NFT: NHL Free Agency - Discussion/Rumors

Sammo85 : 7/1/2016 7:46 am
Isles and Devils will probably be active. Should see some more trades too either today or next week once the dominoes settle.

Okposo, Nielsen rumored to be looking elsewhere. Isles supposedly looking at Andrew Ladd. Also some talk they might be willing to take Vanek back provided it's low risk and low term.

Devils need to bring in at least another forward and a defenseman. Some rumors they have checked in on Nielsen and also Matt Martin for a 4th line role too. Okposo and Eriksson probably too high for the Devils liking.

Do Rangers pull off a trade today? Still some Stepan rumblings out there with the Wild if they can't sign one of the forwards in free agency.

Will be interesting to see what Eric Staal does and where he goes.

According to Uncle Larry, the Rangers got the 2nd round pick from the Sens in return for waiting until after Brassard's bonus was paid to complete the deal. That would have me rather angry were I an Ottawa fan.

Aaron Ward says Kreider's salary demand is only $4.75M per. That's a very encouraging number.

I believe the Rangers claim was for 3.5 so Kreider will probably wind up costing us about 4.25
which suits me just fine
Greg from LI : 7/20/2016 12:54 pm : link
That's a very good price for Kreider on a long term deal, and if he does morph into the 30+ goal guy we've dreamed about he's a total steal.
Yeah I can live with 4.25...
MetsAreBack : 7/20/2016 2:05 pm : link
but as long as we get some term with that number.

I know agents always start high, but 4.75 seems unrealistic unless this is a 5 year deal. I'm trying to think of some comps out there to Kreider - Brandon Saad was one player that came to mind, but he's produced 25-30 goals in each of the past 2 seasons plus the huge Blackhawks post season. Kreider has been stuck on 20 goals... granted Saad gave up a lot of term to earn that $6 mil a year.
Actually looking around at guys like
MetsAreBack : 7/20/2016 2:11 pm : link
Victor Rask, Skinner, Schwartz, Saad... Kreider probably should get $4.75 - 5 million/year over 5-6 years. Hopefully the Rangers stop with these bridge deals and just lock this guy up. Worst thing that can happen is he's still got a team friendly deal you can trade in 2-3 years like they just did with Brassard.
Aren't you 40 today?
BrettNYG10 : 7/20/2016 2:17 pm : link
Go check out nursing homes.

Seth also has a birthday today, IIRC. #oldfucks

The Kreider $4.75M figure was only one year, apparently. A longer term deal might be >$5M.
Kyle Palmieri just got 5/$23.5
Greg from LI : 7/20/2016 2:18 pm : link
$4.65M per. He did score 30 last year, but that more than doubled his previous career high and he doesn't have anything close to Kreider's physical gifts.
.
arcarsenal : 7/20/2016 2:36 pm : link
Yeah I think if we were going L/T on Kreider it'd be like 5 per. I would be okay with a 5/25 "gamble" on him.
Agree
MetsAreBack : 7/20/2016 2:53 pm : link
5 for 24 or 25 mil or even 4 for 20 for Kreider would be a nice deal for both sides. My one concern is how that impacts Miller and Hayes... but can't make everyone happy all of the time.

I'm both honored and frightened that you knew it was my birthday and how old I was. I don't even have facebook or twitter... that's how old I am.

just glad you didn't start a thread about it - you always square me off against Seth and his thread gets more posts. Even though he's the bigger dick (which is saying something because I'm a strong douche)
I would overpay
pjcas18 : 7/20/2016 3:06 pm : link
for Kreider, but my hesitance is that during AV's reign, Kreider might just be this player you've seen the past 4 years.

he'll be 26 during next year's playoffs, not exactly a kid anymore.

so disappointed I had him pegged for future star. all the tools, his play fluctuates IMO between playing a split second hesitant and slightly out of control and i blame the coach. too much thinking, he's like a nuke in Bull Durham, don't want him thinking, just playing.

should be more dominant. only see flashes. It's a shame.

Being a douche is OK. Being a horrible homer is what separates Seth from you.

side request was $3.2 million, and Kreider's was $4.75 million. This is just a one year valuation submitted by Kreider..Like the linked article says, long term I think/hope $4.75-$5.25 get it done (lower end of course).

I wonder if it's a situation like the Habs, who let their stats guy go when he went to the mat to argue against the Subban trade.

If Im an owner who is paying an advanced stats guy, realistic chance I want to hear his opinion on any decent sized move the GM proposes. Has to piss off GMs when the stats guys dont back up their moves.
The Habs
pjcas18 : 7/26/2016 11:58 am : link
technically didn't let their stats guy go, his contract was up.

They just didn't renew it. Which is maybe splitting hairs, but technically slightly different.

They're not giving up on analytics, simply hiring a different stats guy which IMO is fine, I know I'm probably a laggard, but a lot of advanced stats in hockey don't pass the eye test to me, and hockey for me is hard to break down and rate a person to an individual metric like baseball since there are far too many variables that impact each players results. It's more of a sum of the parts game like football.
.....
BrettNYG10 : 7/26/2016 1:22 pm : link
I think there's a lot more work to be done in terms of usage/systems/teammates/etc. A guy could have crap possession numbers because he's paired with the wrong guy and in the wrong system.

So I get what you're saying.

BrettNYG10 : 7/26/2016 1:24 pm : link
Deej, I think the guy was definitely listened to. Just ignored/disagreed with because of 'culture'/'off-ice' reasons.

I saw someone (I can't find it now) tweet that Subban was late for practice like 18 times the past two years.

There is a ton of misinformation floating around now. I heard one report that said because Subban donated $10M to the Montreal Children's Hospital, which is the largest donation in history from a Canadian athlete, the team viewed him as "bigger than the team" and no one could be bigger than the team so they traded him.

Ridiculous.

I never heard the late 18 times thing, and Dave Stubbs who was a habs beat writer for years never mentioned it, but he definitely did have a "brand" and he was intent on building that brand, but that's why he was so popular IMO.
....
BrettNYG10 : 7/26/2016 1:33 pm : link
Yeah, I think there's a ton of rationalizing - I left out that it could just be due to a different valuation on both players (in other words, hockey reasons). Weber isn't some generic top four dman they dumped him for.

I blame Therrien
pjcas18 : 7/26/2016 1:38 pm : link
Bergevin to this point has been remarkably restrained and steady in the most pressure packed situation to be a GM in the NHL.

This trade is a head scratcher and unless someone inside the organization spills the thought process behind it, people are going to rationalize it for lack of a better explanation.

I believe almost none of them. We know Therrien was at odds with Subban, he called him out after several losses, the Avs the most blatant. My belief and you know I'm not fan of him, is MTL struggles to get coaches who fit in culturally as well as x's and o's so they are hesitant to fire Therrien since in theory he meets both.

I hate the system and think the man is way overrated as a coach, and I believe he influenced the trade more than anyone is letting on.
