Quote:
Florida State spent $234 apiece on 265 rings to commemorate the football team’s ability to beat Miami, South Florida, and Florida last season, according to a purchase order provided by the athletic department.

The rings, which also acknowledged the Seminoles’ appearance in the Peach Bowl—a 38-24 loss to Houston—cost $62,010. The school also purchased 64 pendants at $175 each. The final total: $73,210.

did they thank the student body

donors typically paid for those. What would they do if they won the national championship?
$62,000 is probably what FSU pulls in

sports programs are not net money makers

This is a myth.

You could argue that they encourage alumni to donate funds they otherwise would not. But the programs themselves are subsidized by the general funds of the school.

I would think that the NFL players that came from there paid it out of loose change.

Football and basketball pay for the other sports programs at most D1 universities - at least help pay for them.
College sports as a whole

Sure... not net money makers. But football damn sure is. And yes, there is so much money coming in from boosters for just football. That's what these boosters care about... football. That's why they pay players under the table, or for "jobs" like checking to make sure the sprinklers come on every other night. They want those sky box seats and the prestige of being connected to the program.

$62k is chump change for Florida State Football. I do think the whole thing is ridiculous. Rings are for championships... real ones, not fake ones like a non-existant state championship... that's just bragging rights... a ring for that is kind of embarrassing... and I'm betting a good number of players don't even want it.
I hope they gave some rings to the Tallahassee Police department too

Everyone just wants to help the local football program apparently.

Actually, it is pretty apparent around the country. Nobody seems immune.
You could question the amount of the rings
Joe in Knoxville : 6/28/2016 9:43 pm : link
but the price per a ring is reasonable

Bowl organizers pay for most of that also
Each team gets money to go to the bowl
BigBlueDownTheShore : 6/28/2016 9:45 pm : link
Along with bowl gifts. Plus the big dinners get rings too, along with support staff, etc.
I meant to say the

amount of rings
It's really not such a big deal.
Mad Mike : 6/28/2016 11:45 pm : link
The football team saves them at least that much on crab legs.

The amount of money
sphinx : 6/29/2016 8:12 am : link
by itself isn't what makes me smh. It's what it was spent on. A celebration of nothing. My guess is a great many of them will be in a pawn shop by the end of the year. But it's Florida, so who knows ...

Help to pay for them. But they sure as hell make money, especially if they are a Power 5 program.

Oh b.s. Connecting dots that aren't there. Some people went right to "corruption" because of no indictment, regardless of the significant issues with the accuser's story (which changed multiple times). FSU football players have been prosecuted fully in the past, the DA has been no friend to the players.

I doubt famous rapist or famous Jameis, or shameless Winston is the only player who did shit and got away with it.

I also doubt this is isolated to FSU and doesn't happen at campuses and football teams all over the country.

It is funny to read the defenders of this though, fandom goes deep I suppose.
