NFT: Shark fishing.

What is the big attraction?

AP's post made me think of this

Now I don't mind catching 2-3 foot black tips as the are tasty.

I have caught some big ones and it's like reeling in the bottom.

Over the Memorial Day weekend I was on a 3 day Tortuga's trip with a bunch of buddies. I hooked into one and knew what it was in a few seconds. One of the big young guys asked if I wanted help when I looked at him. All yours if you want him.

1 1/2 hours later, the 8' hammerhead was along side the boat and cut loose.

Maybe it's just us old guys, but I like something that acts like it's fighting back.

What say you?

My uncle was a charter boat captain in Cape May

I used to go out on shark charters with him. It was a lot of work but we had some pretty good fights. When I was 15 my cousin and I caught a 636 lb hammerhead. Combined it took us about 2 hours to bring in switching on and off when we got tired.
15 is one thing

double teaming.

At 60 something I'd rather drink beer and watch'm work.

I caught a 7' bull last year and should have let the kid who's 17th birthday it was that day.

I wasn't sure it wasn't a big grouper was the only reason I didn't.

I once caught a

truck tire out of Freeport. That was as much as I could handle
I'll find your fish for 3...

But I'll catch him and kill him for 10.

Catching a shark is primal for a lot of people. Call it a rite of passage. Even the hour and a half fight was epic for that guy you were with. Add in lighter tackle spinning rods and they make for great family action (and easy money :) ) Those suckers can dump some line in a hurry and give spectacular jumps!

But yes, given the choice between big groupers and muttons or playing with sharks the eating fish win every time. Also, outside of a big mako or threasher on the east coast, let them grow. Most sharks take 10-20 years before they spawn. Many smaller sharks that are kept never reproduce. I'm a big fan of harvesting fish in a well regulated manner from the ocean, but let the sharkies go.

You're gonna

need a bigger boat

The guy I was with is in his early 40's and has caught plenty of big fish. Hell, we let the "young" guys bring in the big ones we can't eat.

They aren't included in the big fish pool.
Ha! Well in that case let him fight it,
BigBlue in Keys : 6/29/2016 9:39 pm : link
One less grouper bait in the water while you drop down. You're sure not at the Tortuga's for sharkin', or daysailin' for that matter. How was the bite otherwise? That can sure be a magical area.

On a side note my folks just moved down to New Port Richey (above Tampa). Wondering where/what to steer my dad to find some fish. Any guides to show him the ropes? Shoreline or bridges in that area? Thanks
Lucky me

A troll on my thread.
I would love to catch a huge hammerhead
EricJ : 6/29/2016 10:28 pm : link
like you described. Kinda like putting it on your bucket list as long as you can get quite a few quality pics to savor the moment.

However, I agree that I dont want to spend the time reeling in one of those every time I am out fishing. If I am fishing in your area of southwest FL, I would much rather get into some really good snook and tarpon action on top water lures.
I would rather catch a 10 lb largemouth

I live here and fish for a living. Not sure what I said that you think is trolling you?

Give me a tuna half the size any day

I have caught a few big blue sharks and a nice galapagos shark (also grey tipped reef shark it's called I think) in kauai last year. I would have much rather caught a yellowfin 1/2 the size.

Never fished for sharks willingly and probably never will.
sort of off topic

I just got done rewatching shark wranglers it ran like 5 or 6 years ago on history channel where ocearch I believe they were called caught tagged and released 40 great white sharks. Those guys were nuts. Awesome show if you haven't seen it.
Some really bizarre

I don't think he was referring to you as the troll, last night just before your post there was one from one of those just signed up trolls pushing some scam website. I'm assuming that's what he was referring to. Looks like that post was deleted though.

As for me here in NJ, I love the spring and fall striper fishing. So long as you pick through the bluefish that are also chasing the bunker. Then the sea bass and blackfish are fun as well, and great to eat.

That wasn't to you BigBlue in the keys.

We have talked before. That was meant for another thread.

My apologies if you got that impression.

in, well, Fort Myers so not familiar with that area of the state. 100 miles north of me. I'm sure someone from the Tampa contingent can help you out.

From Boca Grand pass down to Naples I can hook you up. Pun intended.
For the fun and challenge of it
AP in Halfmoon : 6/30/2016 9:07 am : link
I release almost all fish anyway so it's not about keeping them. The exception for me is if we're camping or a kid catches a keeper and wants to eat it.

If I had more time I would get serious about kayak shark fishing. It seems like a great adventure.
Pound for pound, they don't make 'em tougher than tog (blackfish)
jcn56 : 6/30/2016 9:12 am : link
They're small, I think the record goes to 14 pounds or so. But that 10 pound fish will pull your kayak like you just hooked into a big eye tuna.

The sharking is definitely fun, although my experience is limited to threshers and makos. The mako is good eats, although with enough mercury in it that you can accurately tell airborne temps with your junk for the next 3 weeks. The little hammerheads I used to get in the gulf near Howard Park outside of Clearwater were always a hoot too, and those fuckers would literally chase anything so all I needed was a couple of tins and some spare time.
My experience is limited to sand sharks
AP in Halfmoon : 6/30/2016 9:32 am : link
in the Carolina's fishing the surf. I'm primary a fresh water fisherman so shark fishing is exciting. Kids love it too.
Glad to hear it wasn't me CTC!

Always thought we had good interactions, us FL BBI'ers stick together. :)

AP good luck fishing with your son! Can't beat time fishing with your pop.

JCN the blackfish record is 28 lbs! Check out this slob caught out of Ocean city, Maryland. The boat is called "The Morning Star". They fish for HUGE 'tog, many times throwing back 10+ pounders. I fished with this guy a few times. One winter make a trip to this mecca of blackfish.

Sam's slob:
He's doesn't look very excited
AP in Halfmoon : 6/30/2016 10:42 am : link
thanks BigBlue, we'll be returning to Marathon later this year and I'll be sure to look you up this trip.
A trip to DE for some tog fishing has been on my radar for a long time
jcn56 : 6/30/2016 10:52 am : link
Unfortunately, I'm short the one thing I need to do it, time. Hell, I've got a boat sitting in my driveway and I haven't sniffed the water yet this year.
This thread is

Hilarious stuff

Go throw red paint on a grizzly bear."
