De Aza and Francisco have all been terrible. Colon and Blevins were good but overall that is a low percentage of success.Cabrera, Bastardo and De Aza are collecting 20 million between them this year. IMO if you signed a bigtime FA with that, you would be a lot better off. I know Sandy has said longterm contracts are generally not worth the money but neither are his shorterm ones. I think you just have to look for the right guy. Beltran was a very good signing even though he was injured for part of the deal.
They have actually done better with guys on vet minimums or close to it like Marlon Byrd, Henderson and Byrdak.
All in all, Sandy had a terrible offseason. He completely destroyed the mojo this team had going. Murphy is the single worst decision made by any team this year. But the silver lining is guys like Nimmo are going to get a shot and moving forward, this year might actually turn out to be a blessing, as the baton gets passed to the younger guys.
Agent Peter Greenberg said Mets have an option on Reyes for next year at minimum salary. Have to pick it up by 5 days after World Series.
No one could foresee the season that Murph is having for the Nats as well as the Wright's cliff falling.

Of course it did and it was a genius move.
Neil Walker trade/Murphy QO - Walker has ben slightly better than Murphy his entire career. Not only did we get a slightly better player we got two potential first round picks out of it. Walker is having a great year albeit a bit streaky
Asrubal Cabrera- Im critical of him sometimes but this was an excellent move. A real SS who has shored up the middle and has even hit more than any SS we've had in years.
Antonio Bastardo- It was the end of the offseason. Everyone wanted another arm brought in. This guy had closing experience and setup experience and was coming off a very nice year. No lose signing. Reed was announced as the setup man by Warthen the moment he signed.
Addison Reed. Picking up his option was questioned by many here. It was very pricy. Clearly a genius trade and a no brainer to pay for his option
Alejandro De Aza- I have heard from multiple sources that Sandy was in dialogue and after Cespedes the entire time. This was an insurance policy on a guy that has excellent numbers against righties and could play all three OF spots.
This is a bad offseason?? WTF?

We are attached to every single name on the market. Gurriel? Yep. Having him in for a showcase... Trades? Yup Mets are looking at everyone that can play 3B. Bullpen help? Looking at Melancon.
What in the world could Sandy be doing more?
I am. Completely. Sorry... Francisco Rodriguez? Seriously. We were in complete rebuild mode during that time. That was a bandaid so it would appear we would have a closer. We were never going to compete during those years. He's lumping Cabrera in with De Aza and Bastardo to try and paint the picture we could have got a better player with the money spent on all three? Very transparent. Cabrera has been an excellent value signing on his own. The De Aza and Bastardo moves are insurance policy moves. If we didn't sign them we likely sign nobody. What's the difference? Its not a big deal. They didn't prevent us from signing other players nor will they in the future. Every person alive here would have preferred De Aza to Kirk and Bastardo to Gilmartin. Everyone.
This is a pretty vague might be after ...
Mark Melancon, RHP, Pirates With the Pirates falling helplessly out of it, Melancon, who becomes a free agent at the end of the season, is on the radar of a few teams looking for bullpen help. Melancon was the subject of trade talk this offseason but it never materialized. Dont count out the Red Sox. The Astros, Giants, and Mets could also be players. Melancon hasnt allowed an earned run since May 15, 14 straight appearances. He has 20 saves and has blown only one. - Nick Cafardo, Boston Globe
Now of course the world doesn't work in a vacuum and these so-called internal options are often AAAA players that aren't worth the major league minimum, and there may not be the right external option that we could spend $21 million on (cost of Cabrera/de Aza/Bastardo) without a long-term commitment. But if your point is that it was the end of the off-season and why not spend some extra money, I think as a fan yes, it makes sense, but from an executive's point of view, I think you cannot argue that financial flexibility is not a bad thing to have during the season - maybe there is a player out there who's contract we can take on, or maybe there is a cuban free agent that we can spend a bit more money on than our competitors if we're not spending on non-producers like de aza/bastardo. I'm not saying that the moves were wrong at the time, or that the philosophy is wrong, just that you can make an argument against it.
I'll keep your sources in mind when I read your posts, especially when you say something like, "I've been hearing ....".

I pretty much agree with everything you wrote. Your point about Francisco Rodriguez is dead on. So how was that a bad signing is my point. Window dressing or not. Who cars? We were clearly rebuilding.
Your second point is also correct. But if your complaining about a bad allocation of resources and needing flexibility Im not buying it. De Aza and Bastardo aren't preventing us from doing anything. We are attached to every player on the market. The flexibility is 100% still there. The same people bitching about De Aza and Bastardo would be the same people bitching about Gilmartin and Kirk and how we were too cheap to spend.
And I agree with this 100%. I was actually trying to back this up. Kind of weird how you jumped shark to the other side the moment I did. Oh well.

Bullshit? It was a published rumor on ESPN that said the Mets were one of 6 teams likely to be involved. There was a separate link within the article that expanded. All I said was "might". Your going to jump on my case about that? After I immediately apologized and admitted it was misleading? Seriously... suck a bag of dicks. I can count 3-4 things you were wrong about and had to clarify this past week alone.

Nothings final. But if theres a reunion, I hear Reyes likely goes to minors to get some time in at third base.
Hmmm. Guess that means Gurriel isn't going to be an option...
Not necessarily. It's my understanding he hasn't played any ball this year. Can't sign for another week and it's going to take some time in the minors to get in shape. Lot can happen in that period.
