NYP Post Giants Running Back Preview

Eric from BBI : Admin : 6/27/2016 4:20 pm
FYI...
Rookie could push Andre Williams off the Giants - ( New Window )
Who is capable of carrying the load?
Doomster : 6/27/2016 5:29 pm : link
Especially if Jennings goes down again?

Jennings looked good at the end of the year, because he was rested all season....and it's hard to really examine those 4 games, when essentially, the Giants were playing for nothing....

Darkwa couldn't get past two series without getting nicked....

Vereen is certainly not the answer....

Rainey or Johnson? I don't think so...

Williams can be the workhorse......but only if he shows something in preseason.....

As for Perkins, he just might be thrown into the fire....he supposedly has good hands, so he won't be one dimensional.....but that would be expecting a lot from a rookie.....

I looked back at Jennings last 4 games due to all the press about the last quarter of his season. I saw every minute of every game this year. what did I miss, I thought. Go look. Nothing against the Jets, a Long run against the Panthers, down 35-7, and coasting. another big play against ... whoever..., and one big 176 yard game. That's a great game not month to me.

I'm praying we got something in Perkins. Love that he can catch, and was supposedly 2nd best blocker and receiver out of the backfield His jump cut and in line jukes remind me of a pre-injury Cadillac Williams.
I see Darkwa

as the one who will be leaving.
RB

Define workhorse in todays NFL. There have only been 7 RB's in the last years to avg 20 carries per game (Peterson, Murray, Lynch, McCoy, Morris, Martin, Foster

Very few teams avg over 30 carries per game

There were only 2 RB's last year who rushed for over 1106 yards. There were only 5 who had more than 247 carries

Jennings will get 15 carries per game as the primary RB. They will divide hopefully 15 more between the others
Just don't do the RB

by committee thing.

that was a question i emailed the kay show when they had macadoo on and they used my question. Mac basically said he doesn't do that and that was coughlins decision. He, macadoo, likes to get one guy going with a change of pace back. My guess is jennings carries the load with perkins spelling him along with vereen on 3rd down
Williams

Has shown absolutely nothing that he is an NFL caliber running back. Worst yards per carry in the league the last two seasons. No vision or balance. Makes Ron Dayne look like Earl Campbell. Perkins can't possibly be worse.
Williams
stretch234 : 6/27/2016 8:48 pm : link
As a R he had 10 games where he had more than 10 carries. Those games he avg 3.75 ypc and had 7 td's

2015 he had 2 games with over 7 carries

Don't think he is nearly as bad as numbers of 2015.
Perkins

Will be #2, at least, before long. Book it.
Unless the run blocking improves...

Williams will not be successful and It may get a bit better
but not enough .
I would rather Jennings take the brunt of the load unless
Darkwa gets and stay healthy otherwise Jennings will run
down or get hurt .No mention of the one free agent .
Hopefully Perkinns can pick up late in the season and spell
Jennings .
Darkwa is so overrated its not even funny
blueblood : 6/27/2016 11:12 pm : link
everyone is ready to show Williams the door. Darkwa hasnt done much to impress me..
just about ever time Williams was in the backfield

the defense knew it was going to be a run and stacked the LS to stop him.

Given the Giants' OL / TE issues with run blocking and Giants' coaches refusal to include an additional OL player for run blocking, Williams never had much of a chance for the play to work.

Vereen on runs was getting about 7 yards per run, because the defense expected / played Pass when he was in the backfield.

Giants' coaches are aware of that and that is why Williams is getting support from them.

Williams is the only running back with the skill set to pickup short yardage, ( Jennings cold be used but he takes a beating on other runs to also be the primary running back to also be used for short yardage ).

Williams may not make the roster for 2016, but there are too many 3rd down type backs in camp and all of them will not make the final roster.
I am among very few here who saw on an actual

basis of looking at how Williams ran, play by play, improvement in his running 2014 to 2015. I am not going through that again as I stated my points previously on numerous Williams' threads that bashed him.

He improved his technique in many ways, but no question his overall results were awful in 2015. And in Mac's offense he simply has to catch the ball with some consistency. At least outlet dumps and flares and pitch outs.

I hope he gets lots of opportunities in preseason. It's not like Jennings or Vereen need to prove themselves in preseason or wins matter shit. We need to try to get Williams, Darkwa, Rainey and PP all the touches to make the right decisions.

You don't want to toss Williams aside unnecessarily when Jennings is closing in on his expiry date, but you can't keep him if he's a bum or just a very bad fit for the Giants'offense under Mac and Sully.

Can Jennings hold up in a bell cow role if Mac employs him as such? And if he goes down in that role who then? I think PP eventually but as a rookie? I don't know shit about the offense UCLA ran and/or how quickly PP can pick up the whole offense. Hell I can't predict how his style will hold up and work vs NFL Ds.

He looked great in college, but so do many RBs who never amount to a hill of beans in the NFL.
If the youngsters

all perform well, does the team keep Jennings? Not knocking Jennings, but he is old for a RB, and although reliable when healthy, he is nothing special.
