Florida State spent $234 apiece on 265 rings to commemorate the football team’s ability to beat Miami, South Florida, and Florida last season, according to a purchase order provided by the athletic department. The rings, which also acknowledged the Seminoles’ appearance in the Peach Bowl—a 38-24 loss to Houston—cost $62,010. The school also purchased 64 pendants at $175 each. The final total: $73,210. |
You could argue that they encourage alumni to donate funds they otherwise would not. But the programs themselves are subsidized by the general funds of the school.
I would think that the NFL players that came from there paid it out of loose change.

Football and basketball pay for the other sports programs at most D1 universities - at least help pay for them.
$62k is chump change for Florida State Football. I do think the whole thing is ridiculous. Rings are for championships... real ones, not fake ones like a non-existant state championship... that's just bragging rights... a ring for that is kind of embarrassing... and I'm betting a good number of players don't even want it.

Everyone just wants to help the local football program apparently.

Actually, it is pretty apparent around the country. Nobody seems immune.
Bowl organizers pay for most of that also

Help to pay for them. But they sure as hell make money, especially if they are a Power 5 program.
Oh b.s. Connecting dots that aren't there. Some people went right to "corruption" because of no indictment, regardless of the significant issues with the accuser's story (which changed multiple times). FSU football players have been prosecuted fully in the past, the DA has been no friend to the players.

I also doubt this is isolated to FSU and doesn't happen at campuses and football teams all over the country.
It is funny to read the defenders of this though, fandom goes deep I suppose.
