NFT: So do the Summer Olympics happen?

montanagiant : 6/29/2016 11:20 am
This is shaping up to be a disaster of an olympics. The biggest reason is a political mess there with the President impeached in May and her temporary replacement, Michel Temer is under investigation for a separate scandal. This has eliminated any kind of help coming from Brazil itself for the Rio games (which are the responsibility of the Rio the state)

Unsafe water in the area designated for offshore games with drug resistant super bacteria usually found in medical waste.

Crime and murder rate that is horrendous (Swedish sailing coach had to hide in a boat he was fueling while a running gun battle between police and drug cartel members happened all around him).

Rio's Mayor issues an executive order for more emergency funding because """severe difficulties in the provision of essential public services and can even cause a total breakdown in public security, health, education, mobility and environmental management,""". Problem with this is that no one knows where the money will come from.

Police and Fireman claiming they may not be able to respond crimes due to lack of money for fuel and funds.
Acting Gov even went so far as declaring:
""""Dornelles said that without the bailout money, the state could only afford to cover the expenses of the police force for a few more days.
"The police fleet runs the risk of stopping. We managed to stretch the finances and we'll only last until the end of the week," Dornelles said.""

Zika Virus

A bunch of venues and living qtrs that will not be ready for use.

Doping Scandal involving Brazil only testing lab.

A transportation mess that was supposed to have been greatly improved a year ago, and yet has had hardly anything done to it.

This is turning out to be a scandal that could change completely how Olympic sites are chosen in the future

terrible for Rio who shelled out billions they didn't have to spare to get ready for this, to the detriment of actual spending priorities. Terrible for the athletes who have been killing themselves for years and years to get to this moment, only to have to worry about health and public safety because the corrupt fuckwads of the IOC received enough graft from the city to make it worth their while to pick it.

The only people for whom this isn't terrible are those who have already lined their pockets. The fact that this is occurring two years after the disaster that was Sochi is telling you that something needs to give. They need to consider having semi-permanent venues for hosting, or perhaps to parcel out individual events to cities around the world instead of the entire Games.

Was just going to post this.

If there is this much civil unrest and they clearly aren't prepared, how tight can their security possibly be?

I'd stay far, far away from this impending disaster.

My thoughts exactly.
It will happen
Matt M. : 6/29/2016 11:47 am : link
and the multitude of problems in the original post should amount to at least some actual logistical nightmares that impact the games.

As an athlete, even after all the training, I think I would pass on these games. There are several issues that could potentially affect an athlete's health, safety, and comfort.

This is the defining moment in the lives of many of these athletes. I don't see many of them passing because of these concerns.
Too much TV money for it not to happen

That's OK. The numbered accounts for the IOC members in the Caymans are safe.

Ten Ton Hammer : 6/29/2016 11:58 am : link
like Sochi, then Brazil is happening.

IOC leadership needs to be scoured out with high pressure hoses and bleach. Brazil is too inept to even build sufficient water treatment for it's own people.

How appropriate that Ron Mexico asked this question. Well played!

I have always heard that there is a lot of screwing going on at the
Olympics. It's not like the athletes will be running wild in the countryside, but their has to be an inherent risk. Wonder if wrapping it up helps.
I can't wait for the following Olympics:

If you parked them in or near a major city, they'd have most of the accommodations and most of the venues as it is, especially if it was every four years.

Not a bad idea especially given that once built the venues will be used on a continuous cycle. Most of the time the Olympics are a loser as whole due to venues never being used again in that capacity

You would have to choose a recently used site, and would at least have to postpone them for a year.
there should be either one permanent site
Greg from LI : 6/29/2016 12:20 pm : link
Or a limited pool of host cities that have the existing facilities and infrastructure needed to host.
They Olympics will happen
ZogZerg : 6/29/2016 12:21 pm : link
They'll make due.

Wait till the IOC and FIFA
B in ALB : 6/29/2016 12:22 pm : link
get together to re-appropriate the World Cup and have the Winter Olympics in Qatar. That'll be a fuckin hoot!
LA just help the Special Olympics World Games
Stan in LA : 6/29/2016 12:23 pm : link
Last year. All the facilities are ready to go. If anyone could do it on a moment's notice LA can. A switch would never happen, and if it did they would postpone them a year, but as someone said too much money tied up in these Games, so for better or worse they will go on in Rio.
LA just 'had'...
Stan in LA : 6/29/2016 12:24 pm : link
.
That will never happen until
AP in Halfmoon : 6/29/2016 12:25 pm : link
host cities stop competing for the location. There's too much money to be made under the table for this to change in our lifetime.
The problem with Greece and moving them
njm : 6/29/2016 12:25 pm : link
Housing for the athletes. The rest of the venues should be available, but the housing is generally occupied after the games are over.

Valid point, could offset much of that by making it major training facilities in the off years

Depends on the event. Inside a stadium I don't think the risk would be substantially larger, but no way in hell would I want to run a marathon or ride in a 20k bicycle race.

You can be assured the IOC will be bringing in top security teams from around the world. The venues will be very safe. IF you can GET to the venue alive, that is.....
