Granderson (calf) is not in the lineup Thursday against the Cubs, Adam Rubin of ESPN reports.
Granderson was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup as he continued to feel the lingering effects of a slight calf strain and he'll get another day off Thursday. The 35-year-old was used as a pinch-hitter in Wednesday's contest though, so it appears as though the ailment is relatively minor and he figures to be available in a similar capacity Thursday. Brandon Nimmo will slide over to right field in his place, while Kelly Johnson will draw the start in left field.

Grandy - ( New Window )

BINGHAMTON 13, ALTOONA 4: Jose Reyes went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored while logging eight innings at third base. Rehabbing Juan Lagares was 2-for-6 with a triple and two RBIs. He threw out a runner at the plate and played the full game in center field.
I hate d'Arnaud in the 8-hole
allstarjim : 6/30/2016 4:55 pm : link
I think KJ should be there, veteran hitter with good plate discipline. D'Arnaud is a better hitter than this, and he needs to see hit-able pitches to get him back to where he needs to be. Other than that, I'm glad they put Nimmo at the top of the lineup. I've been impressed with his approach at the plate.

trade deadline from Sandy - per Rubin

Here was Sandy Alderson's sobering language with respect to the trade deadline: "What I've said before is that there is no single acquisition, at least that I can see, that's going to change what's transpired over the last two months. It's going to have to come from within. There may be things that we can do that can improve the team. We've done various things over the last couple of months to try to improve the team. Certainly we'll be monitoring the market. But I don't believe right now that an acquisition is going to make a big difference for us. We get Juan Lagares back, [Jose] Reyes makes a contribution, who knows where little marginal improvements -- hitting with men in scoring position across the board -- those are the kinds of things that are going to make a difference over the next three months."

Agree.
And all Loney has proved
ZGiants98 : 6/30/2016 5:41 pm : link
is he is consistently average. You know what your going to get from him and it aint great. TDA's bat over 4 months last year was "special". Is he proven necessarily yet? No. Can he stay healthy for a season? Not yet. But at least there's a pretty good chance he offers more than the retreads we are throwing out there currently in the middle of the lineup.

With his injury concerns, I think he ends up being more of a dh/c/1b option for an AL team... unless of course they make the DH league wide

TDA? Maybe. His injuries have come mostly from non catching stuff though. Hit in the hand with a pitch.... Sliding awkwardly into home base.... Would happen if he's a DH or whatever. The shoulder may have been caused from throwing but it appears to be good now. We dodged a bullet there. TDA was actually considered a good catcher in the minors and somebody that was an "athlete". After watching Plawecki back there Im confident that TDA is the better catcher. Its also almost impossible to find offense at C so if there's even a chance he can stay healthy, Id prefer they left him there.
And I agree with Sandy...
ZGiants98 : 6/30/2016 5:49 pm : link
One acquisition isn't going to change this team.

We either need guys to get healthy, get guys to start performing up to their abilities, and start hitting with runners in scoring position, ect. or we are sunk. Mike Trout isn't fixing this team.

At this point I just want to get to the all-star break in one piece and hopefully regroup. This is just a brutal stretch and we are just getting brained right now. I dont see anything getting better through this weekend. Hopefully we win a couple and the Marlins and Nats lose a couple. Best we can hope for.
Yeah, man..
arcarsenal : 6/30/2016 7:26 pm : link
It's tough. Just so frustrating. At least Matz kind of regrouped after the Bryant HR.

The Cubs lineup compared to ours is crazy though. There's such a big gap and we really don't even have a pitching advantage. Lackey's 3.29 ERA is the highest in the entire rotation. Lester and Arrieta have been brilliant and even Hendricks and Hammel have been pretty good.
I give you guys
RodneyHamp : 6/30/2016 7:34 pm : link

ZGiants98 : 6/30/2016 7:35 pm : link
Russell playing good defense Soler, Baez, and Russell have all pretty much been busts or at least haven't lived up to expectations yet. All of them are below average offensively. Pitchers like Hammel are playing WAY over their head. Actually the entire rotation is far exceeding career averages. Maybe its just their year. I dont know...
It has way more to do with mostly the entire roster
PhiPsi125 : 6/30/2016 7:38 pm : link
underperforming rather than being injured. I'm tired of the "injury" excuse. We have two starters that are on the DL. And both weren't very good when they went out. Most teams have dinged up players. We just collectively suck.

