I think we all knew this was a forgone conclusion but the fact that he hasn't had significant improvement yet is alarming.

I'm told #Cowboys No. 2 pick @thejaylonsmith has experienced no significant improvement in injured nerve so far. Playing 2016 seems unlikely
I'm still very happy with Shepard though :)

Agreed it could end up being a steal or a thrown away pick. I wasn't happy when the pick was made because I like Smith and IF he returns to form they got an unbelievable steal in the 2nd round.
#Cowboys confident in @thejaylonsmith eventually playing. "He's going to have a 10-year career; we just don't know when it will start."
I'm not a Dr, but I don't think its a stretch to think that the surgeon performing the surgery and getting a first hand look at the damage is likely to have a more thorough understanding of what lies ahead compared to someone just reviewing MRIs, etc.
The flip side could also be true too though. The Dr performing the surgery is emotionally invested in the athletes recovery and could be overly confident in his capabilities as a Dr and the ability to make a full recovery.
Everyone knows how good Jaylon was but no one knows how good he will be or when he will even be able to take the field.

the best player in the entire draft. I think it's a worthwhile gamble in the 2nd round. Will be hard to judge Dallas on this pick until the 2017 season.

Is it really a "steal" if they only get 3 years out of him before he hits FA? Even assuming he eventually gets back to his high level of play, do you really think that's going to happen immediately after missing a full season? I'd guess best case is 2.5 seasons of "pro-bowl level" play (pre-FA).
I had a short laughable debate with my lone Cowboys fan friend about this. I literally stopped the debate after 10 seconds because there's no point arguing this. Glad I did. Right the Cowboys know everything and the rest of the league is lost. Keep on believing....
If we are having this conversation before training camp of 2017, then there is a problem. Otherwise it's wait and see.
Agreed 100%. It would have been nice to be able to "sacrifice" a draft pick to take Smith or Jack. No way could the Giants do it in 2016. BTW: I believe the Cows still need a QB.
Couple with the fact your QB is in his twilight, and you are in clear win-now mode... their draft was hilariously bad.

That's the part that makes it a bad pick. They have a window now to win the SB while Romo is still playing (assuming he can stay healthy). That's not the time to gamble a 2nd round pick on a player likely to miss at least all of the upcoming season. Especially with your top 2 pass rushers already suspended for 4 games.
A gamble on Jack, who can play now but may have issues down the line, at that point would've made sense.
When you put it that way, with no context, yeah.
If he does, so be it.
If Dallas benefits, like someone said, high-risk, potentially high reward.
Though wouldn't that nerve still be susceptible to damage, given the impact of an NFL football hit?

I have to disagree... I hope he heals, of course, I'm not a monster. But I hope he can't play. I mean, I still want him to be a bust... he's getting paid regardless, so.
Definitely not me.
Definitely not me.
+1

Nope. Or was a major gamble for Dallas. They passed on defensive help for a RB and then drafted a guy shimming never play. That's not a good gamble when your QB is about as healthy as my 83 old dad.
If it was Tenn w 12 picks sure it's a better gamble but for Dallas who is in a win now mode it's stupid and nothing the kid does in 2017 or beyond will change that. Maybe Romo proves me wrong but him staying healthy enough to win a SB Is a huge maybe. Not to mention their so is basically Dez and the running game. Witten won't be playing much longer either

Who had a military obligation during Vietnam, and eventually won big. They probably remember that. Smith, even if takes 2-3 years is a terrific player.
As for taking Smith (with Myles Jack still available) that's a weird gamble. Honestly I hope the kid recovers to live a normal life but I could care less if he never plays in the NFL. Poetic justice for what I see as a shady arrangement to land Lael Collins as an UDFA.

Collins agent told the teams not to draft him, and no team did.
Collins gave Dallas the first visit in free agency. Dallas put on a "full court press" to sign Collins. This is a normal part of business. Denver did it with Demarcus Ware and Peyton Manning. Washington did it this year with Josh Norman, sending a private jet and even letting him fly it briefly.
Collins was a Dallas fan growing up and signed with Dallas.
I don't see the shady. Where is the shady?
