tonight.

Mets are falling apart. Everybody talks about our offense but the pitching hasn't been close to what we expected. DeGrom and Harvey have really struggled at times and Thor and Matz look like they are both dealing with injuries.

Hope for the best tonight but its just getting to be ridiculous with so much that's going against us this year. Feels like we are constantly swimming upstream.

The kooky thing is that that talent in this lineup does not equate to "worst offense in the league" territory? So what is it? Poor coaching? Nah, people think that coaching in baseball is not needed. Cold streak/players pressing? I doubt it...not for this long. Poor approach to hitting? Possibly. Poorly constructed, high strikeout lineup? Likely.

The reality is that outside of a torrid August last season where EVERYTHING came together...this is just not an impressive lineup. I mean, it could be. But they didn't even hit in the offseason at all...except for one person. Ironically, the one person of value that they let go. For whatever reason, mets fans apparently don't deserve a consistent, winning baseball team.
I take that back
PhiPsi125 : 6/28/2016 9:20 pm : link
The mets offense was pretty damn good in September too, even if they limped into the playoffs.

I don't know how to explain what is going on this year. Maybe it just can't be explained.
I hate to be that guy...
ZGiants98 : 6/28/2016 9:34 pm : link
Because Im upset as anyone...

But I dont think we really are going to know the story of the Mets offense or the Mets in general until after the season is over.

Yeah.. It seems obvious and lame to say but when your knee deep in shit in June its kind of hard to step out and see it as the microcosm it is.

I still maintain there is a VERY good chance this offense comes alive in the second half. Certain players aren't playing up to the back of their baseball cards (Im looking at you Granderson) We have talented players in AAA that should be contributing more than they are (Im looking at you Conforto). Im positive Sandy will keep doing whatever he can to add a spark and eventually a big addition. Im hoping at least Duda comes back sometime in August. Cespedes will heat up again... We are bound for a string of good fortune eventually. We have to be right?

Im really worried about the rotation now actually. We can not have that fall apart.

Still a lot of baseball left though. There will be more lows and there will be more highs. This team could look nothing like the same team we are watching 3 months from now in September.
Baseball season is too damn long

luck: good or bad?
Vanzetti : 6/28/2016 10:05 pm : link
My take:

Everyone keeps saying the Mets are having "bad luck" now. But actually the Mets offense has been putrid for a couple of years. Really the only time it was good was last August and September. So maybe that was actually the "good luck" period and now is situation normal.

Consider:

Cespedes was incredibly hot, whacking 17 HR in his first 45 games.

Conforto jumped from AA to put up great numbers, which have proven not to be sustainable.

TDA played better than he ever has a Met.

Johnson and Uribe had big hit after big hit.

Duda had one of his incredible hot steaks when he hit 9 HR or whatever it was in a week and a half.

Wright came back from the dead to hit. 280.

Granderson was terrific-really the only time in his tenure he has been worth the money.

Ironically, the one who seemed like luck--Murphy--turned out actually to have turned a corner as a hitter.

So far, from seeing now or the first four months of last year as bad luck, I think you can make a very good case that last August and September were good luck. And that now is a lot closer to the "real" Mets.

I do think Z is right that the team will pick it up a bit. A guy like Walker is being totally exposed batting cleanup. He has horrendous ABs in clutch situations. But if he bats sixth with a healthy Conforto and Duda in the lineup, he will be better. Ditto for a lot of the other guys who are being asked to do more than they are capable of doing.

But I think the Mets really have to take a hard look at their approach. In today's game, speed and defense are just way more important than they were in the steroid era. You also need guys who can go the other way. Pull hitters and waiting for the 3 run HR does not work any more. You need guys who make contact and guys who can run.

I don't know how you can make a case that the lineups being presented
Ten Ton Hammer : 6/28/2016 10:12 pm : link
are the "real mets". You are indirectly saying that David Wright and Lucas Duda's presence in the order isn't that important then.

