This is shaping up to be a disaster of an olympics. The biggest reason is a political mess there with the President impeached in May and her temporary replacement, Michel Temer is under investigation for a separate scandal. This has eliminated any kind of help coming from Brazil itself for the Rio games (which are the responsibility of the Rio the state)
Unsafe water in the area designated for offshore games with drug resistant super bacteria usually found in medical waste.
Crime and murder rate that is horrendous (Swedish sailing coach had to hide in a boat he was fueling while a running gun battle between police and drug cartel members happened all around him).
Rio's Mayor issues an executive order for more emergency funding because """severe difficulties in the provision of essential public services and can even cause a total breakdown in public security, health, education, mobility and environmental management,""". Problem with this is that no one knows where the money will come from.
Police and Fireman claiming they may not be able to respond crimes due to lack of money for fuel and funds.
Acting Gov even went so far as declaring:

First-world countries don't need the hassle, and third-and second-world countries bribe better.
LA doesn't deserve an Olympics. The city doesn't know how to address the housing crisis here, and Skid Row has somehow gotten worse. It's a joke that the Mayor is looking for these photo op events, when they can't take care of their own backyard.
Surely the local prostitutes will charge upwards of 1,000 R$ which is about $300 USD and 3 or 4 times the regular rate.
I live in Sao Paulo State, this country is an absolute mess right now. Every night we turn on the national news channel Globo and its one corruption charge and scandal reported after another for the past few months.
I was offered tickets for free by sponsoring companies here to several events at the games including the opening ceremony and turned them down.
And the reality is no one in this country cares about the sports in the Olympic games (including the Triple A soccer)... At least during the World Cup the natives were occupied with the "real futebol" matches and there was a festive and familiar mood for most - including the "banditos", which remained relatively calm.
My advise is to stay away.

Depends on the event. Inside a stadium I don't think the risk would be substantially larger, but no way in hell would I want to run a marathon or ride in a 20k bicycle race.
You have to think about security for your living quarters, getting to and from events, leaving & returning to the compound, etc. It just seems like a terror group would be shooting fish in a barrel there. If you look at the OP, you can see the whole country has some serious issues with no resolution in sight.
If security is as bad as some say, getting explosives into a large basically unguarded stadium would not be very hard. With the sheer devastation that would cause, I'd think terrorists would be spanking their monkeys to get it done.
The real issue is about the rising crime rate in Rio/Brazil and its not only about getting your watch or Iphone stolen, its about having your child stolen, and/or your life.
The bad guys are now quite desperate, dangerous without consideration for human life values and really under policed... Don't fear Zika, but do fear the Bandito's.

Personally, I think a tourist for the game would be fine in the Olympic Village area.....but if they veer outside the tourist spots to "explore" the city of Rio, their chances of being in serious danger is very sever.

It is winter here in Brazil with temperatures ranging from 50-75F daily in Sao Paulo and Rio now. I have not seen a mosquito in 1 month, perhaps by August it warms a bit as winter comes to an end.

"It's all the water from the toilets and the showers and whatever people put down their sinks, all mixed up, and it's going out into the beach waters. Those kinds of things would be shut down immediately if found here," he said, referring to the U.S.

Bill, as per my previous post - I have not seen a mosquito in one month down here (I have been bitten hundreds of times earlier this year and still posting on BBI) and it is winter here so the Zika threat is not nearly as high like in December/January.

If you are pregnant, you definitely should not go. No question it's a health threat to you. If you are not pregnant, then the chance of you giving birth to a microcephalic baby is relatively low. Absolutely do not have unprotected sex for 3 months after you return. Follow these simple rules, and yeah, it's dumb to worry about it.
Now, if you are planning on moving to Brazil and starting a family, then I would be concerned.
If you want to worry about mosquitos, I'd worry more about getting Dengue