But the players love playing for Terry, so we have that.
We could have used Zobrist on this team bigggggg time.
arcarsenal : 6/30/2016 7:39 pm : link
That probably meant no Cespedes, though.. so it is what it is.
Well those two players
ZGiants98 : 6/30/2016 7:43 pm : link
were wRC+ 130 guys last year. Im dying for Sandy to just add ONE guy like that to the lineup at the deadline. I mean Lucroy is a 125 guy currently. Somebody like Lucroy is probably helping this lineup and adding two Lucroys almost assuredly would. The rest of the lineup as banged up to. Granderson is out now, Lagares, Walker's been nicked up....

But you're right. The young stars heading in were Harvey, deGrom, Conforto.... Underperformance by players we were counting on isn't helping anything obviously either.

Its just one big compounded mess.
Oh give me a break.
arcarsenal : 6/30/2016 7:44 pm : link
Duda, Wright and Lagares are all on the DL.. d'Arnaud missed 57 games, Flores missed like 15 games, Granderson is out of the lineup now and is "day to day", Syndergaard and Matz both have bone spurs, Wheeler had a setback.. but yeah, nobody has been hurt. Everyone's just underperforming.
Matz actually looking pretty good...
ZGiants98 : 6/30/2016 7:51 pm : link
Too bad two runs is like 787 with this lineup right now.
.
arcarsenal : 6/30/2016 7:56 pm : link
What I'm looking for with Matz is what happens around the 5th inning or so. Because we've seen this before where he's look pretty good for the first few innings and then he just loses it completely.
This is going
Stufftherun : 6/30/2016 7:58 pm : link
beyond underperforming and I do agree to some extent with PhiPsi which is to say, there's no rational way you could have counted on DW to put up big numbers, stay healthy or both and everyone knows Duda is the definition of inconsistent and he did have a brutal start to the season.

They're starting to look like the NY Football Giants during the injury riddled seasons ...down, apathetic, grasping at straws and lacking any real leadership. Someone needs to start tossing some chairs against the clubhouse walls or turning over tables! This club is lifeless and pathetic!
I certainly never expected Wright to put up
ZGiants98 : 6/30/2016 8:02 pm : link
"big" numbers. Just do exactly what he was doing over the first couple months while he was here. Maybe strikeout a little less. Guy was hitting for pop. Had a .350 OBP. wRC+ 120 (133 last year) . People were all over him in April... I would kill for that kind of production at the top of the order again.... I was hoping we could baby him and Flores could fill in admirably. It didn't work out. Duda was the big blow though.

The were just talking about it...
ZGiants98 : 6/30/2016 8:03 pm : link
Cespedes is now the one guy in the lineup opposing teams won't let beat them. This team needs a power lefty threat protecting him in the worse way imaginable IMO.
I wish they would line their lineup like
ZGiants98 : 6/30/2016 8:05 pm : link
Nimmo
Walker
Cespedes
Granderson
TDA
Cabrera

when they could.... I hate all these soft ass players in the middle right now...

Did I say "nobody has been hurt"? Yeah, I'm pretty sure I didn't. But go on.

Wright? We've been through this. Most people would have been thrilled to be league average stuff and 100 games out of him. Underperforming before he went out.

Duda, aka the streakiest player in the history of baseball to everyone not named Zgiants....underperforming before he went out.

TdA...lol...don't even get me started. He hasn't proven shit yet.

Lagares is a part time player.

