Isles and Devils will probably be active. Should see some more trades too either today or next week once the dominoes settle.
Okposo, Nielsen rumored to be looking elsewhere. Isles supposedly looking at Andrew Ladd. Also some talk they might be willing to take Vanek back provided it's low risk and low term.
Devils need to bring in at least another forward and a defenseman. Some rumors they have checked in on Nielsen and also Matt Martin for a 4th line role too. Okposo and Eriksson probably too high for the Devils liking.
Do Rangers pull off a trade today? Still some Stepan rumblings out there with the Wild if they can't sign one of the forwards in free agency.
Will be interesting to see what Eric Staal does and where he goes.
so basically if Price goes down again, the Habs are looking for the #1 pick in 2017.
I don't get it Montoya is a solid backup and for only 950K that is a good deal as well.

sign Al Montoya, WTF? 950k.

But given the Canadiens history and reliance so heavily on a goalie I'd have been happier with a Reimer, Jake Allen, etc. type who can start long-term in the event of injury.
Al Montoya is a 15-20 game goalie max and you figure you'll lose half of those games.
Couldn't agree more.
Spin city going on here, folks
There is no one on the FA market to replace him. I would expect a trade before the summer is out.
From the TSN interview, Frans made it sound like the money was even but he wanted a new opportunity and he likes the Red Wings style. This is somewhat damning of the isle organization imo. Lifelong islander who supposedly loves it here leaves for less $$

Totally agree.
Tyutin to COL, 1yr 2M
Habs sign Sergachev to 3 yrs ELC, sign Daniel Carr to 2 yr deal.
NYI and DET out on Martin, TOR looking like the landing spot.
Well...bye.

He also said he wanted to be around new COACHES.
The Devils should add a new backup goalie for 1 year as Kinkaid really struggled last year unless Scott Wedgewood is ready. He did play great in the four games he played in last season but obviously it was a small sample size. Al Montoya would have been a great signing at only 950K if Wedgewood needed more seasoning in the AHL.
Cizikas moves up to replace Nielsen
Chimera replaced Martin
More work to do. A trade for a winger?

naaa no to Vanek. He's not coming here for peanuts and he's about 3 years removed from any kind of top scoring. The back-up goalie situation is fine, they don't play that much any way. Perfectly fine with Shero mainly sitting out the first day as the $ and years being thrown around is crazy. Lou getting involved with that crap is what got us in trouble. We are in a great situation with the cap, and Shero has made some superb trades the past few years. I like that he locked up his RFA's except for Palmieri so far and that will get done. Probably would have preferred keeping Schlemko instead of signing Lovejoy, but that's splitting hairs. I'm betting he' not done this off season. He'll probably have another nice move or 2. He's put us in position to seriously challenge for a playoff spot for the first time in a few years.
I agree. Chimera is a big upgrade over Martin, even at 37. And I love Martin. Chimera paired with Clutterbuck will have opposing fans despising the Isles...

We already do ;)

I'm sure Clutterbuck will be just as effective without her husband around..

Nope
Andrew Shaw replaces Lars Eller (wash IMO)
Weber replaces Subban (for this year probably a wash)
Radulov (d-bag, but a talent nonetheless - said all the right stuff in interviews and Bergevin allegedly talked to Weber about it first)
Montoya replaces Lindgren/Scrivens/Condon (I'm not a huge Montoya fan, but he's better than those three)
but that team's success or failure will be determined by Carey Price.
and they still need another to 4 D and top 6 forward though Radulov may be that forward.
Yes, the key to all this is Radilov. He is older now, married with kid, so the Habs are hoping he has matured since he left. We shall see. With Price coming back healthy, Habs should be fine.

