What is the big attraction?
AP's post made me think of this
Now I don't mind catching 2-3 foot black tips as the are tasty.
I have caught some big ones and it's like reeling in the bottom.
Over the Memorial Day weekend I was on a 3 day Tortuga's trip with a bunch of buddies. I hooked into one and knew what it was in a few seconds. One of the big young guys asked if I wanted help when I looked at him. All yours if you want him.
1 1/2 hours later, the 8' hammerhead was along side the boat and cut loose.
Maybe it's just us old guys, but I like something that acts like it's fighting back.
What say you?
At 60 something I'd rather drink beer and watch'm work.
I caught a 7' bull last year and should have let the kid who's 17th birthday it was that day.
I wasn't sure it wasn't a big grouper was the only reason I didn't.
But yes, given the choice between big groupers and muttons or playing with sharks the eating fish win every time. Also, outside of a big mako or threasher on the east coast, let them grow. Most sharks take 10-20 years before they spawn. Many smaller sharks that are kept never reproduce. I'm a big fan of harvesting fish in a well regulated manner from the ocean, but let the sharkies go.

The guy I was with is in his early 40's and has caught plenty of big fish. Hell, we let the "young" guys bring in the big ones we can't eat.
They aren't included in the big fish pool.
On a side note my folks just moved down to New Port Richey (above Tampa). Wondering where/what to steer my dad to find some fish. Any guides to show him the ropes? Shoreline or bridges in that area? Thanks
However, I agree that I dont want to spend the time reeling in one of those every time I am out fishing. If I am fishing in your area of southwest FL, I would much rather get into some really good snook and tarpon action on top water lures.
Hold your skirt down. Keep that Pussy private.

Never fished for sharks willingly and probably never will.
I don't think he was referring to you as the troll, last night just before your post there was one from one of those just signed up trolls pushing some scam website. I'm assuming that's what he was referring to. Looks like that post was deleted though.
As for me here in NJ, I love the spring and fall striper fishing. So long as you pick through the bluefish that are also chasing the bunker. Then the sea bass and blackfish are fun as well, and great to eat.
That wasn't to you BigBlue in the keys.
We have talked before. That was meant for another thread.
My apologies if you got that impression.
From Boca Grand pass down to Naples I can hook you up. Pun intended.
If I had more time I would get serious about kayak shark fishing. It seems like a great adventure.
The sharking is definitely fun, although my experience is limited to threshers and makos. The mako is good eats, although with enough mercury in it that you can accurately tell airborne temps with your junk for the next 3 weeks. The little hammerheads I used to get in the gulf near Howard Park outside of Clearwater were always a hoot too, and those fuckers would literally chase anything so all I needed was a couple of tins and some spare time.
AP good luck fishing with your son! Can't beat time fishing with your pop.
JCN the blackfish record is 28 lbs! Check out this slob caught out of Ocean city, Maryland. The boat is called "The Morning Star". They fish for HUGE 'tog, many times throwing back 10+ pounders. I fished with this guy a few times. One winter make a trip to this mecca of blackfish.
Sam's slob:
This is top of my bucket list
"Shark fishing from a kayak is light years beyond the type of awesome that you bunch of thumb-sucking PETA sheep could ever hope to achieve.
Go throw red paint on a grizzly bear."
