"I'd give my right arm to make it to the Olympics." is not a phrase South Americans are throwing around casually these days.

posted a similar article from The Huffington Post about this yesterday in the Rio thread. Gruesome. What a disaster.

look like paradise. Haha, I can't even believe anyone thought this was a good idea, including those who's pockets were greased.

To be fair, when the Games were awarded to Rio, Brasil was riding high--when the BRIC were part of the growth trajectory of the developed markets--this was all before Lula left office, crude price tanked, and Petrobras sank in a mire of corruption...that was then, and it seemed like a good idea at the time...and, yes, all those IOC pols with hands outstretched...

Hope all good with you
Nothing to see here

I think from an infrastructure standpoint

it was always a bad idea, same for Qatar in 2022 for the WC. Just makes no sense. I admit I haven't been up on what's going in on Brazil until the past month or two so I don't know the background of the selection process, but these countries should be awarded large events like this.

All is good here, hope the same for you. Looking forward to a weekend of Soccer starting today. Actually i'll make a thread on that now.

I was in Rio for New Years in 2010/2011 (f'ing awesome time by the way) and remember thinking that this place is not ready for the world cup much less the Olympics. the place we stayed (copacobana right on the beach) and where we hung out (emipnima and Lapa) were fine, but anywhere else is a shit hole and you didn't have to go very far to get there. like a block away from the main soccer stadium looked like shit and that's where the WC would be played.

now I'm sure they cleaned it up some from the time I was there to the WC and now the Olympics, but I couldn't believe that the place was awarded both events to host in the condition it was in. it would be like having it in SW DC before they started cleaning that area up (that's bad).
Someone should have screened City of God for those IOC crooks

Some people here should study the history of Brazil.

I have no idea why you posted that link on this thread. The concern on the Olympic games are very real. People should be nervous. It is not troll behavior to point out reality in Brazil.

Corruption, Zika, pollution, safety concerns, etc are not things to take lightly
