FYI...
Rookie Progress Report: B.J. Goodson - ( New Window )
He has no acceleration

Look at the first 10 yards of that 40. He looks like he is running in sand.

Not trying to be negative. He definitely has good size and running around without pads doesn't necessarily tell you about how he plays on the field. However, you can see the lack of burst and that tells you he is going to have trouble staying with receivers who can cut and/or take it upfield

You could beat Goodson the first ten yards--at least if you were sober
so much for that idea

what was Reese thinking drafting a LB thinking he could have him play CB?
His 10 yard split was 1.61 seconds

Tied for 5th fastest among LB's.
What MLB can cover receivers?
Curtis in VA : 6/28/2016 9:02 am : link
If he is covering receivers then that's an indictment on the coaching staff, not him. He wasn't drafted for that.

His strengths are cerebral. Instincts. Intelligence. Leadership. He can also shed blocks and tackle.

Sounds a lot like Antonio Pierce to me - who also couldn't cover receivers but had a pretty decent career here. Sign me up.
His burrst is what he's known for

along with his football IQ. He should be a beast vs the running game.

Although, it is known, he lacks prototypical speed. So can he be sure liability in pass defense? That's very much a possibility. But I'm sure they'd scheme for that.

Pre-draft write-ups on Goodson ran the gamut from very good...

(see Sy'56 in the Team Building section) to "meh" (see Lance Zierlein at NFL.com). But I think that Dane Brugler put it best when he wrote:

IN OUR VIEW: A one-year starter, Goodson showed promise as a part-time player as a junior before earning the starting middle linebacker job as a senior, evolving into a draftable prospect. He is a magnet to the ball in the run game with the take-on skills to stack the point of attack, using his strong hands and low pad level to shed and find the ballcarrier. Goodson is a balanced athlete and limits his wasted motion, but his range is based more on his instincts, lacking ideal play speed and explosive traits for the position.

Although not a dynamic mover, which especially shows in coverage, Goodson plays a physical brand of football and always seems to be in the vicinity - quality depth player, who will push for starting reps by year two.