Syndergaard and Matz have been rolling the entire season until their last start or two. They have bone spurs that may not even be that significant and won't hurt their arm. Just some discomfort. I'm sure they are the only two pitchers in the league that have to deal with some discomfort...holy shit. Wheeler also had discomfort but is right back on schedule. But yeah, let's pretend like all their arms are falling off.

Yeah, the entire team is underperforming...as intimated by their GM...but keep leaning on that injury excuse. I'm sure if Duda and DW were back, they'd be really fucking good.
Why can't it be a combination of both?

It can be and certainly is. I'm just tired of the focus being on injuries when this team is just flat out underperforming. From the starters to the bench to the call-ups (that were raking before they got here). This is such an uninspired team that lacks leadership and at some point the manager and coaching staff need to be held to the fire. This team is WAY better than they've shown, even with the injuries.

I can certainly agree with that then. Guys like Conforto and Harvey not performing, ect have definitely been a huge blow..

Im quietly optimistic. Do we have the time to be patient though? There's clearly an adjustment level. Very rarely do guys just jump out and are immediately good and even when they do (Conforto) they might still be due for a huge regression/slump when the league corrects itself. Its so frustrating. Our lineup is desperate for offense and we have 4-5 guys that are killing it in Vegas lol.

Conforto has been the most notable under performer.
arcarsenal : 6/30/2016 8:32 pm : link
Probably Harvey too. deGrom hasn't been as good as we thought but he hasn't been bad at all.

Who else is totally underperforming, though? I think Granderson pretty clearly overperformed last year.. I didn't expect him to repeat his 2015. He's basically doing what I thought he would. 25 HR pop.. low average, etc..

d'Arnaud hasn't really played enough to say he's underperforming but obviously he's got to be better.

Cespedes, Walker and Cabrera have all basically been what I thought they'd be. Ditto Lagares (before he got hurt)

It's definitely playing a role but so are the injuries. To say the injuries aren't making a difference right now is crazy. We won 13 of our last 15 games to close out April with a healthy team and closed the month on an 8 game winning streak. This team really hasn't looked the same since.

next to their career averages the other day. I agree Granderson probably isn't the 130s guy he was last year but I was hoping for closer to his career average of 118 so I would certainly say he's one guy that's underperformed. For a leadoff hitter he hasn't been walking nearly enough either. Still, he's always been streaky. A hot 2 weeks would bring him right back up to his career averages which certainly could still happen. He's at 107 right now.

Essentially, three players carried us through April offensively...Conforto, Walker, and Cespedes. Almost everyone else was pitiful. If Granderson was overperforming last year, then we are in trouble. The bench has been awful. Call ups have been bad. We literally can't even buy any help. Reyes comes to the Mets and goes 0 for 9 in the minors (I know, I know). But still.

I feel like every year we have the same conversation in regards to the team going through the motions and being stuck in an uninspired rut. Every damn year. Maybe there is something to that?

It's cool, man. Everyone's just frustrated right now. It's really tough to watch this and it doesn't feel like there's any end in sight. After that similarly miserable offensive stretch last year, I think we all felt like that was gone for good and that we'd have a really solid, productive lineup this year.

It's almost hard to believe we're right back to watching an equally futile lineup day in and day out.. but here we are.

Stufftherun : 6/30/2016 10:24 pm : link
would love, or hate, to see what the oppositions BA is against the pitching staff with an 0 - 2 count. How God awful have they been?!

ZGiants98 : 6/30/2016 10:34 pm : link
Both with the Houdini reference...
Ha!
arcarsenal : 6/30/2016 10:36 pm : link
Good stuff.

He really is, though. It's incredible that he's got this streak going. It's almost unfathomable to think he hasn't blown one yet this year considering all the jams he's put himself in.
Guy makes all these different Familia gifs. Got to share. lol
ZGiants98 : 6/30/2016 10:36 pm : link

deGrom up next tonight!

arcarsenal : 7/1/2016 9:48 am : link
Can we get deGrom some fucking run support? When was the last time we scored a run for this guy?
