This is shaping up to be a disaster of an olympics. The biggest reason is a political mess there with the President impeached in May and her temporary replacement, Michel Temer is under investigation for a separate scandal. This has eliminated any kind of help coming from Brazil itself for the Rio games (which are the responsibility of the Rio the state)
Unsafe water in the area designated for offshore games with drug resistant super bacteria usually found in medical waste.
Crime and murder rate that is horrendous (Swedish sailing coach had to hide in a boat he was fueling while a running gun battle between police and drug cartel members happened all around him).
Rio's Mayor issues an executive order for more emergency funding because """severe difficulties in the provision of essential public services and can even cause a total breakdown in public security, health, education, mobility and environmental management,""". Problem with this is that no one knows where the money will come from.
Police and Fireman claiming they may not be able to respond crimes due to lack of money for fuel and funds.
Acting Gov even went so far as declaring:
""""Dornelles said that without the bailout money, the state could only afford to cover the expenses of the police force for a few more days.
"The police fleet runs the risk of stopping. We managed to stretch the finances and we'll only last until the end of the week," Dornelles said.""
Zika Virus
A bunch of venues and living qtrs that will not be ready for use.
Doping Scandal involving Brazil only testing lab.
A transportation mess that was supposed to have been greatly improved a year ago, and yet has had hardly anything done to it.
This is turning out to be a scandal that could change completely how Olympic sites are chosen in the future

The only people for whom this isn't terrible are those who have already lined their pockets. The fact that this is occurring two years after the disaster that was Sochi is telling you that something needs to give. They need to consider having semi-permanent venues for hosting, or perhaps to parcel out individual events to cities around the world instead of the entire Games.
doubt this will make a difference
Was just going to post this.
If there is this much civil unrest and they clearly aren't prepared, how tight can their security possibly be?
I'd stay far, far away from this impending disaster.
My thoughts exactly.
As an athlete, even after all the training, I think I would pass on these games. There are several issues that could potentially affect an athlete's health, safety, and comfort.
Do STDs count?
I disagree. We heard there was plenty wrong with Sochi.

This is the defining moment in the lives of many of these athletes. I don't see many of them passing because of these concerns.
That's OK. The numbered accounts for the IOC members in the Caymans are safe.
IOC leadership needs to be scoured out with high pressure hoses and bleach. Brazil is too inept to even build sufficient water treatment for it's own people.

Some of them will also get significant sponsorship deals out of it.
Sending it to a 3rd world country, you get this.
First-world countries don't need the hassle, and third-and second-world countries bribe better.

How appropriate that Ron Mexico asked this question. Well played!
I have always heard that there is a lot of screwing going on at the
Olympics. It's not like the athletes will be running wild in the countryside, but their has to be an inherent risk. Wonder if wrapping it up helps.

The olympics are a disgusting joke in general. Stopped being about sports and integrity a long long time again.
First-world countries don't need the hassle, and third-and second-world countries bribe better.
If you parked them in or near a major city, they'd have most of the accommodations and most of the venues as it is, especially if it was every four years.
Not a bad idea especially given that once built the venues will be used on a continuous cycle. Most of the time the Olympics are a loser as whole due to venues never being used again in that capacity
You would have to choose a recently used site, and would at least have to postpone them for a year.
Valid point, could offset much of that by making it major training facilities in the off years
Terrorists will have a field day with easy pickings at this event. What a disaster!

Depends on the event. Inside a stadium I don't think the risk would be substantially larger, but no way in hell would I want to run a marathon or ride in a 20k bicycle race.

Fair point. Do they make mud flaps for sail boats?
Pity the rowers.

You can be assured the IOC will be bringing in top security teams from around the world. The venues will be very safe. IF you can GET to the venue alive, that is.....

Do yourself a favor and google Greek Olympic Structures - and see what level of disrepair those fairly recent buildings are in. Just another reason why the Olympics don't do the host countries any favors, expensive infrastructure built for basically a single use in most instances.
holyyyy shit

The 2014 World Cup was a big failure for Brazil financially
No. The 2004 Olympics and the massive overspending to build facilities, followed by their decay and destruction in the following years, cost Greece billions and was a partial contributor to their financial meltdown

But that would not be the case if its the permanent location for the summer games, not a one-off deal.

Depends. If it creates 1 featherbed job for each job requiring work then it might not be cost effective.

LA doesn't deserve an Olympics. The city doesn't know how to address the housing crisis here, and Skid Row has somehow gotten worse. It's a joke that the Mayor is looking for these photo op events, when they can't take care of their own backyard.
Surely the local prostitutes will charge upwards of 1,000 R$ which is about $300 USD and 3 or 4 times the regular rate.
I live in Sao Paulo State, this country is an absolute mess right now. Every night we turn on the national news channel Globo and its one corruption charge and scandal reported after another for the past few months.
I was offered tickets for free by sponsoring companies here to several events at the games including the opening ceremony and turned them down.
And the reality is no one in this country cares about the sports in the Olympic games (including the Triple A soccer)... At least during the World Cup the natives were occupied with the "real futebol" matches and there was a festive and familiar mood for most - including the "banditos", which remained relatively calm.
My advise is to stay away.