Couple that with the fact that TDA and Conforto are underperforming, and I remain confused by mets fans seemingly pointing the finger at the lineup like they're dogging it, when in reality they've been broken by injuries. They lost 4 important bats in Conforto, Wright, Duda, and TDA, but the expectations never seemed to change with the reality of what was actually going on. No lineup is going to roll along missing 4 expected contributors.
I mean the top 6 hitters in our lineup
ZGiants98 : 6/28/2016 10:17 pm : link
were all wRC+ 130 hitters heading into the postseason last year and none of those players were even Murphy. And that's for the year. Not August/Sep. That's incredible. We dont have anything like that currently. Cespedes... that's it.

Loney, Flores, KJ, guys like that are league average hitters. Fine to fill in for a bit but we can't have a whole lineup filled of those kind of hitters.

I disagree that TDA was only good in August. Look at this numbers month by month last year. They are almost identical April/May... whichever months he was healthy.

I actually think TDA is about to get it going. He's only had about 3 weeks of abats this season. I feel like he's getting his hits since he's been back. He should take off soon. We still need more though. Wright and Duda were pretty big cogs in our lineup. Combined with guys underperforming we are going to have to make a move soon.
I found it interesting Sandy
ZGiants98 : 6/28/2016 10:30 pm : link
mentioned that one of the problems with Gurriel is that it would take him a month to get ready in the minors.

I think he might swing a trade and get somebody in sooner. He understands the urgency.
Goeddel is coming in

Oh boy
Snapshot of our current lineup's wRC+ since Im bored
ZGiants98 : 6/28/2016 10:41 pm : link
Granderson 104 (career 118)
Cabrera 101 (career 103)
Cespedes 148 (career 124)
Walker 113 (career 114)
Loney 117 (career 104)
Flores 89 (career 89)
Nimmo ?
TDA 52 (career 102) ( '15 131)

Looking at that is actually kind of scary. Walker, Cabrera, and Flores are right in line with their career averages almost to a T. Loney is actually playing over his head. Cespedes might still come down a bit. Really just Granderson and TDA are underperforming and TDA just got here.

My point with this is things are unlikely to change if we do nothing. They could actually get worse. A couple guys could bounce back but a couple guys could actually regress to the mean as well. We need an infusion of talent from somewhere. We just do. Reyes has been another league average hitter over the last few years. Not good enough...

Complete pass? Seems like this is the new thing I guess... Blame TDA for pitch selection now? We have a rotation full of stars and a bullpen full of vets. More than likely TDA, the pitchers, and Warthen are going over a plan on how to attack hitters before each series and each game. Ultimately its up to the pitcher to decide what he wants to do. And that pitch from Blevins was a fucking meatball.

Whatever. Not worth arguing over.

Clearly you think he's terrible. He's been throwing very well since he's been back. Its been noted many times how good he is at pitch framing. Calling games? Ive never heard in my life that was a weakness. Lets just agree to disagree. My biggest thing with him is his health. If he can stay healthy, he's a good player.

complain about it too much because Mr. Glass can't stay on the field long enough. You can down play his awful play calling all you want but he's horrible at it. And if you don't think that good game calling and helping to control your YOUNG pitching staff, then I don't know what to tell you.

But he's GREAT at framing pitches.

I disagree. The Thor game was a joke because... well... Thor. All I needed to see was Rivera (one of the best arms in all of baseball) catch a Thor game and see runners running wild to know all I needed. As for TDA, Keith and the booth were talking about it just tonight. His mechanics are fixed and just about every throw has been on the money since he's been back. He's back to being "above average" as he was all of last year.
What do you think,
Stufftherun : 6/28/2016 11:25 pm : link

Huh, I haven't heard them say that he's "fixed" but I have heard

them critique his footwork, and not necessarily in a "he's fixed" type of way. And two of his few runners he's thrown out were on horrible throws. He's not a good catcher at all, but we're obviously not going to agree on that.
I really fucking hate this lineup right now.
