NFT: Need TV advice...

ShocknAwe80 : 6/30/2016 12:58 pm
Hey all. Recently moved into my first home and after doing a great deal of research I purchased a 70 inch Vizio M series. I had the tv calibrated and while it has a good picture it isn't all that great. There is significant motion blur on close ups of faces, especially in dark scenes. All the reviews online say how great the set is, but every review ends with "for the money!" Yesterday I spent some time at Best Buy talking with the head of the magnolia department and he strongly recommended the Sony xbr75850d
Which is currently 3,300... It is edge lit and doesn't have the full array led with local dimming that I read so much about. In doing my own research I have also read good things about the Samsung un70ku6300... I need advice. I am looking for a 70-75 inch 4K tv... Not looking to spend over 3,300. Would like to spend less as long as I don't sacrifice quality. Thanks in advance for all of your help. The tv is in a room that gets a lot of light during the day.
go projection at that size

LED just sucks, IMO, no matter how good the set. Motion blur and black levels are usually bad. Since you can't get a Plasma that big I'd go projection if you have the room for it. At half the cost you will have a much better picture.
I can't uconn
ShocknAwe80 : 6/30/2016 1:12 pm : link
The room is way too bright. It will never work
got ya
UConn4523 : 6/30/2016 1:17 pm : link
yeah they are great for basements. I'm in hold off mode, have my Plasma I love but its 55" from when I lived in my small NYC apartment. Now a house I definitely have the room for 70"+ but everything worth it is just so damn expensive. My plasma will look better than most of the LED sets outside of the top of the line stuff so i'm just going to wait. Can't do projection in this room either, just not enough room, but i'd love to one day in a bigger house.

Yeah I hear yah. I have my 7 year old Panasonic plasma 42 inch in my bedroom and the picture is incredible. But all of this doesn't help me now lmao. I need to get something to replace the Vizio that I'm returning.
would you consider a cheaper
UConn4523 : 6/30/2016 1:29 pm : link
stop gap set until OLED is affordable? That's what I'd do. Just get a bigass 4K from Vizio like the D series or an entry Sony/Samsung.
I already have theM series Vizio not going to downgrade
ShocknAwe80 : 6/30/2016 1:31 pm : link
Also don't want to wait. Want to get something I can enjoy now.
If you get a lot of light plasma sucks
Stan in LA : 6/30/2016 1:34 pm : link
But since it's a dead technology anyway go OLED and spend the extra. It makes plasma look like black and white with bad rabbit ears.
your only option is OLED
UConn4523 : 6/30/2016 1:39 pm : link
then, everything else is a waste of money, IMO. OLED is expensive as hell which is why I recommended waiting. Ignore Stan's advice as well. Anyone comparing 15 year old technology to something that just came out isn't giving you good advice or advice you don't already know.
I want to upgrade too

I have a 55" Samsung LED that I got just before SB XLII, but it's still has such a good picture and zero issues with it in 9 years I can't simply bring myself to replace it unless I see a 70" or greater with as good or better picture at a good price.

haven't seen it yet.
my only advise
superspynyg : 6/30/2016 1:45 pm : link
is since this should be a tv that you have for 10+ years I would spend the money and get a top rated one.

My wife had a 42" Sony Bravia for 10 years. Its way too small for our house but its picture is still great. We are saving for a new tv and will definitely pay for quality.
plasma

Stan, not all plasmas were created equal. I'm going to cry when my Pioneer Elite goes. 10 years running so far and looks good as new.
Fixed your post

The Sony was recommended due to my price point which isn't changing because I don't want to get a divorce. So I am asking the best tv that I can get for around 3 grand.
Do you HAVE to do 70" or more?
Johnny5 : 6/30/2016 4:34 pm : link
I have been looking recently as well, I don't think you'll find a better TV than that SONY 75" Triluminos at that price... That is a nice TV. That said... I am holding off for OLED to drop in price. Also I will probably go smaller... I was drooling over the LG 65" OLED. That is the best picture and motion I have ever seen on a TV. Actually most of these TVs are too good for CGI now, it makes any animation done poorly really look like shit... lol
The Vizio 58" 4k from Best Buy

is a great TV. If still available, they price-matched Costco at $699. Love it.

And we have a winner!!!
65 inch, under 3K. OLED. - ( New Window )
I know, I know 65 does not equal 70 but

Close enough!
Reading multiple things on line that oled is being faded out
ShocknAwe80 : 6/30/2016 5:14 pm : link
There is a reason LG is the only manufacturer putting them out.

That LG OLED is an awesome TV! The higher end SONY 75" than the one you listed is probably almost as good as the LG but it's over your price range (I think it's around 4000). That is a big ass TV... lol
The higher end Sony is actually 6g
ShocknAwe80 : 6/30/2016 10:33 pm : link
If it was 4 I would buy it
Avoid niceelectronics like the plague

OLED isn't being faded out, it's just hard to make and therefore not profitable. LG loses money on their bigger TVs. Most cellphones use OLED screens, it's not going anywhere. As the technology matures, more manufacturers will jump in.

OLEDs are the best performing TVs on the market right now.