You have to think about security for your living quarters, getting to and from events, leaving & returning to the compound, etc. It just seems like a terror group would be shooting fish in a barrel there. If you look at the OP, you can see the whole country has some serious issues with no resolution in sight.
If security is as bad as some say, getting explosives into a large basically unguarded stadium would not be very hard. With the sheer devastation that would cause, I'd think terrorists would be spanking their monkeys to get it done.
The real issue is about the rising crime rate in Rio/Brazil and its not only about getting your watch or Iphone stolen, its about having your child stolen, and/or your life.
The bad guys are now quite desperate, dangerous without consideration for human life values and really under policed... Don't fear Zika, but do fear the Bandito's.
I really had no idea it was this bad. The IOC is a bunch of assholes.

Brazilian authorities then decided to ramping up physical security. Around 47,000 police officers and 38,000 members of the armed forces will be deployed during the Games. This is more than twice the security contingent for the 2012 London Olympics, and Rio is likely to be the most militarized Games on record.
The cash-strapped Brazilian government allocated $100 million to the Ministry of Justice to bolster its security preparations; although they stopped paying their police and firefighter a month in advance of the games just to have the fund to staff security during the games.
Personally, I think a tourist for the game would be fine in the Olympic Village area.....but if they veer outside the tourist spots to "explore" the city of Rio, their chances of being in serious danger is very sever.
And not caring....

It is winter here in Brazil with temperatures ranging from 50-75F daily in Sao Paulo and Rio now. I have not seen a mosquito in 1 month, perhaps by August it warms a bit as winter comes to an end.
The corruption, greed, and selfishness of a select few is causing suffering, pain and death in many of these venues hosting mega-games/tournaments. And ironically enough it always seems that it's the people who never played any sports who are doing the most damage. They view sport as merely a vehicle to exploit for their own personal gain. Thomas Bach, Sepp Blatter, NFL owners, country heads of sport, etc - they're virtually all the same.
Their involvement in the Olympics, soccer, and the NFL more closely resembles SPECTRE than Sport.
Meanwhile, it appears that several of Rio’s major sewage treatment facilities weren’t adequately doing their jobs, leading to mass pollution and accusations of fraud. One expert estimates that only about 20 to 30 percent of Rio’s sewage actually receives treatment.
What about that AP independent tests on the water?
An AP analysis of water quality revealed dangerously high levels of viruses and bacteria from human sewage in Olympic and Paralympic venues — results that alarmed international experts and dismayed competitors training in Rio, some of whom have already fallen ill with fevers, vomiting and diarrhea.
Test results found high counts of active and infectious human adenoviruses, which multiply in the intestinal and respiratory tracts of people. These are viruses that are known to cause respiratory and digestive illnesses, including explosive diarrhea and vomiting, but can also lead to more serious heart, brain and other diseases.
Extreme water pollution is common in Brazil, where the majority of sewage is not treated. Raw waste runs through open-air ditches to streams and rivers that feed the Olympic water sites.
As a result, Olympic athletes are almost certain to come into contact with disease-causing viruses that in some tests measured up to 1.7 million times the level of what would be considered hazardous on a Southern California beach.
"What you have there is basically raw sewage," said John Griffith, a marine biologist at the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project. Griffith examined the protocols, methodology and results of the AP tests.
"It's all the water from the toilets and the showers and whatever people put down their sinks, all mixed up, and it's going out into the beach waters. Those kinds of things would be shut down immediately if found here," he said, referring to the U.S.
More than 10,000 athletes from 205 nations are expected to compete in next year's Olympics. Nearly 1,400 of them will be sailing in the waters near Marina da Gloria in Guanabara Bay, swimming off Copacabana beach, and canoeing and rowing on the brackish waters of the Rodrigo de Freitas Lake.

This is a good post, but the cesspool of waste and thieves inside the Brazilian government is unprecedented (its a free for all grab) and something most American citizens can not comprehend.
The likes of Blatter and Bach are amateurs compared to what goes on in Brazil.

I've had many a dealing with Petrobras in my line of work - here and abroad - and I've rarely felt like I was in the lion's den as I did with them. Most of the people I was dealing with years ago are now in prison or have escaped with their millions.
But the other stuff is real and should make you run away.
But the other stuff is real and should make you run away.
So, it's dumb to worry about a virus that can cause a horrific birth defect? Really?
I'd say it's dumb to write off a significant health threat but, that's just me. Enjoy Zika?
Bill, as per my previous post - I have not seen a mosquito in one month down here (I have been bitten hundreds of times earlier this year and still posting on BBI) and it is winter here so the Zika threat is not nearly as high like in December/January.

The people pulling out because of Zika are dumb, IMO. That's overblown if you're even a moderate intelligent person in how you go about life.

The Zika topic and impact to the general population is not main stream here in Brazil at this time and quite frankly not a concern.

Sure it's not. You keep believing that. I'll belive in, you know, what actual medical professionals say.

If planning to get pregnant or are pregnant, don't go.
Or maybe his will help chicken little.

Read my previous post - you are wrong. I am here, we that live here don't feel threatened at all - actually the topic in my family has not come up for about 3 months.
Nothing reported on the news.
If you are pregnant, you definitely should not go. No question it's a health threat to you. If you are not pregnant, then the chance of you giving birth to a microcephalic baby is relatively low. Absolutely do not have unprotected sex for 3 months after you return. Follow these simple rules, and yeah, it's dumb to worry about it.
Now, if you are planning on moving to Brazil and starting a family, then I would be concerned.
If you want to worry about mosquitos, I'd worry more about getting Dengue
I'd frankly be frightened to go to the Olympics this year. And i'm a pretty hearty well-traveled ignorant American.
And I find it a bit odd that this year's Olympics doesn't seem to be promoted here in the US ad nauseum. I know the Swimming trials are going on this week but other than that I haven't heard much about it or seen the dozens of commercials we usually see about the games.
