NGT: Jaylon Smith unlikely to play in 2016

Kevin in CT : 6/29/2016 9:20 am
I think we all knew this was a forgone conclusion but the fact that he hasn't had significant improvement yet is alarming.

Ed Werder & #8207;@Edwerderespn
I'm told #Cowboys No. 2 pick @thejaylonsmith has experienced no significant improvement in injured nerve so far. Playing 2016 seems unlikely

Or ever?

no way!!!!!

The Cowboys are so fearless and are going to reap the benefits, though! We could have had him if Jerry Reach wasn't asleep at the wheel!
What a waste of a high draft pick

This will be one of those picks that people look back years from now and laugh about.

the best player in the entire draft. I think it's a worthwhile gamble in the 2nd round. Will be hard to judge Dallas on this pick until the 2017 season.

I'm still very happy with Shepard though :)

Agreed it could end up being a steal or a thrown away pick. I wasn't happy when the pick was made because I like Smith and IF he returns to form they got an unbelievable steal in the 2nd round.

I'm not a Dr, but I don't think its a stretch to think that the surgeon performing the surgery and getting a first hand look at the damage is likely to have a more thorough understanding of what lies ahead compared to someone just reviewing MRIs, etc.

The flip side could also be true too though. The Dr performing the surgery is emotionally invested in the athletes recovery and could be overly confident in his capabilities as a Dr and the ability to make a full recovery.

arcarsenal : 6/29/2016 9:46 am : link
It's the epitome of a boom or bust pick. I just don't know if you can take that kind of risk on a 2nd rounder. Reese would be getting killed right now if he was the one who took Smith and these reports were coming out.

Everyone knows how good Jaylon was but no one knows how good he will be or when he will even be able to take the field.

Is it really a "steal" if they only get 3 years out of him before he hits FA? Even assuming he eventually gets back to his high level of play, do you really think that's going to happen immediately after missing a full season? I'd guess best case is 2.5 seasons of "pro-bowl level" play (pre-FA).

I had a short laughable debate with my lone Cowboys fan friend about this. I literally stopped the debate after 10 seconds because there's no point arguing this. Glad I did. Right the Cowboys know everything and the rest of the league is lost. Keep on believing....

Dallas drafted Smith
fanatic II : 6/29/2016 10:57 am : link
knowing there was very high probability he would not play in 2016. The only person that said Smith would play this year was Smith himself.

If we are having this conversation before training camp of 2017, then there is a problem. Otherwise it's wait and see.
Selecting Jaylon Smith was a high risk / high reward scenario
Beer Man : 6/29/2016 11:10 am : link
and the higher the selection round, the higher the risk. With the Giants so depleted in top end talent they could not afford to take that risk (at least not in the early rounds of the draft) as all of their top picks need to contribute sooner than later. Jerry Jones evidently felt the Cowboys are in a position where they can take such a gamble.

Agreed 100%. It would have been nice to be able to "sacrifice" a draft pick to take Smith or Jack. No way could the Giants do it in 2016. BTW: I believe the Cows still need a QB.
they potentially wasted a 2nd round pick
Rocky369 : 6/29/2016 11:43 am : link
in this year's draft. and they saved a top pick by getting Collins last year. I'd say they are ahead of the game.

Just Sayin...
If u were going to take a chance at their pick...
allstarjim : 6/29/2016 1:15 pm : link
You could've taken Myles Jack, who has a chance at playing this season, and whose injury isn't quite as career threatening. The Cowboys could've had Ramsey and Jack, and now they have neither, and the Jaguars do. The Cowboys will watch Jaguars' games for a long time and think, "what might have been."

Couple with the fact your QB is in his twilight, and you are in clear win-now mode... their draft was hilariously bad.

That's the part that makes it a bad pick. They have a window now to win the SB while Romo is still playing (assuming he can stay healthy). That's not the time to gamble a 2nd round pick on a player likely to miss at least all of the upcoming season. Especially with your top 2 pass rushers already suspended for 4 games.

A gamble on Jack, who can play now but may have issues down the line, at that point would've made sense.
Hard to argue that potentially getting the best player
joeinpa : 6/29/2016 2:56 pm : link
Of the draft in second round is a bad move.

When you put it that way, with no context, yeah.
I hope the kid heals
old man : 6/29/2016 3:11 pm : link
and can play, for his sake.
If he does, so be it.
If Dallas benefits, like someone said, high-risk, potentially high reward.
Though wouldn't that nerve still be susceptible to damage, given the impact of an NFL football hit?
If he was 100% healthy when he was drafted
arniefez : 6/29/2016 3:52 pm : link
the odds of him playing 10 years in NFL would be very low. At this point any NFL player that makes it past 7 years is extraordinary.

I have to disagree... I hope he heals, of course, I'm not a monster. But I hope he can't play. I mean, I still want him to be a bust... he's getting paid regardless, so.

Nope. Or was a major gamble for Dallas. They passed on defensive help for a RB and then drafted a guy shimming never play. That's not a good gamble when your QB is about as healthy as my 83 old dad.

If it was Tenn w 12 picks sure it's a better gamble but for Dallas who is in a win now mode it's stupid and nothing the kid does in 2017 or beyond will change that. Maybe Romo proves me wrong but him staying healthy enough to win a SB Is a huge maybe. Not to mention their so is basically Dez and the running game. Witten won't be playing much longer either

The Cowboys took a big chance on Roger Staubach ...
Manny in CA : 6/30/2016 12:08 am : link

Who had a military obligation during Vietnam, and eventually won big. They probably remember that. Smith, even if takes 2-3 years is a terrific player.
Crapping on the Elliot pick at 4 is silly at this point.
BlueLou : 6/30/2016 6:09 am : link
He was easily a top 10 worthy guy and his fit for Dallas is damn near perfect.

As for taking Smith (with Myles Jack still available) that's a weird gamble. Honestly I hope the kid recovers to live a normal life but I could care less if he never plays in the NFL. Poetic justice for what I see as a shady arrangement to land Lael Collins as an UDFA.
There aren't many people who thought that Smith
Ira : 6/30/2016 6:12 am : link
would play in 2016. The question is and has been since the injury - will he play in subsequent seasons.

Collins agent told the teams not to draft him, and no team did.

Collins gave Dallas the first visit in free agency. Dallas put on a "full court press" to sign Collins. This is a normal part of business. Denver did it with Demarcus Ware and Peyton Manning. Washington did it this year with Josh Norman, sending a private jet and even letting him fly it briefly.

Collins was a Dallas fan growing up and signed with Dallas.

I don't see the shady. Where is the shady?