Shaw may have more grit, not sure how that's measured, but every advanced stat out there says Eller was better defensively (and they were very similar offensively - though Shaw played with much better players) and Subban was better in every meausurable way than Weber except ironically the PP and goals scored (which are what I felt were PK's strength). Especially getting the puck out of the zone, which if you watched the SC playoffs at all, that's the recipe the Pens used to win, their D were excellent at transition. Subban great at it, Weber not so great at it.
However I agree the key is Radulov, he's a potential top 6 forward on a very low-risk contract. Good thing is it's just a 1-year deal, bad thing is it's just a 1-year deal.
I also like the fact the Canadiens re-signed Carr to a very low 2-year deal and an under the radar signing was D-man Zach Redmond from the Avs. He'll be in the mix for a top 6 spot. Habs are deep with mediocre quality at the blue line. After Weber and Markov (who is 100 years old) Emelin, Petry, Pateryn, Beaulieu, Redmond, Barbeiro, all can play at the NHL level to varying degrees.
Plus, from a draft standpoint they nailed the Sergachev pick, I love that kid, he's going to be a stud, and he's already signed to an EL contract, but no chance IMO he makes the team this year, maybe next year.
The Habs once again will live and die with Price.
Which is fine, if he's healthy.
BREAKING: #Panthers set to sign Jason Demers to a 5-year, $22.5 million contract
FLA still going nuts with signings...Trocheck getting 6 yrs, $4.75M AAV (source: E. Friedman). I wouldn't mind a guy like Huberdeau eventually shaking loose. His contract is up after this upcoming season.

shaw adds more needed grit to Habs than eller. Weber is a better dman than PK and is much more physical, just what the Habs defense lacked. If beauleau can elevate his game next year he should replace PK somewhat in the skills you lost with PK gone. This kid you drafted in round one according to everything I read says he is the real deal. I would not be surprised if he is playing in the NHL when he is 19 because he is so physically developed now.

I'm a Leafs fan so I know a bit about your Habs. Basically, our two teams sucked last year but your boys had an excuse- no Price to bail you out. I always thought your team wasn't really much better than my team, except for Price bailing you out game after game. It seemed to me last year, you had a top line and three fourth lines. For your sake, you better hope Shaw and Radilov make a big improvement.
I thought Carr had promise when I saw him. I don't know anything about this Redmond kid. I thought Scrivens was a decent back up goalie so I don't know about Montoya. There was rumor going out that Habs were going to land Lucic but I heard him say, he could not see him wearing a Habs up I after being a Bruin all those years.
I disagree about three 4th lines though. and Montreal's backup goalies were not NHL caliber even for backups so that contributed to their decline last year along with the Gallagher injury.
once they made Galchenyuk a center they had two good lines with zero depth is how I'd say it.
but Gallagher being in and out of the lineup made it so they never really played consistently with two good lines.
Paccioretty Galchenyuk Gallagher
Radulov Plekanec Carr (or upgrade)
are two good lines.
Shaw will probably be 3rd line C and Desharnais on 4th line where he belongs and the whole team gets better.
but it's no secret the Canadiens will still live and die with Price for now.

I am not criticizing the job Shero has done. I will admit I wasn't sure if he was the right choice to fix this team and rebuild the farm system but I am happy to admit I was wrong. He has done a fantastic job thus far and his trade for Palmieri was a steal and the Hall trade will be even better. I agree on Schlemko I would rather have him than Lovejob but it's not a significant loss.
Ducks acquire Jonathan Bernier from TOR for a conditional pick.
that's the kind of goalie the Canadiens should target given their reliance on Price. Not that Bernier is Price, far from it, but he can be a long-term starter. He's started 50+ games before with sub 3 GAA and decent save %.

Feelsy, the MacKinnon deal came in just after I posted the others...too lazy to have gone back to post it. And because of your earlier thread, I'm sitting at the pool listening to some DLR.

This is a good thing for the Isles, imo.
First, this puts him out of the running to be the next Isles GM.
Second, it never hurts to have a good relationship with another GM when looking ti make a deal. LV may end up with a player or two who could help the Isles.
Lastly, maybe he will spare the Isles of poaching one of its core players that is left unprotected (I know, that is highly unlikely. McPhee will pick the best players available).
